What is a disk drive?

• Windows assigns a drive to every physical device connected to the computer

• Disk drivethe logical space where files and directories are stored, indicated by a letter followed by a colon (for example, C: for the hard drive and D: for the CDROM drive).

Facts about Windows XP folders

• A folder’s name consists of a maximum of 255 characters.

• The root folder, designated by c:\ exists on every formatted disk.

• A path describes how to find a file starting at the root directory (for example, to refer to a file in the “docs” directory shown on the previous slide use

c:\cs110\windows\docs Note the first \ designates the root, while the other \ are used to separate directory names.

What is a file?• File

information assigned a name and stored on disk.

• File types:Text file (ASCII) only consists of characters on the keyboard, for example, letters, digits, and punctuation marks).

• a file’s name is usually composed of two parts separated by a period. The part following the period is called the file’s extension and indicates the type of file. For example, an xls extension indicates an Excel worksheet.
