was Captain for three of those years. She was a three-time All-SUNYAC performer and was conference champion at 2nd doubles in 2008. Academically, Shannon was a SUNYAC Chancellor’s Award winner in 2010 and was selected by the athletics department as the Lee Abbott Female Scholar Athlete of the Year last spring. She also appeared on the SUNYAC Commissioner’s List and All-Academic Team during her four years.

Fred Puritz First-Year Athlete of the Year Award Two-sport athletes, Jermaine Miller (Elmira/Southside) and Kori Hamm (Burlington Flats/Edmeston), along with soccer player Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenedehowa) were selected as the first-year athletes of the year in the department. Miller made his presence felt as a rookie as a diver and track & field athlete this year. As a diver, Miller broke the Oneonta school records in the 1-meter event for six and 11 dives. He also set the school record for six dives in the 3-meter event while capturing the pool record for six dives on the 1-meter board. At the SUNYAC championships he placed 6th in the 1-meter event and 9th in the 3-meter event. Miller also hit the NCAA provisional standard in both events, four times in the 1-meter event and once in the 3-meter event, and was considered for selection to the Div. III national championship meet. He was runner up in the 1-meter and 3rd in the 3-meter at the ECAC Winter Championship meet. As a member of the outdoor track & field team, Miller was a SUNYAC medalist in the 110-meter high hurdles after placing third at this past weekend’s conference championship meet. He set school records in the hurdles and pole vault. Hamm has made her impact on both the soccer and track & field teams. In soccer, she started 12 of the 24 games that Oneonta played last fall. She contributed one goal and four assists for the Red Dragons, who won the SUNYAC title and advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament. During the indoor track & field season, Hamm was conference runner-up in the triple jump, earning All-Conference honors. She was an ECAC qualifier and hit the NCAA provisional standard in the triple jump. To date, Hamm is a provisional qualifier in the triple jump for outdoors, and she placed sixth in the event at the SUNYAC championship meet held this past weekend. DeSimone was a starting player for the women’s soccer team last fall and earned SUNYAC Rookie of the Year honors. She scored six goals and added one assist for 13 points as a first-year standout. DeSimone was a first team All-SUNYAC selection, a second team NSCAA All-Region selection and was an ECAC Div. III Upstate New York All-Star. She was also named to both the Oneonta Mayor’s Cup and SUNYAC All-Tournament Teams.

Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the Year This year’s male and female Scholar Athlete of the Year awards went to sophomore Mike Salerno (West Babylon/West Babylon) of the lacrosse team and Celia Alterio (Amherst/Amherst) of the women’s cross country and track & field teams. Salerno was second on the team in scoring this spring with 26 goals and two assists for 28 points. He was second in the SUNYAC with 18 goals and registered two

recipient while also winning the Physic’s Department Wang Scholarship as the department’s top freshman last year. Alterio competed for four years on both the cross country and track & field teams and excelled both athletically and academically. Athletically she was the first or second finisher in every race during her cross country career. She was a multi-time qualifier for the SUNYAC and ECAC track & field championships in the middle to long distance events. She holds the school record in the 3,000 meter run for outdoor track. Academically, Alterio has been named to the SUNYAC All-Academic Team and Commissioner’s list throughout her four years. She was inducted into the National Student Athlete Honor Society of Chi Alpha Sigma in 2010 and was selected as a USTFCCCA Scholar Athlete in 2007.

G. Hal Chase Memorial Award This year’s recipients of the G. Hal Chase Memorial Awards are senior William Sacco (Canandaigua/Naples) of the tennis team and junior Heidi Kissinger (East Islip/East Islip) of the lacrosse team. The award is in honor of G. Hal Chase, who served as the Athletics Director at the college and Chair of the Physical Education Department for over 40 years. The award recognizes a student athlete’s loyalty, leadership, dedication and contributions to the overall success of the athletics program. Sacco, a three-year team captain, was a four-year starting player for the men’s tennis program. During his career he was a two-time All-Conference performer and conference champion. He was selected as the team’s Most Valuable player twice. In the classroom, Sacco was named to multiple honor societies including the National Student Athlete Honor Society of Chi Alpha Sigma, Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta. As the President of the Student Athlete Advisory Council, Sacco was involved in the planning and implementation of numerous fundraising and community service projects. Kissinger has been a three-year starter for the women’s lacrosse program as a midfielder and has established herself as a team leader. Kissinger was recently voted to be the 2011-12 President of the Student Athlete Advisory Council. She has been involved in SAAC since her freshman year and has been involved in multiple service projects that have helped increase the visibility of the athletics department.

Single Most Outstanding Performance Award Track & field athlete, Sarah Timmons (Schodack/Maple Hill) and lacrosse player Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) are the recipients of the female and male Outstanding Single Performance Awards respectively. Timmons earned the selection based on her performance in winning the 20-lbs. weight throw at the 2011 SUNYAC indoor track & field championships. Already leading the event entering her final throw, she destroyed her personal best and the rest of the field throwing 16.21 meters (53’2”) to take the championship over Brockport’s Stephanie Powell while hitting the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Prior to the championship, Timmons had never defeated Powell in head-to-head competition. Van de Veerdonk was selected after his performance in leading Oneonta to a victory versus Hartwick College. Trailing 10-9 with 4:09 remaining in the game, van de Veerdonk scored three straight goals to lead the Red Dragons to a 12-10 win against its city rival. Van de Veerdonk finished the game with five goals and one assist while also winning 19-of-24 face-offs. Rounding out the awards for the year, the department recognizes the male and female team with the highest GPA as recipients of the Jay Pawa Team Academic Award. For a second consecutive year, the winners were the men’s and women’s cross country teams.

Sean Daly selected as an Academic All-AmericanHonor caps a brilliant career as a student athlete at SUNY Oneonta

2011 SUNY Oneonta graduate, Sean Daly (Weedsport/Weedsport), was selected as a Capital One Academic All-American® in the sports of Cross Country and Track & Field by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Daly, who was a second team pick last spring, earned first team honors this spring.

Daly is the first Oneonta State male athlete to earn national honors twice and the second male to earn first team honors. Last spring, 2010 graduate Josh Wake, became the first male to earn first team national honors as part of the At-Large program. The only other athlete to earn national honors twice was 2003 graduate, Lizbeth Oppenheimer, who was a two-time honoree in the sport of softball. Ten Oneonta State student athletes have earned national honors a total of 12 times since 1999. Daly, who was a Capital One Academic All-District 1 First Team selection this spring, is a year-round athlete for the Red Dragons and is a top performer in both cross-country and track & field.

Athletically, Daly reached the pinnacle of track & field in 2009 when he was a part of Oneonta’s 1,600-meter relay that captured the NCAA Div. III national championship. In addition, he has been an All-Conference performer, ECAC and SUNYAC champion in track & field. At this spring’s annual awards ceremony in athletics, Daly was the recipient of the Dr. Joseph Heissan Senior Achievement Award, which is based on a four-year cumulative athletic and academic career as a student athlete at Oneonta. Academically, Daly was recognized as a “Best & Brightest” student by the college in 2009 and 2010. He was named to the USTFCCCA Scholar Academic Team twice, was inducted into the National Student Athlete Honor Society of Chi Alpha Sigma while earning SUNYAC All-Academic and Commissioner’s List honors all four years.

Daly contributed to the athletics department and the college by serving on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, the Pre-Law Society and was one of two student athletes to serve on the Intercollegiate Athletics Board. He also was a student trustee on the College Foundation Board.

Daly, who majored in music industry with a minor in English, will be attending Villanova Law School in the fall to pursue a law degree. To be eligible for nomination at the district level, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

A student athlete is eligible for the national ballot only if he/she is named to the first team in one of the eight CoSIDA districts. Only members of the Academic All-America Committee, the CoSIDA Board of Directors and past presidents are eligible to vote on the national ballot, which amounts to just over 100 voters. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

Capital One, an NCAA Corporate Champion, began its affiliation with college sports with the sponsorship of the 2001 Capital One Florida Citrus Bowl (now the Capital One Bowl) and ESPN’s Capital One Bowl Week. In 2010, Capital One launched the Capital One Cup, a prestigious new program rewarding NCAA Division I athletics programs for their cumulative on-field performance across multiple men and women’s sports. In addition, Capital One sponsors the ABC College Football Halftime Report, Capital One All-America Mascot Team, all 88 NCAA Championships including the Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships, and numerous other collegiate athletics programs.

The fourth annual Dining for Champions fundraising event that supports team travel and facility enhancements will be held on Saturday, Sep. 17, 2011.

In its first three years, the event has raised over $42,000 dollars.

We invite you to be a part of this year’s event. Please go to the athletics website for more information on how to reserve your seat at one of our tables.
