Approximately one-half of our students are in need of remediation in either English or math. Developmental courses were not having the success that we wanted.
We needed to shift our paradigm and address adult learner needs while engaging our faculty to bring creative solutions to the table.
Our theory is that emphasis on academic support in collaborations with remediation
will improve the benefits of mainstreaming developmental students and will also encourage other students to
seek mentoring through the Learning Center and other avenues so that they
can achieve higher levels of excellence.
No assessment required during the enrollment process
All students without previous transfer credit are assessed for English, math and
reading in UNIV 103 Academic and Professional Success during. Students will receive a learning plan for remediation.
AIU began a pilot with another vendor to assess
reading, writing, math and to generate a learning plan
that was criterion referenced—that is,
addressed specific areas of focus that student was
deficient
Products were focused upon K-12No flexibility in products
We then began a new search of vendors.

In Quarter 3, 2011, the University will migrate ground students to the Accuplacer (College Board) assessment
in English, Reading and Writing.
How It WorksComputer Adaptive Testing
ACCUPLACER is an adaptive test. This means that the questions are chosen for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions. This technique selects just the right questions for your ability level.
ACCUPLACER provides the opportunity for placement and diagnostic assessments.
Testing TimeThe multiple choice tests are untimed. The essay test may be
timed or untimed
