Drama of Touching The VoiDThe weather was unbearably cold. It was bitter and frosty. Both Simon Yates

and Joe Simpson were suffering from Hypothermia. They were on their tracks until

the incident happened. Joe slid, head-first, on his back. Joe was seriously injured

with a severe break to his lower right leg and knee and the pain came floodingdown his thigh. Simon knew that Joe had fallen because they were tied to eachother by a rope. There was no help available on top of a 19000 feet high, remote,

hazardous, ice-covered mountain. Simon eventually would have to leave Joe

behind. Simon felt helpless and frustrated with himself. He was facing a moral

dilemma. He knew his chances of saving Joe were slim. It was clear to both Joe and

Simon that Joe would most likely fall into his own death.

Joe: God, my leg cantbe broken. Maybe Ive just torn a ligament. (Kicked the leg)

Joe (screamed): Arrrrrrghhhhhhh! My leg!.....My leg!

Joe (feeling the nausea): If Ive broken my leg then Im so dead because everyone said it. If there are just

two of you, a broken ankle could turn into a death sentence. And worst of all, because of me, we will be

stuffed! Oh god, please help me!

Simon: How are you doing down there?

Joe: Im good. What am I saying! Ive broken my leg!

Simon: Youre gone for.

Joe: I dont want to admit it but I know it too.

Simon: But dont worry. I wont leave you here.

Joe: Mate, Ive been thinking about it from the moment my leg broke. And Ive finally got an answer. I

know I cant survive.

Simon: Dont talk like that, dude. Hang in there.

Joe (whispered to himself and panicking): Left here? Alone?

Simon (whispered to himself): I can get off the mountain alone. I cant save him. It will be like digging my

own grave. I want to save Joe but that thought just seems pointless. This is a desperate situation. It will be

better if he had fallen.

Joe: I dont want to be a hindrance to you, Simon. Theres no way both of us can get off the mountain.

Simon (sobbing): But there must be a way. I cant leave you here.

Joe (shouted): Both of us know that you would eventually have to leave me behind!

Simon (sobbing): But..

Joe (with a calm face): Ive decided. Cut the rope.

Simon (sobbing): Do you expect me to do that? How could you say a thing like this?

Joe (with a calm face): You must do it.

Simon (begged): Just wait for a while. Let me think for a solution, please.

Joe (shouted): Just cut the rope already!

Simon (tears came pouring out from his eyes): Sorry, Joe! Im terribly sorry (Simon cut the rope)
