Good Morning Dr Tan, I’m Annabel from Garuda House (staying in the suite beside yours). Over the holidays my friends (fellow Garudians) and I have started a project to raise awareness on poverty and would love to seek some advice and guidance from you especially since you’ve had much experience in this area. Our project, Living on Less, seeks to raise awareness on the issue of poverty among students in Singapore. We strongly believe that it is now more important than ever to prepare a generation of leaders who understand how to best eradicate poverty. Hence we started this project with the hopes that our participants will attain a greater understanding of poverty which is something that most are fortunate enough to have avoided experiencing this today. We hope to be able to carry out the Living on Less campaign in CAPT. We hope that the campaign will be able to act as a lens for CAPTains to understand how organisations like the United Nations and the Gates Foundation are tackling poverty. It will be done mainly in 2 ways: Much like the Living Below the Line campaign, we seek to have our participants experience living on a budget of just $3 per day. At the same time, we will also conduct fundraising through the Vancouver-based Charity Science’s Experience Poverty Platform, directly to the Deworm the World initiative. Charity Science has already agreed to provide a localized version for Singapore, and its payment gateways have been tested with local bank accounts. It is also hoped that when the students are fundraising during the campaign, they will learn about the charity that they are raising funds for, through a briefing in CAPT (which we would love to be able to do) as well as our Facebook page. During the end of the campaign, CAPTains will also get a chance to reflect and share their thoughts on their experience. We would really love to get your advice and guidance on this. I’ve also attached more information here in the PDF. If it’s possible could we perhaps meetup to discuss further?
