MENTORSHIP Mentoring is an ideal practice to help others and to broaden your own understanding of the difficulties and

decisions that are faced while allowing for your own empathic learning and development. I have had the privilege of working with students and colleagues at various stages in their career during difficult times when their future direction was unclear or not what they had envisioned. By providing a comfortable atmosphere of trust and understanding, I endeavor to offer support by listening, providing a “sounding board”, and offering my opinion and experiences when appropriate, sometimes limited in particular cases, to help the individual come to their own realization of their current situation and options. Throughout my higher education I have had mentors, although I didn’t realize it at the time, that guided me through my own difficult times, and I only hope that I might have the insight and patience to help others as well.

SECTION III – RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND INTERESTS RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

From 2011 to present, I have been a Senior Research Scientist at the University of Central Florida in the College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL) and have been employed in Dr. Michael Bass’s group working on laser characterization and the linear and nonlinear characterization of various materials. From 2004 to 2011 I worked in the NLO group directed by Drs. Eric Van Stryland and David Hagan helping to manage their group and performing linear and nonlinear optical spectroscopy. From 2003 to 2004, I managed and maintained the optics facility in the Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials at Wake Forest University under the direction of Dr. David L. Carroll where I performed my postdoctoral education. From September 2000 until 2003, I was responsible for managing and maintaining the optics division of the Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technologies (COMSET) under the direction of Dr. John Ballato at Clemson University.

4

Page 6: Dr. Scott Webster - Complete CV - 12-4-14e

These positions have afforded me the opportunity to conduct a diverse array of projects from conception through design, implementation and completion into a product or publishable output. My research focus has been on the linear and nonlinear optical characterization and modeling of various optical materials (π-conjugated and non-conjugated organics, wide/narrow gap semiconductors, glasses, plasmonic nanostructures, etc.) and the development and analysis of new experimental techniques (white light continuum generation for Z-scan and pump-probe and the double-pump probe technique for long-lived absorptions, etc.). My work within these research groups involved projects ranging from nanomaterials growth, scanning probe microscopy (AFM, SNOM, STM) and electron microscopy (SEM, TEM, EELS), to polymeric electro-optical device fabrication and testing (organic-LEDs (OLEDs) and organic-photovoltaics (OPVs), laser characterization, and various materials characterizations). This diverse variety of projects required frequent collaborations and provided a strong working knowledge of many experimental techniques and scientific disciplines.

RESEARCH INTERESTS I am particularly interested in understanding how structural modifications affect the linear and nonlinear

optical properties of various glasses, organics and nanostructured materials. Applications of these natural/engineered systems with enhancement from nanomaterials and materials advancements will facilitate the next generation of passive nonlinear transmissive, reflective and absorptive devices. Noble metal nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes and other exotic nanomaterials, such as polymeric and boron nitride nanotubes, are of interest for engineered energy transfer and plasmon coupled systems. Other interests include photonic band gap structures for nonlinear optical applications and the development of negative index of refraction metamaterials from ordered (hard) to disordered (soft) nanostructure composites. My objective is to work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists to solve challenging problems, create new technologies and to progress physical understanding for current and future applications and devices.
