PAVLACKA COMPETES AT PARALYMPICSOneonta State Sophomore Represents the United States in Sydney

Oneonta State sophomore swimmer Katie Pavlacka of Liverpool, N.Y. spent this past summer training for her firstParalympic experience that took place this past Oct. 19-28 in Sydney, Australia. She is blind and is a member of the varsityswimming & diving team at Oneonta.

Pavlacka qualified for the Games in six events: 100-meter breaststroke, 100-meter backstroke, 200-meter individualmedley and the 50, 100 and 400-meter freestyle. She entered the Games as the American record holder in eight events andthe world record holder in both the 800 and 1,500-meter freestyle, both of which were not competed in the Paralympics.Although she did not medal in any events that she competed, she did come home with one American record, a seventh placefinish in the 50-meter freestyle and a lifetime of memories from the games of Sydney.

Pavlacka’s highlight of her experience was breaking her own American record in the 400-meter freestyle which placedher fifth in the world in the finals. The only other event that she made the finals in was the 50-meter freestyle in which sheplaced seventh.

Pavlacka was one of 260 athletes that represented the United States in Sydney and one of 29 swimmers. She willcontinue to be a varsity member of the Red Dragons swim team while continuing her training in preparation for the 2004Paralympics in Athens, Greece.

The Paralympics are a multi-sport, multi-disability competition of elite, world-class, disabled athletes, similar in scopeto the Olympic Games. The Paralympic Games are held approximately two weeks after the Olympic Games in the same hostcity/country. The difference between the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games is that the Paralympics provide an elitecompetition opportunity to athletes with a functional disability which precludes their involvement in open competition of theOlympic Games. Paralympic athletes go through rigorous training year-round to prepare for their respective events. They arethe best of the best, who through determination and hard work, earn the honor of representing the United States on thecompetitive playing field.

Trio of Fall Coaches Earn Conference Honors

Oneonta State fall coaches had quite a year in the SUNYAC Conference. The Red Dragons added three more Coach ofthe Year plaques to the trophy cases when Tracey Ranieri, Ed O’Malley and Colleen Cashman all received similar honors forleading their squads to outstanding seasons. Ranieri is in her tenth season at Oneonta and earlier this year recorded her 100th victory at the College. She is currently124-85-17 in her 12 years as a head coach. This season she led her squad to 20 wins and a second straight SUNYACConference Championship and NCAA Tournament berth. Cashman, a Binghamton native, is in her second season as the Red Dragons’ volleyball coach and has, in a short time, turned the program back in a positive direction. This season they were 24-20, which is the second straight 20-win seasonunder Cashman’s tutelage. This year the team qualified for the SUNYAC Tournament after completing an 8-2 year in theconference, this after not making the SUNYAC’s last season. Cashman came to Oneonta State after a decade of associationwith the Binghamton University volleyball program as a player, an assistant coach and head coach. Ed O’Malley, a native of Oneonta and a graduate of the College, completed his second year at the helm of the women’stennis program. He has turned the program around in a short time and led the squad to a school best 12 wins in dual matchesthis fall. He graduates only one senior and is already looking forward to next season when he welcomes another talentedgroup of newcomers to the team. “These honors, although individual in nature, reflect on the entire athletic department as a whole,” said Athletic DirectorSteve Garner. “Our administration has committed itself to a successful athletic program and part of that is attractingoutstanding coaches to lead our teams. The college is extremely proud of the accomplishments of all our athletes andcoaches.”
