Dr. Gerald Buchoff: A Brief Overview of the American
Veterinary Medical Association
In 1863, 40 veterinary surgeons from seven Eastern states met in convention to form the
American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Among its original officers was renowned, French-
trained practitioner Dr. Alexandre Liautard, generally considered the father of modern veterinary medicine.
Today, the organization provides numerous benefits to its members. Among these are:
-- Legislative advocacy-- Accreditation of veterinary schools-- Professional and ethical guidance
-- Publications including The Journal of the AVMA and The American Journal of Veterinary Research, professional
reference materials, and membership information-- Networked access to volunteer opportunities
-- Career placement, insurance, and professional discounts-- Continuing education guidance and an associated student
organization (SCAVMA).
The AVMA boasts more than 82,000 members who provide care for more than 80 million cats, 70 million dogs, millions of horses, birds, and diverse pets and farm animals of all descriptions. Many members are
active in associated disciplines, including medical and veterinary research and food safety assurance.
