Warm greetings to you all as we enter the new year 2015.

It is also a time to take stock ofour achievements during the pastyear and plan ahead. Thecertification process by the MarineStewardship Council (MSC), UKfor the Short neck clam fishery atAshtamudi Lake was completedsuccessfully giving a boost to ourefforts at developing sustainablemarine fisheries that also protectthe ecosystem. This success tastes

sweet as it is the first fishery certified for sustainability in India and only the thirdin Asia. The official release of the all India marine fisheries landings data, whichhenceforth will be an annual feature is another praiseworthy initiative. This enablesaccess to data on marine fish landings collected using a scientific multistage stratifiedrandom sampling method developed by the Institute, to all stakeholders includingState Fisheries Departments who can now concentrate more on fisherymanagement and monitoring activities that requires priority attention in the variousmaritime states. On the mariculture front, the Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture(IMTA) trials using high value finfish and seaweed at Mandapam has been verysuccessful and this paves the way for developing the first full-fledged integratedmarine fish farm in the country that will help to boost marine fish production inthe long run. We are in the 50th commemorative year of the International IndianOcean Expedition (IIOE) in which Indian researchers contributed significantly.Hence it was apt time that the Institute along with the Marine Biological Associationof India successfully hosted the International Symposium "Marine Ecosystems:Challenges and Opportunities MECOS 2" in which many scientists and researchersaround the globe participated. I am also glad that the Swachh Bharat message hasbeen taken up wholeheartedly and with active participation by the entire CMFRIstaff to spread the message of cleanliness and to achieve the aim of Clean India by2019 envisaged by the Govt. of India.

Things have not been entirely rosy as the cyclone Hudhud left vast devastation inits trail when it hit the coast of Visakhapatnam on12th October, 2014. The damageto the offshore fish farming cages and the broodstock kept in these cages was aserious setback which has to be addressed in the coming days. The extensivedamage to the office and hatchery buildings as well as the green cover in thecampus has to be recouped. During this year, along with our work to promotesuccessful capture and culture fisheries research it shall be our endeavour todevelop new products especially with regards to diagnostic aids in fish pathologyand nutraceuticals from fish.

Let me conclude with best wishes for a happy and successful new year 2015 toeach one of you.

The Marine Stewardship Council(MSC) is a global, non-profit and

independent organization working toreverse the decline in global fishstocks through the use of marketincentives. The MSC's fishery eco-labelling and certification programmeallows consumers to identify andsupport environmentally responsiblefishing practices through purchasingdecisions. Consumer support forsustainable fishing in the market placeleads to economic benefits for well-managed fisheries and long-termsustainability of fisheries, ensuringsecure livelihoods and continuousavailability of fish for food. With itsseal of approval on more than 6% ofall wild-caught fish, MSC is the world'sbiggest eco-label for sustainableseafood. If a fishery is successfullycertified against the MSC Standard, products from the fishery can be sold

with the MSC's unique ecolabel, whichidentifies seafood as coming from awell-managed fishery.

identifying this small-scale fishery asan ideal candidate for MSCcertification. After three years ofrelentless hard work, perseveranceand innovation, the WWF and CMFRItogether have finally achieved alandmark in Indian fisheries byobtaining MSC certification for theShort neck clam fishery of AshtamudiLake, Kerala. This is a remarkableachievement in many ways - it is thefirst MSC certification in India, thethird in Asia (after Vietnam and theMaldives) and one of the very few intropical waters. Benefits of certificationinclude potential for premium prices, access to new markets, preferred

Successful implementation of IMTA

The Mandapam Regional Centre ofCMFRI had been developing

technologies for the seed productionof high value finfish and farmingtechniques such as sea cage farming. The seed production technologies ofcobia and silver pompano wasstandardized and their farmingmethods were also successfullydemonstrated. One of the anticipatedissues while expanding the sea cagefarming is the environmentaldegradation and consequent diseaseproblems. In this context, the idea ofbio-mitigation along with theincreased biomass production whichcan be achieved by integratingdifferent groups of commerciallyimportant species with varied feedinghabits was considered. This concept, known as Integrated Multi-TrophicAquaculture (IMTA) has importance atglobal level.

The scientists took the initiative toimpart this concept of integratedfarming to the fishermen group ofMunaikadu village who were alreadypractising commercial level seaweedfarming. The centre had given threenumbers of low cost cages of size 4.5m× 4.5 m× 3.5 m to be stocked withcobia fingerlings at the rate of 100numbers per cage. The seed material(720 kg) for the seaweed was alsosupplied for integrating with thecages. Cobia fingerlings (average 20cm length and 50 g weight) werestocked during the first week of April

2014. A total of 12 numbers ofseaweed rafts (12× 12 feet) at therate of 60 kg of seaweed per raft wereintegrated with the cobia cages duringsecond week of September 2014. Thedaily feeding of the stocked fishes withtrash fishes, maintenance of cagesand the required watch and ward weredone entirely by the fishermen group. The harvest was made on 30th

October 2014.

A total of 652 kg of cobia washarvested. Their length ranged from59 to 83 cm and weight from 1.8 to4.2 kg (average weight 3.25 kg). Thefarm gate price of cobia was ` 210per kg. The total seaweed harvestedwas 2,700 kg wet weight which waskept as seeding material for the nextcrop. It was observed that theseaweed rafts integrated with cobiacages had a better average yield of225 kg per raft compared to 150 kgper raft in those which were notintegrated.

Harvest of cobia and seaweed

The harvest was handed over to thetraders by Dr. M. Karthikeyan, DeputyDirector (Fisheries), Tamil Nadu. Dr.Vaibhav Manthri, Scientist-in-Charge,CSMCRI - Marine Algal ResearchStation, Mandapam gave thefelicitation address. Dr. G.Gopakumar,Scientist-in-Charge and Head,Mariculture Division of CMFRI presidedover the harvest programme andcreated awareness about the benefitsof integrated farming.

It is felt that this practice is effectiveboth in terms of increasing theproduction and also for alleviating theorganic load to the environment due tofish farming. The present success canbe considered as the initial step towardsthe development of a full-fledgedintegrated marine fish farm atMunaikadu village. This will become firstof its kind in the country where seaweed,mussel/oyster, lobsters, high valuemarine food fishes and ornamentalfishes can be farmed together.(Reported by Mandapam Regional Centre)

Floating carcass of Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphinsighted off Kochi

The area off Kochi is one of thefavorite habitats of dolphins and

it is understood that there is a residentpopulation. Sighting of dolphins in thisarea and in the bar mouth regionduring high tide is common. Thoughwe have observed beached carcassesalong Kerala coast, floating carcasshas not been observed so far in thecruises undertaken in the region since2009. During the regular cruiseonboard FRV Silver Pompano, a deadIndo-Pacific Humpback dolphinSousa chinensis (Osbeck, 1765) wassighted on 18th November, 2014 at24 metre depth off Cochin (10° 02’26’’N; 76° 04’ 32’’E). Plastics and non-biodegradable wastes form themost important threat to the marine ecosystem in

the 21st century. Plastics have become indispensable tomankind, but they need to be used safely and carefully.Sea is the ultimate sink of plastics discarded carelesslyon the roads or elsewhere via creeks, rivers / estuaryand beaches. With exposure to sunlight and rain, plastics break down into micro-plastics, which fishesand other marine organisms intake accidently. The toxicchemicals in the plastic thus reaching the fishesultimately reach back into humans who relish seafood.

In order to convey the gravity of this situation and itsconsequences, the Fishery Environment ManagementDivision arranged an installation art in the MahatmaGandhi Beach, Fort Kochi. It was the sculpture of ahuge mud crab prepared with debris like plastics anddiscarded fishing nets collected from the beach andsea during one week. The installation work started on15th December 2014 was completed on 29th December2014. Named as MAD CRAB it occupied a groundarea of 400 sq.ft having a size of 17 ft height and 19 ftwidth. It was inaugurated for exhibition on 30th

December 2014, by Dr. A.Gopalakrishnan, Director,CMFRI. It will remain on the beach till 28th February,2015, with the objective of creating awareness against

discarded plastics aswell as to convey the message ofresponsibility to the citizens, for keeping our beachesand environment clean and protect our marine habitatand fisheries. From December15th to 1st of January, more than 10 events took place, at Fort Kochi Beachin connection with Biennale and Kochi Carnival andthe public who took part in these events, were alsoviewing MAD CRAB on the beach. The activitiesorganized in connection with the MAD CRAB awarenessprogramme also included the collection of plastics andother discarded materials from beaches by the publicand students and contributing them for completion ofthe art installation. This way community participationwas also ensured during the groundwork of thesculpture. About thirteen artists such as PramodKrishna, Antony Felix, Manoj Perumbavoor, ArunKadammanitta, Radeep Erumeli, Najeeb, Naushad andothers were involved in the creation of the sculpture. The Institute also prepared posters for this awarenessprogram named "BEWARE!!! CRAB!"and exhibited themaround the MAD CRAB. The venture was also supportedby M/S. Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal, ErnakulamDistrict Tourism Promotion Council, Joy Alukkas groupand the Heritage Conservation Society, Fort Kochi.
