ONE MAN’S STORY

LEAVING A LEGACY

Hannah Ackland

I hope that you were all able to take full advantage of our beautiful Manitoba summer. It always seems to pass in the blink of an eye.

The team at the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba got summer off to a great start with the 21st Annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic. This annual event was a great success and little else is more

precious than the smiles and laughter seen and heard on that day. Thankfully, the clouds parted ways on that special Sunday and 55,000 of you came and enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day at Assiniboine Park. We thank you for that.

We would also like to acknowledge the committee, sponsors and volunteers of the Dr. Goodbear Golf Classic. This tournament celebrated 20 years this past June. In that time, this incredible group has raised over $1.4 million towards the special health care needs of children in Manitoba.

We are also incredibly lucky to have the support of corporations and groups who also organize and plan amazing golf tournaments in support of the Foundation. We wish to thank our friends at the BMO Bear’s Paw Golf Classic, the CanWest Steen Classic, MTS Invitational and so many others.

After a busy first quarter at the Foundation, staff and volunteers were able to slow down for a moment, but we have already hit the ground running as we plan and prepare for the numerous projects and events taking place through the fall and winter.

In this edition of Teddy News, you will be able to read about some of the events we are working on. From our Radiothon in Thompson to the Book Market Paperback Sale, it’s going to be another busy season for us. We hope to see you out at some of those events.

We know it is a busy time now that summer is ending and we settle back into our work routines and children prepare to head back to school. As you strap those backpacks, full of fresh new school supplies, on your little ones, please take a moment to reflect on those children who might not be as fortunate to be running out the door to school. They may be at Children’s Hospital because of an injury or illness.

At the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, our goal is to ensure that the hospital experience is made easier for the kids that have to be here. By funding programs that normalize extended hospital stays, and equipment that makes surgery less invasive, as one example, we are doing all that we can to support the special health care needs of children. We cannot, however, do it without you!

We wish to thank our many generous donors, supporters and volunteers…because children need us!

Sincerely,

Fiona Webster Mourant

President’s Message

Despite gloomy skies several days before, the clouds parted ways on Sunday, May 27 and the sun shone bright for the 55,000 kids, teddy bears and families who made their way to Assiniboine Park for the 21st Annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

The smiles seen, laughter heard and health and safety information learned made the event an incredible success. Thank you to our many volunteers, sponsors and supporters for being a part of this special day.

Thank You Manitoba!

On Thursday, June 7, 2007 the 20th Annual Dr. Goodbear Golf Classic held at Glendale Golf and Country Club raised over $250,000 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. This brings the total raised over 20 years to more than $1.4 million!

“We are proud to support the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba,” said Tournament Co-Chair Jeff Rabb. “It is so important to us to know that we are making a real difference in the health care that children in Manitoba receive.” Despite cloudy skies, golfers came out and enjoyed a fun day out on the links.

“We do it all for the kids,” said Tournament Co-Chair Ian Rabb. “The sponsors, golfers and volunteers have helped make this event a continued success and we thank them for that.”

The Dr. Goodbear Golf Classic is an integral part of the Foundation’s

fundraising efforts. Money raised through the tournament funds vital programs and equipment at Winnipeg Children’s Hospital and pediatric research at the Manitoba Institute of Child Health.

The lives of children living with sickness or injuries will be positively impacted in many ways thanks to a legacy gift from Mr. Maurice (Moe) Kowalson.

Moe was a retired postal worker who lived a humble and full life. He served overseas in the army with the Canadian Postal Core, and upon returning to Canada, eventually became the Superintendent of Postal Carriers. Widowed for more than 30 years, Moe passed away at age 90 in December of 2006. He had no children of his own, but his name will live on thanks to his planned gift in support of the children of Manitoba.

In June of 2007, through the efforts of Moe’s life-long friend, Mr. Albert Olsen, five charities who support children in our province gathered together for a special celebration and presentation. Each charity was presented with a donation from the estate of Mr. Kowalson. The Children’s Hospital

Foundation was thankful to receive $100,000 in support of patient care programs at the Hospital. By taking the time to plan this gift in advance, he ensured that many children would benefit from his lifetime of hard work.

The Children’s Hospital Foundation is very grateful to supporters like Moe Kowalson who understand the importance of supporting child health care. Legacy gifts like Moe’s go a long way to make sure our children have access to the very best health care possible…because children need us!

Leaving A Legacy For Children

Remember when mom told you to eat your vegetables and go outside and play? Turns out mom was right! A healthy, active lifestyle may prevent your child from developing type 2 diabetes, a disease in which the body is not able to control blood sugar properly. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% of diabetes cases in adults and is becoming a growing concern among children and adolescents. Unlike Type 1 diabetes (formerly called Juvenile Diabetes), the body is able to produce insulin, the hormone that controls blood sugar, but the body is desensitized to it. Lifestyle changes, if adhered to, are extremely effective in preventing and treating this condition.

Dr. Jonathan McGavock, a prominent researcher at the Manitoba Institute of Child Heath, is conducting a study to determine the underlying problems in the muscle and liver that lead to Type 2 diabetes in youth. The purpose of the study is to determine if children who develop Type 2 diabetes have changes in their muscle and liver fat that could explain why their blood sugar becomes elevated so rapidly. “We think that fat infiltration into these tissues blocks insulin’s action,” says McGavock. “By measuring the lipids in these tissues using a novel MRI technique that doesn’t involve needles, we may be able to detect some of the earliest risk

factors involved in the progression to Type 2 diabetes.” This information could help physicians target the highest risk children early on with the hopes of preventing them from developing this condition.

McGavock is also conducting a study to determine the impact of exercise training on muscle and liver metabolism in children considered at risk for Type 2 diabetes. The exercise training study compares the effectiveness of three different types of physical activity on diabetes risk factors; (1) Standard Canadian physical activity guidelines (30-60 minutes of general activity), (2) Structured moderate physical activity (walking, jogging or cycling at 70-80% of maximal heart rate) and (3) Vigorous physical activity (interval exercises three times per week with small bursts approaching maximal heart rates). According to McGavock, “we hope to understand the ideal ‘dose’ of activity that parents and teachers need to administer to reduce diabetes in adolescents.”

Matthew of Winnipeg is 14 years old and one of the first participants in the exercise training study. He meets up with Dr. McGavock and his team after school two or three times per week for 60-90 minutes of activity that includes cycling, racquetball and jogging.

Matthew’s mom was flicking through television channels one day when she landed on Shaw television’s piece about Dr. McGavock’s study at the Institute. “I heard, ‘Do you have a child age 13-18 who exercises less than 30 minutes a day and has a family history of diabetes?’ That caught my attention!” When Matthew was tested to see if he would be a good candidate to participate in the study, the blood tests revealed early markers of Type 2 diabetes. “I didn’t realize how important this study was until I saw Matthew’s results and understood how valuable it would be to us personally. I was shown what happens when the pancreas is not getting the insulin out- you could really see the early warning signs,” she said.

Since joining the study, Matthew has inspired both his mom and ten year-old brother to join him in the gym. “After a workout I feel tired but I guess that’s kinda normal,” says Matthew. He explains, “Exercising has helped me to run a lot more and a lot longer than I used to and yes, it is fun!” Is the whole family on the road to a healthier, active lifestyle when the study is over? “I’m going to continue exercising for sure, says Matthew –but probably not as intense!”

There are approximately 200 children in Manitoba currently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, with one new case being discovered each week. This number is projected to double by 2025 unless changes are made in childhood lifestyles.

Dr. McGavock is looking for 100 adolescents, 13-18 years of age to participate in the exercise training study. If you have a child who you feel may be at risk for diabetes, based on their lifestyle or family history and are interested in the study, please contact Dr. McGavock at 204.789.3591.

Eat Healthy. Be Active. Have Fun!

The Manitoba Institute of Child Health has formed a Clinical Research Unit (CRU) to provide support services to doctors who do pediatric research. New discoveries and advancements in child health are the results of pediatric research, but deciding whether to let your child participate in a research study or clinical trial is an important decision for parents and families.

The skilled and knowledgeable nurses at the CRU have experience in pediatric care and an appreciation of parents’ concerns. Recruitment is the first step in

building a relationship of trust between research staff and parents. “It is vital to ensure that parents understand the methods and procedures of a study,” says Cory Kress who is a recruitment nurse with the Unit. “The information needs to be clearly explained in easily understood language and parents need to feel comfortable asking questions. Participation is completely voluntary and parents should not feel coerced or pressured in any way. We appreciate the time parents and participants give listening to our recruitment nurses,

even if they ultimately decide not to participate in a study.”

The CRU is currently working on more than 20 studies involving children in the hospital and at various pediatricians’ clinics. Some of the studies include; examining the quality of life in children who have been newly diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis, childhood strokes and a new multi-national study, taking place in Australia, New Zealand and Canada that investigates whole-body cooling for infants born with possible brain injuries. The CRU is also working with local pediatricians’ offices on three vaccine studies.

To find out more about child health research being conducted at the Clinical Research Unit, call 204.789.3206 or visit the web at www.mich.ca. Link to the brochure SHOULD MY CHILD PARTICIPATE IN A RESEARCH STUDY?
