EDUCATION KIDS’ COLLEGE

Wayne County Community College District is excited to offer Kids’College classes to youth 4-17 years of age. Our goal is to develop andexpand students’ interests, stimulate creativity, provide uniquelearning opportunities and a fun experience on a college campus.

Our class offerings are taught in a hands-on fashion with an accenton fun. We offer topics from college prep, sports, performing andtraditional arts, reading and writing, science and math, andcomputers, to leisure activities like ballet or scrapbooking.

All Kids College students must com-plete the “Emergency Informa-tion for Youth Students Form.”Please give the completed form tothe instructor during the first day ofclass.

CLASS CAPACITYKids' College Camp programs are self-supporting and require a minimum number of students enrolledbefore a class will run. To avoid inconvenience to students, Kids' College Camps with low enrollmentwill be cancelled one week in advance to avoid disappointment. Refunds will be generated toparticipants of cancelled camps.

EMPLOYEE BACKGROUND CHECKAll Kids' College Camp instructors directly working with students have passed a criminal back-groundcheck.

DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP PROCEDURESFor safety reasons, students under 18 years of age are not to be on campus unless accompanied by anauthorized adult or attending Kids' College Camp programs. Your child's safety is our number oneconcern; you are required to Sign In and Sign Out students on a daily basis. Students must bepicked up within 15 minutes after dismissal of their program. Repeated late Pick-up occurrenceswill result in termination from Kids' College Camp with No refunds.

YOUTH STUDENT EMERGENCY INFORMATION FORM (WAIVER AND RELEASE OFLIABILITY)All youth students must present a signed Youth Students Emergency Information Form to theirinstructor before programs begin on the first day of class. You must complete a form for eachchild. The form is conveniently located in our Continuing Education schedule book. (NOTE:Only parents or legal guardians completing this Form are authorized to drop-off or pick-up yourchild unless an alternate is indicated at the bottom and presents proper I.D.*)

BEHAVIOR GUIDELINESProper standards of conduct are necessary to protect the health, safety and well-being of all Kids'College Camp students. Behavior that might interfere with the educational process is unacceptable.Students will be respectful to other students and staff. Students will be careful with college equipmentand property and the property of other students. Parents will be contacted if their child is involved inany unacceptable situations during camp. Appropriate college personnel, reserves the right, at any time,to exclude any child from activities due to failure or inability to follow as directed, any and all rulesand/or policies for participants. No refunds.

COMPUTER USE AGREEMENTCertain camps may use the World Wide Web (www) or internet as part of their curriculum developedby the instructor. With this educational opportunity comes responsibility, to be shared by the student,parent/guardian and college staff. Students will use the software that pertains to their camp. They mayuse the www/internet when the instructor gives the permission. Students should tell their instructorsimmediately if they encounter information that is inappropriate or makes them feel uncomfortable.Students shall not give out personal information while online. Parents will be contacted if their child isinvolved in any unacceptable situations while using the computer.

WHAT STUDENTS SHOULD DO Students may bring their non-refrigerated, non-microwavable, peanut-free lunches and snacks,according to their schedule. Campers will learn about careers in EMS and Firefighter Services as well assome first aid skills to control bleeding and splint fractures. Motorized Toy Car ChallengeUtilizing A World In Motion Curriculum, student design teams though hands onactivities discover force and friction, simple machines, levers and gears, torque.Etc. Mathematics involved provide understanding ratio and proportion, it’srelationship to gear ratios and wheel radius. Through hands on activities studentswill perform data retrieval and collection while applying statistical analysis.Presentations to be given at the end of the class as work to be on display at theend of the camp.

Fun with FrostingLove to help out in the kitchen? Are you a fan of cake decorating? Now youcan learn how to decorate like the pros. Learn how to make frosting fromscratch, to color your frosting, and to pipe frosting through a decorating bag.You will decorate cakes, cupcakes, and sugar cookies using a variety of flowerpatterns, rosettes, dots, basket weave and shell borders.

Fuel Cell ChallengeUtilizing A World In Motion Curriculum, student design teams will researchnew and developing technology. Through hands on activities, students willlearn the development and use of fuel cells; types of fuel cells; and byexperimentation with a proton exchange membrane fuel cell produceelectricity to power and electric motor. Completed work will be on display atthe end of the camp.

Glider ChallengeUtilizing A World In Motion Curriculum, student design teams will produce twoproducts: a gliding toy and a book of detailed instructions on how to build andfly the toy. Completed work will be on display at the end of the camp.

“On The Cover of A Magazine”Design your own magazine cover! Learn how to manipulate your favoritepictures and create a magazine layout starring you or your favorite subjectusing Photoshop and Illustrator software. Bring your favorite photos on a USBport flash drive to bring to class on the first day.

American Sign LanguageThis beginning course is for those students with no previous experience in signlanguage. Students will be taught the basics of sign language and vocabulary.They will practice both receptive and expressive skills, communicate in signlanguage, finger spelling, meet new people and have FUN!

Foreign Language ExplorationStudents will explore cultural facets of different languages. In our LanguageInstitute. They will discover and practice common phrases of greeting,introduction and complimenting of each other, and making small talk.

Hands N Feet 3D SculptureIntroduction to 3 D Sculpture by creating molds of your hands and feet. Paint,mount and embellish your own inspired originals! Students should dress formess! Students will be invited to submit their favorite Works of Art for a GalleryReception and put on Exhibit at the end of the Camp! 5

From Junk to TreasureLearn how to take normal household items and build artistic structures and seeobjects in a whole different way. You will be limited only by your ownresourceful imagination. Students will be required to bring in some items.Students should dress for mess! Students will be invited to submit their favoriteWorks of Art for a Gallery Reception and put on Exhibit at the end of thecamp.

Forensic PhotographyEver wanted to know what it is like to be a member of a CSI team? Learn howto use a digital single lens camera for mock crime scene photography. Learnwhat to look for, how to approach a scene, how to maneuver on a scene, andmuch more. Students will learn how to capture and expose digital images thatthey may want to use for scrapbooking.

Avengers Assemble: Superheroes, Gaming, andCybersecurity

Participants will learn how to using coding and other cybersecurity principlesto develop their own animated superhero short (including super powers)focused on helping Detroit transform into a healthier and safer place to live,work, and play. They will also develop a playable prototype of a STEMawareness video game as a group.

Dance Counts, Math Moves This class uses improvisational movement games and dance making structuresto strengthen student understanding of foundational math and ideas.
