  • Life Journey

Winston George Silvera was born on October 27, 1937 to Valda May Gordon and Osmond Silvera in Kingston, Jamaica and went to his rest on April 11, 2020 in New York City. His life exemplified selflessness, caring, devotion, and integrity. As a youngster, Winston attended elementary school in Kingston, but enjoyed spending carefree summer vacations in the country with his grandmother and his cousins. His long and distinguished educational journey began at Kingsway High School in Kingston and then on to West Indies College in Mandeville. He was a proud, supportive alumnus of both institutions. In 1960 he came to the U.S. and continued on his educational path, pursuing the Pre-Med program as an undergraduate at Atlantic Union College (AUC), majoring in Biology and Chemistry, later switching to the teaching profession, remaining a dedicated scientist. He received a bachelor’s degree from Atlantic Union College in Massachusetts, a master’s degree from Albert Einstein College, and a Ph.D. from New York University. A Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship enabled him to pursue graduate studies and participate in the research field. Dr. Silvera was a lifelong educator, beginning with his service at Pine Forge Academy, teaching Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and then at Northeastern Academy as a teacher of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Health. At Harry S. Truman High School, he taught science courses and served as interim chairperson of the Science Department. He was a professor of Biology at

Hostos Community College CUNY. He was one of the team members who received a grant in Operation Chemistry from the American Chemical Society and the National Science Teachers Association. This award enabled him to give many workshops and demonstrations to teachers in several states. Winston was a member of several science organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association (NASTA), the NYC Chemistry Teachers Club, and the Physics Club.

While teaching at Harry S. Truman High School, Winston worked after hours as a U-rating advocate in the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) Bronx office and later in the Manhattan Borough office. He retired from teaching in 2003, but continued his work as a tenacious advocate for union members. He traveled extensively on behalf of the union. He retired from the UFT on December 21, 2019.

Winston has a strong family connection to the military. His uncle (Uncle Sam) served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II; his father, Osmond, also served in the RAF; his great uncle (Uncle Prince) served during World War I and in the Cuban Regiment; his daughter, Judith, served in the U.S. Navy, and his grandson David now serves in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Winston himself served in the Air Force Reserve at Fort Devens, Massachusetts for two years. He was drafted in 1965 during the Viet Nam War, but with the guidance and counsel of some of the church leaders, he was able to register as a Conscientious Objector and so never saw combat on the battlefield. He was assigned to the Engineering Unit as a mission specialist. Winston participated in a wide range of endeavors and seemed to be always busy, but he was a people-person and made time for others. Family meant a lot to him. He mentored students and teachers. He gave of his time and his means whenever he saw a need. He enjoyed watching basketball and was an ardent New York Nets fan. He loved his work and his local church as well as the world-wide Seventy-day Adventist denomination to which he belonged. He is survived by his wife, Yolanda; his daughter, Judith Rameau and her husband, Rick; grandsons David and Marcus; his siblings Wayne, Osmond, Yvonne, Jasnet and Audrey; many nieces and nephews; cousins and a large circle of friends.

  • Revelation 14:12-13 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God,

    and the faith of Jesus.

And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith

the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

    Revelation 22:12-14

And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man

according as his work shall be.

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Blessed are they that do his

commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life and may enter in through

    the gates into the city.
