Stages of Math Development

Pre-school - KindergartenDuring this stage, children should begin to: o count aloudo compute the number of objects in a groupo understand that a particular number of objects has a fixed value

despite the size or nature of those objectso understand relative size and be able to sort objects by size and shapeo follow a sequence of two- and three-step commandso be able to perform simple addition and subtraction computations

1st – 3rd Grades During this stage, children should: begin to perform simple addition and subtraction

computations efficiently master basic math facts (such as, 3 + 2 = 5) recognize and respond accurately to mathematical signs begin to grasp the concept of multiplication (grade three) understand the notion of measurement and be able to apply

this understanding improve their concepts of time and money

4th - 7th GradesDuring this stage, children should: recall basic mathematical facts, including multiplication

tables, with ease become competent with fractions, decimals, and

percentages begin to understand the relationships among fractions,

decimals, and percentages develop facility with word problems be adept at estimating quantities and rounding off numbers develop basic computer skills

8th – 12th Grades During this stage, children should be able to: employ an increasingly high level of abstract, symbolic thinking perceive relationships and make translations among decimals, fractions,

and percentages deal easily with a wide array of equations, formulae, and proofs explain and illustrate mathematical concepts, rather than simply apply

them plan and self-monitor during multi-step problem solving use calculators and computers with facility

Fundamentals of

EAGALA Model PracticeStructuring Horse Experiences

“…The ideas and ways of structuring sessions on the ground with horses are infinite. Within these possibilities, there are common categories which may assist in the design process:”

The BIG question: Do you have a Curriculum / Lesson Plans?

What do you DO?

The Answer:

It depends! Remember the earlier slide – FANAFI? That’s how you decide.

Find the need and decide how you can best fill it.It is a PROCESS

Parent – Teacher - Student

You can get information from parents, teachers, student, & horses

Research Based teaching Strategies =

EAGALA Model Horse Powered Learning

(Schools are MUCH more interested in Research or Evidence Based Reading and Teaching Strategies than in the modality in which

those strategies are delivered (i.e. EAGALA model EAL!)

• Word families on a ball (take, cake, fake, etc)• Or vocabulary words• Or tricky words (come some home)(though, through, thought)• Multiple meaning words (blaze, snip, paint)

• Horse must kick halfway• Child kicks through a goal• Read all words – 1 point per word correct• Create a sentence using the word(s)

Horse soccer

• Math vocabulary words on a ball• Horse must kick halfway• Child kicks through a goal• Pick 2 or 3 words• Create a math sentence• Two plus three take away one equals four.

Adapt & change the game to fit the need.

Provide Opportunities for Clients to Make Choices

Deliberately choose how you set up the experience for clients and look at how many opportunities you provide them to make choices vs. the choices being made by the facilitators. Any time a directive is given to clients, it removes an opportunity of choice from the clients, and an opportunity to learn more about the clients as a result.
