PEOPLE AT THE PARKSMeet Steve Krotz. Steve is our Landscape Maintenance Supervisor, supervising 5 full time employees, numerous part-time employees, and overseeing all landscape maintenance throughout the district. According to Paul Cathey, Superintendent of Parks & Planning, Steve handles the long term planning and daily maintenance of 54 sites, which include D62 properties; the daily needs and long term development of all athletic fields; the operation of the greenhouse, and the management of our Tree of Life program, urban forest, and EAB ecology project.

Steve manages and maintains approximately 400+ acres of land in the district, from mowing to planting beds to tree management, including high profile areas such as Prairie Lakes Park, North Lake Park, Mystic Waters, and Mt. View Adventure Center. He assists with golf course maintenance, and much more. Steve and his crew often participate in capital project development, and keep costs in line by performing a great deal of the work in-house for projects including the landscaping for the West Park redevelopment, the North Lake Park redevelopment and the new Chippewa Pool, along with every one of our playground renovations. Steve is an exceptionally talented and creative designer who is passionate about his work, which is why our parks look so beautiful all year round.

    Q. What do you like most about your job? Seeing how our residents enjoy each of our parks and facilities. Every season is a new challenge for me and my crew, and that helps keep the job fresh and exciting. I also like working with and mentoring young staff members. Its rewarding to have them become part of the profession, for both landscaping and Parks & Recreation.

    Q. What is your favorite park? Tough question! We have so many unique locations: Lake Park, because of the vistas, Cumberland Terrace is a little gem tucked away in a neighborhood, and the golf courses are great. If you make me pick one, it would be Central Park. Thats a particularly beautiful park in an urban setting, and one that makes this Park District special.

    Q. What is the most significant change you have seen at the Des Plaines Park District? The combination of technology and the advancements in plant maintenance materials have helped us significantly, in recent years, especially with the financial crunch that hit everyone. We can do more with less now, and do it in a safer, more environmentally friendly way. One example is how weve been able to save so many of our ash trees, which really feels good.

  • Digital Movie with AnimationAges 812Animation caught the imagination of Hollywood leading to the creation of several memorable cartoon characters and movies. It has now taken the world by storm as a demonstrator of art & technology combined. Animated movies are the outcome of the combination of a variety of talents, imagination, innovation and technical skills. In this class children discuss themes, write the script for their animated movies, and learn the tricks of digital animation. Animated sequences are captured to the PC, and storyboarded for editing to add voice, special effects, music, background sounds, title and credits, etc. Participants carry home the creativity project on their USB flash drive for family show-time. Children work in teams with PCs and technical equipment, a complete set of which is provided to each team. Children are encouraged to bring LEGO toys and other props that they would need to make their animated movie. dvtMin/Max: 6/12Technosaurus, InstructorPLCC, Meeting Room 28 weeksMondays, 7:458:45pm 9/1611/4R: $129/NR: $167 #2-55310-1
