In a security scare, a dummystun-grenade was today foundon board an Air India jumboplane as it landed at Jeddah inthe wee hours, which the airlineattempted to downplay but wasrebuffed by Civil AviationMinister Ashok Gajapathi Rajuwho called it a "failure".
Air India suspended its two
officials in-charge of security inMumbai and Hyderabad as theminister intervened while a jointteam of the airlines and theBureau of Civil Aviation Securityrushed to Mumbai to investigatethe incident and fix responsibility.
After the incident came tolight, Air India initially issued a
press release that "after screen-ing the aircraft and the objectwhich was found to be a plasticwrapper, the Jeddah airportsecurity cleared the aircraft forfurther operations."
But Raju soon countered itsaying a stun grenade, whichhad no explosive in it, wasfound on the upper deck busi-ness class of the Boeing 747-400, which was operating flightAI-965 on Mumbai-Hyderabad-Jeddah route. He said there wasno threat to passengers.
"The grenade may haveremained after the mock drill ....It has BSF markings," Raju toldreporters at Vizianagaram inAndhra Pradesh. The securitydrill was carried out by NationalSecurity Guards between
September 24-27 at select air-ports and aircraft across thecountry to check the alertness ofthe crew and others con-cerned.(PTI)
