Draft-Dodging the Vietnam War

Why were young men so against the war in Vietnam and how did

they dodge the draft?

Anti-War Movement-anti war movement was from 1965-1971

-started on college campuses for the most part

-caught attention of America when anti-war movements were happening in some of finest universities in U.S.

-with the controversy of fighting a war their was also huge controversy with young men being recruited to Vietnam.

Motives-main reason for draft-dodging was a lack of interest in war

-young Americans that war was pointless and their was no reason to be in war with Vietnam

-young men did not mind being called into the services, but did not want to be sent to fronts lines of Vietnam to die for reasons they were unsure of

Methods-Draft-Dodging methods include purchasing of forged documents; ex. Air Force and National Guard papers

-Some presented themselves as homo-sexual or drug addicts

-Others would put a drop of ink in their cigarette, producing temporary patches on their lungs which they called tuberculosis

-Many simply burned their draft card

-about 16,000 men aged 19-25 migrated to Canada between the years of 1966-1972

-Some volunteered for military service before being drafted

Conclusion

-Their was estimated 210,000 draft-dodgers

- 100,000 more received less-than-honorable military discharges from Vietnam
