• Staff – Developed by Guido D’Arezzo

– It is based upon the human hand

– Five lines represent the fingers and thumb

– Tones are identified based upon their placement upon the staff – a line or space

a unit. Unlike a sentence requiring a subject, verb, and predicate, a melody does not have any specific requirements.
