THE ACADEMIC COSTUME

The academic procession is one of the oldest traditions of colleges and universities throughout the world. The caps, gowns, and hoods which are seen in the procession of the commencement ceremony are an inheritance from the university scholar of the medieval time of more than six centuries ago.

During the rise of universities, the ordinary dress of the scholar, whether teacher or student, was the dress of a cleric or clerk. This dress, a long gown and sleeveless tunic or, in winter, a long full cloak to which a shoulder length cape was attached, has evolved into the present day academic wardrobe. Since many of the scholars of that time period were members of a monastic order, the attire may also represent a kind of ecclesiastical dress.

The colorful hood, which indicates the discipline and the institution conferring the degree, was originally worn over the head. During the 16th century, caps replaced the hood, and the hood was worn draped over the shoulder. As the caps became larger, they were stiffened with boards and evolved into the present day mortarboard.

The tassel has evolved from a tuft on the top of the medieval scholar’s skull cap. In current usage, tassels are black or another color indicating the field of learning. A gold bullion tassel denotes a doctoral degree.

Most colleges and universities in the United States have adopted the uniform code for costumes drafted by an intercollegiate commission in 1893. Each of the four academic degrees—associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral—has its own distinctive gown and hood. The associate’s and bachelor’s gown has a longer, more narrow, closed sleeve extending below the knee; the arm fits through a slit at the elbow. The master’s gown has longer, closed sleeves with arm slits at the elbow. The doctor’s gown has a full, bell-shaped sleeve trimmed with three bars of velvet. The velvet trim on the gown can be black or a color indicating the wearer’s general field of learning—for example, green for medicine or purple for law. In addition, some select student groups will wear a stole and/or academic cord with their gown. Like the gown and hood, the stole and cord evolved from the clergy. The stole and cord indicate membership in an honors society, academic organization, or a specific HCC association as follows: Gold Cords and Gold Stoles - Phi Theta Kappa (National Honors Society), Green and White Cords - The Honors Program (HCC), Red, White and Blue Cords - U.S.A. Vet-eran, and Red and Black Cords - Educators Rising.
