Brian O’Connell Principal Whangaparaoa College

Attendance

We expect all learners to attend the college every day. If your child is unable to attend please contact the college by phone or email as soon as possible. The email address to use is [email protected]. If your child is absent from school and no message has been received then a message will be sent to your cell phone as soon as possible.

You will probably be aware that we begin this academic year with the teachers’ collective agreement negotiations still unsettled and, as a consequence of that there is some industrial action in place.

At present there is a ban on meetings before 8.30am and after 5pm. This will involve disruption to planned parent meetings at the beginning of the year.

The NCEA evening on February 15 WILL take place. I would encourage all Year 11 learners and their parents to attend this important meeting. This is at 7pm in the auditorium. Parents and learners of other Year levels are welcome as well.

The Sports Information evening will take place on February 22 .

The Year 7 and 8 parents meeting unfortunately will need to be cancelled. I hope that there will be a speedy resolution by the government to these negotiations.

This year we are introducing a new initiative of working with families to improve the achievement of learners. At Years 7, 8 and 11 teachers will be discussing with you as a parent the learning that your child is undergoing at school. This is to allow parents to discuss with their child the learning that has occurred. Most of this contact will be by email and will, I believe, allow you to work with the school to improve the achievement of your child. Please make sure that you discuss with your child the information that has been given to you.

Over the year I look forward to working with all of you to ensure that 2011 is successful for all of the learners at Whangaparaoa College.

ROBOTIC CHALLENGE ROBO TEAM: Part of the Whangaparaoa College team. From left, Joshua Marsden, Coen Rutledge, Danyel Vickery (back), Callum Lincoln and Nathaniel Dufresne with their robot.

Robotics are catching on in colleges around the country with Whangaparaoa College the first in the northern area taking part in upper North Island VEX Robotics Round Up competitions. The contests were held in Albany at Massey Universities School of Engineering and Advanced Technology at the beginning of December. There were 37 teams competing including one from Los Angeles in California. Each team has to design, build and programme its own robot from scratch with all teams limited to standard VEX parts. "Whangaparaoa College started half way through this year. To date we have played in two competitions and placed in to the quarter finals both times," says VEX robotics coach Colin Watts. Whangaparaoa was only able to pick up one of the competition quoits at a time, and lost out to teams which had robots designed to collect up to four at a time. "Even so our robot was very reliable and well driven, with the lads thoroughly enjoying competing," he says. The first place alliance went to Free Range Robotics B, Lynfield A and Lynfield C, all of whom qualified for the VEX World Championships. second was Free Range C, Onehunga A and Onehunga B. The Excellence Award went to Onehunga A who also qualified for the VEX World Championships. - Rodney Times

From the PE Dept PE has kicked off and being in the middle of summer we are encouraging your children to come prepared with a sunhat and sunscreen. Lessons taught outside have the learners exposed to the sun for up to an hour at a time so it is definitely in their best interest to cover up. As PE is mandatory for learners from Year 7 to 11 it is compulsory to have the correct school PE uniform. If for some reason your child cannot bring the correct gear on the day then a note is required to give reasons for this. It is a hygienic practice that we expect correct PE uniform to be worn. It is also a fantastic idea to clearly name your child’s PE uniform. PE uniform is also compulsory for Year 12 & 13 learners. After athletics our Year 9 & 10 learners will be participating in a beach education unit where they will be taught basic surf skills which will require the learners to be in the water. Appropriate swim wear will be required during these lessons. Your child will be informed by their PE teacher when these lessons will happen. Any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact your child’s PE teacher.

STAFF MARAE TRIP

On Tuesday 1 February this year the staff from Whangaparaoa College attended a day at Te Herenga Waka o Orewa in Silverdale. The purpose of the day was for staff to gain some understanding of Maori tikanga, of the history of Maori on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula and to gain some understanding of strategies for raising the achievement of Maori learners. The day was a great success. Staff commented on their enjoyment of the day and on how much they learned and gained from the experience.

The day consisted of a powhiri, team building, comparisons of Maori and non-Maori human development theories, Waiata, Karakia, discussion on retention and achievement of Maori learners. Mara Schreurs, our Head of Maori, wrote a Waiata for our staff - who got to be learners for a day experiencing different methods of learning. Many teachers learnt what it felt like for some of their learners in their classrooms – learning something new and trying to make connections to prior experiences.

Thanks to Kereama Nathan, Trish Nathan, Marara Shreurs, Claude Wehi, Neria Mataira and the many others that contributed to our learning – a fantastic day that was very professionally presented. Kia ora.

This day was another step in our pathway to recognising one of the goals in our annual plan – to raise the achievement of our Maori learners. Our Whanau Support Group will discuss this goal and other strategies further. This group meets each term and the next meeting will be advertised via the newsletter. All parents, learners and their whanau are welcome to attend.

Sport at Whangaparaoa College will continue to grow and develop. This can be achieved through: • hard work • positive attitude • responsibility, and • natural talent Being a member of a school sports team brings responsibility.

Your son/daughter is required to: • attend meetings promptly • attend practices on time, wear the correct playing uniform with pride • have a responsible and positive attitude • remain committed to the team they have gained a place in for the

entire year

Behaviour of Parents on the sideline. • Be supportive of your son/daughter and the team they are involved in • All comments from the sideline should be unbiased and positive. • DO NOT abuse any officials, opposition players or spectators, please remember they perform this role on a voluntary basis • Any inappropriate behaviour reflects badly on your son/daughter’s team and is likely to tarnish the schools reputation

We value your support and look forward to seeing you on the sideline. If any Parents are willing to assist with managing or helping to coach a team please contact me.

Sports Programme Whangaparaoa College has a strong sports programme for all of our learners. At the beginning of 2008 the Board of Trustees made a significant decision around what sports would be concentrated on. This decision was made in relation to 3 areas • Amount of learners interested in the activity • Staffing resources • Quality of the competition. From this information it was decided to concentrate on the following sports: Athletics Cross-country Basketball Cycling Tennis Golf Lacrosse Touch Rugby Soccer Hockey Volleyball Cricket Netball Triathlon/multi sports The school is represented in each of these sports with learners participating from Years 7-13. On Tuesday 22 February at 7pm in the auditorium, there will be an information evening regarding sports. Parents and other community members are welcome to listen to information and ask questions more specific to themselves and their family. If there are any questions, please contact Sharon O’Brien (Sports Administrator) [email protected] or alternatively phone the school and extension 3220.

NETBALL UNIFORM CHANGE 2011

Whangaparaoa College’s Netball Committee will be changing the netball uniform in 2011 to bring our uniform in line with other colleges.

From 2011 Year 7 & 8 will be playing in the regulation netball uniform, being the skirt and top (not PE shirt and skirt). Year 9 & 10 will also be wearing the skirt and top. Year 11, 12, & 13 players will move into wearing the netball dress. We will slowly phase this in, with our Year 11`s purchasing these in 2011. Year 10`s can purchase the netball dress in 2012, which will see all our Senior Teams from Year 10 – 13 wearing the netball dress and all Year 7 – 9’s wearing the netball skirt and top.

This will be our compulsory netball uniform which we will be slowly phasing in so all teams should be wearing the same uniform.

If you have any second hand netball skirts and tops to donate or to sell on behalf please contact [email protected] Phone 4249177 ext 3208.
