DESCRIPTION

Dr. Blair Csuti, wildlife conservationist, gave an enlightening talk about the physical problems caused by confinement for captive elephants. He took part in a study of elephants at the Oregon Zoo and served as senior editor on a book about elephant foot problems related to captivity. Dr. Csuti was one of three speakers in a forum presented by FOZE, Free the Oregon Zoo Elephants on July 24, 2014 in Portland, OR.

The Elephant’s Foot

• There is general consensus that lack of exercise, long hours standing on hard substrates, and contamination resulting from standing in their own excreta are major contributors to elephant foot problems.
