THE RIVER IN YOU

In his book MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST, Oswald Chambers expresses a truth from John 7:38: “He who believes in me...out of his heart will flow living waters.” Chambers observes: “A river reaches places its source never knows. Jesus has said that, if we have received His fullness, ‘rivers of living water’ will flow out of us, reaching in blessing ‘even to the ends of the earth’ (Acts 1:8) regardless of how small the visible effects of our lives may appear to be. We have nothing to do with the outflow--’This is the work of God, that you believe...’ (John 6:29). God rarely allows a person to see how great a blessing he is to others.” The Church of Jesus Christ, as His body to the world, is designed to flow with “rivers of living water” to countless numbers of people. That living water restores His created beings. It is life, healing, provision, and salvation, literally “even to the ends of the earth.”

Unfortunately, we rarely get to personally witness all the blessings that His living water brings to countless thousands when we cheerfully give of our resources through the various agencies set up within the organized Church of Jesus Christ. It is easy to see our “contributions” as “taxes” given to prop up an institution. But just this past June at General Assembly, we saw actual faces and clasped the hands of living beings from dozens upon dozens of other countries, who are recipients of “living water flowing out of us” through the grace and provision of Jesus Christ, because we gave our World Evangelism Fund offerings. Every Sunday morning that you hug a retired pastor or pastor’s spouse, you have physically touched one for whom you have provided through that living water springing up within you by your giving to Pensions and Benefits. Every week you will be blessed by worship leaders, Bible study teachers, and leaders in your church who received theirknowledge and skills from one of our Nazarene universities you supported through your giving to Nazarene higher education. Many of our pastors and staff members receive their biblical, theological, and practical education through the TennesseeDistrict Course of Study. A large number of our churches are in existence today because of the resources that flow through the Tennessee District. Resources have been given in order that the Tennessee District may guarantee loans so that churches can have buildings, New Church pastors can receive assistance, continued training, and guidance, and congregations can be assisted in securing their new pastors--all through your giving to the Tennessee District Unified Fund.

It is hard to believe that we have finished almost one-third of our fiscal year for the Tennessee District Church of the Nazarene. Springs of living water are flowing through all of these entities listed above. However, for the springs to “gush” up within us, we all need to see this ministry of giving as Christ springing up within us, not as our efforts to manufacture the spring. As Chambers also says: “If you find that His life is not springing up in you as it should, you are to blame--something isobstructing its flow. Was Jesus saying to stay focused on the Source so that you could be blessed personally? No, you are to focus on the Source so that out of you ‘will flow rivers of living water’--irrepressible life (John 7:38).”

The spiritual principle of giving is never based on ability. The three issues in spiritual giving are PRIORITY, TRUST, andOBEDIENCE. We must “pray to the Lord of the harvest” that He will send His resources to bring “rivers of living water” out of our hearts to be a blessing to others of His creation.

It is a blessing and joy to serve with those who are living out our calling to be “rivers of living water.”

LOOKING UP!

II Chronicles 6:20, “May Your eyes be open toward this temple day and night, this place of which You saidYou would put Your name there!” This prayer for every church on our district and ALL houses of worshiparound the globe would bring so much glory to our great God! At our district convention in July, I usedSolomon’s prayer for the temple to pray for US and for our Cuban partners. I know that the Lord is pleased

Work & Witness Coordinator, MickHolcomb & Mission Call Coordinator,Jared Bouton at the SaratogaChurch in Camaguey Cuba.

The “temple” in Camaguey is progressing. We will be able to hear about itfirst-hand as we host Yosvany Roig in Tennessee. As Work/Witness Coordinator,Yosvany makes plans for and hosts all teams. He buys all building materialsand hires local crews for each job. At present, he has seven projects under constructionspread over a distance of 450 miles. So we have been the recipients of this man’s ministryefforts as we have taken our teams to Cuba. You will be blessed to bring adelegation from your church to the Tuesday night service in Nashville orSaturday night service in Memphis! My challenge is for every church tosend a person to Cuba on a team in the next two years.

Rev. Jason Underwood, NYI President584 Franklin RoadFranklin, TN 37069 E-mail: [email protected]

The past few weeks the song “Back to school, Back to school…” from the movie Billy Madison has been rolling around in my head. Our students all around the state are back in the classroom. In youth ministry this is the beginning of a new year for us as well. We have said goodbye to seniors that we have spent countless hours with, and we are welcoming a new group of students.

I am truly excited about ministry with you in the year ahead. Together we have the chance to shape students to make a life long commitment to Christ. In all we do this year my prayer is that we lean on John 3:30, “He must become greater; I must become less”.

Summer Recap:It feels like years ago that we all crossed the creek for 2 weeks of camp together at CGC. This year we saw over 700 attend camp to hear about the “Kingdom”. My hope is that we did not leave what we learned there butwe are seeking new ways to serve the kingdom in the places that God has placed each of us. Thank you to the hundreds of you that came out to support TNYI. We estimated over 400 in attendance this year as we filled Heritage Chapel at Nashville First at our convention.

This year you elected great leadership to take us to the next level.
