Australia’s Biggest Quilting Bee

2011 activities are off to a good start. Quilters Down The Track conducted a raffle at the Freds Pass

Show with a choice of three prizes. Rhonnda Franklin of Bees Creek chose the Quilter’s Hamper; J

Tracey of Barker Road, Howard Springs was thrilled to win the quilt donated by Sue Hansen, and

Emma Kennedy of Nightcliff Road, Rapid Creek was very happy with the Goodies Hamper.

Internet Bytes

Many quilters have blogs on the Internet which make for interesting reading. If you have a

blog or two that you enjoy and would like to share with DP&Q members, just send an email and

the websites will be published here. Thanks to Joy Baker for the first cuts. (!)

Fabric Bowls

Janelle Northcott provided us with an interesting project on Saturday 21st May, how to make a

square fabric bowl from Linda Johansen’s book Fast Fun and Easy Fabric Bowls. Janelle provided

us with several examples and showed us how to proceed.

The five of us enthusiastically made our bowls. It was amazing how each bowl took its shape using

“Peltex” and fabric. Peltex is a double sided iron-on very heavy stiffener and moulded into shape

for the bowls. It could also be used in handbags, folders etc.

Thank you Janelle, for an entertaining afternoon and we are looking forward to seeing a dinner set

come out of this workshop.

Time for a Smile. I think I have found inner peace. I read an article that said the way to achieve inner peace is

to finish things I had started. Today I finished two bags of potato chips, a packet of Tim

Tams, a six pack of soft drink and a block of chocolate. (I feel better already.)

Flying in Circles Quilt Block

The Flying in Circles Quilt Block is made

from three simple units, Flying Geese,

half square triangle units, and a fabric

square.

There are many ways to make Flying

Geese units, but we'll sew squares to

corners of a rectangle, and then cut

off the excess and press.

Finished Block Size: 12-inches square

Cutting instructions for one Flying in Circles quilt block

Darkest geese points:

• Cut one 3½" x 16½" strip of dark fabric; square up one end and cut eight 2" x 3½" segments from

it.

Medium dark geese points:

• Cut one 3½" x 16½" strip of medium-dark fabric; square up one end and cut eight 2" x 3½"

segments from it.

Background Fabric:

• Cut one 2" x 42" strip of fabric reserved for geese backgrounds. Cut another strip that measures

2" x 25". Square up an end of each and cut thirty-two 2" squares.

• Cut two 3⅞" squares.

Centre square and half square triangles:

• Cut one 6½" square.

• Cut two 3⅞" squares.

Assemble Flying Geese and Half Square Triangle Units

© Janet Wickell

Make the Flying Geese

1. Use a pencil or

permanent marker to

draw a diagonal line

from one corner to the

opposite corner on

each of your thirty-two

2" squares.

2. Place a square right

side down on one end

of a Flying Geese

rectangle, carefully

aligning the edges of

both pieces. Hold

together with a straight

pin placed away from

the marked line.

Page 9: DPAQ Newsletter June 11 - territorystories.nt.gov.au · Page 2 of 15 Calendar of Events 2011 6 June June General Meeting, 7 for 7.30 at the clubrooms. 10 June Entries close for Territory

3. Sew a seam on the marked line, and then trim off the corner, leaving about a ¼" seam

allowance past the seam line. Press the seam allowance towards the darker fabric.

4. Repeat to sew another square to the opposite side of the rectangle, making sure the square's

marked line is aligned as shown above, so that it forms a "peak" with the first sewn corner. Trim

excess corner fabric and press.

5. Repeat to assemble sixteen Flying Geese units. To speed things up, chain piece a square to one

side of each rectangle, trim and press all, and then chain piece squares to the opposite sides of

rectangles. Set aside.

Make the Half Square Triangle Units

1. Mark a diagonal line on both 3⅞" background squares, just like you did the smaller squares. Pair

the squares with the darker 3⅞" squares and follow the instructions (see May 2011 Snippets) for

making sandwiched units, to sew four triangle squares.

The method isn't quite the same as we used for Flying Geese, so be sure to refer to the instructions if

you are not familiar with the technique.

Assemble the Flying in Circles Quilt Block

© Janet Wickell

Sew the Flying Geese Units Together

1. Sort your geese into two piles -- a

pile for each colour.

2. Select a unit from the darkest

geese pile and place it right side

up on your sewing table. Place a

unit from the less dark pile on top

of it, right sides together and

matching edges carefully. The

geese triangles should point the

same direction.

3. Sew the two together with a ¼"

seam allowance along the edge

where background triangles

Territory Quilts Exhibition 2011

General Information

1. Entry Conditions Entrants must be either

• A resident of the Northern Territory (NT)

or

• A current, individual financial member of Darwin Patchworkers & Quilters (DPAQ) who has for part of the membership lived in the NT

The quilt is not permitted to have been previously exhibited at any other exhibition, including any Territory Regional Shows.

The committee has the right to refuse any or all entries. Acceptance of an entry does not automatically guarantee display of the quilt at the Exhibition. Each quilt will be entered in one category only. Entries must have been entirely made by the

exhibitor, except for entries in Category O3

Group/Collaborative Quilt, and Category O4 Commercially Quilted.

Two or more people must make Group Quilts (O3). The exhibitor must be the Owner of the quilt and must acknowledge all other parties. The Exhibitor must satisfy the Entry Conditions, i.e. Resident of NT or current individual financial member of DPAQ who has for part of the membership lived in the NT. Quilts must be submitted complete (including hanging sleeve, please refer clause 9) and in good, clean condition, (no animal hair or offensive odors) Commercial pre-packaged kits (e.g. pre-cut, pre-stamped or combination of fabric and pattern kits such as block of the month) will be accepted and should be entered into category O5 - Quilters Choice (Any Other Item).

2. Definitions Definition of “Professional” A Professional Quilter is defined as someone who teaches or publishes in the field of quilting, sells, designs or participates in making quilts for financial gain and/or has won Best of Show or two

blue ribbons in any major judged competition, excluding Viewers Choice. Definition of “Financial gain” Financial gain is defined as: any amount above the cost of creating the quilt, cost of creating any article, design, teaching aids including samples, notes and travel expenses. A Major show is a State or Territory Guild, judged exhibition or competition, a National or International competition or exhibition.

Having exhibited as a “professional”, amateur status cannot be resumed.

NOTE: This definition has been taken directly

from the ACQ (Australian Council of Quilters) definitions.

3. Copyright: It is the responsibility of the quilt maker to obtain written permission and pay any fee regarding the use of copyright material. A copy of the written permission must be attached to the entry form. If you used a purchased pattern, or a pattern from a book or magazine, or a pattern taught in a workshop, you have bought the right to use the pattern for personal use. This includes displaying your quilt in an exhibition. You need to acknowledge or attribute your source in the Quilt Profile. If you have copied an image from a postcard or painting, or book or photograph, you may have breached copyright law and need to seek permission, from the copyright owner, to show your quilt. If someone else has drawn a design, or taken a photograph, they own the copyright to that design. The original item does not need to have displayed a copyright sign or warning. The act of drawing the design, taking the photograph, gives the artist or designer copyright on the design. Copyright does not attach to techniques or to the vast majority of traditional patchwork and appliqué block designs.

4. Number of Entries For the exhibition held in the year 20011, there will be no limit to the number of entries per exhibitor per category. However the quilts will only be exhibited if space is available. The exhibitor will be asked to nominate their order of preference in which the quilts will be hung. If space is restricted, it may be necessary to limit the number of entries exhibited.

5. Entry Forms Entry forms, with fees, and photograph of entry, must be received by:

Friday 10th June 2011 Each quilt entered will require a separate Entry Form and separate Quilt Profile. Each Entrant is requested to complete a ‘Quilter Profile’ and provide a colour photograph of themselves. These will be made available to the public at the Exhibition and a copy will be kept for the Archive records of DPAQ. Electronic and hard copy photographs will be acceptable.

6. Entry Fees Entry Fees are non-refundable, once an entry has been accepted.

th June 11.

7. Labelling your Quilt. Upon receipt of your Entry you will be given two labels. One will be for the back of your quilt, and the other will be for the quilt carry bag. The Label for the back of your quilt should be pinned or tacked to the bottom edge of the quilt. If you have already labeled your quilt then you will need to cover that with the Entry label or with some other fabric i.e. calico so that your quilt can not be identified other than by the Entry number. The Label for the Quilt carry bag should be pinned or tacked to the top centre of the bag.

8. Sending a Photograph with the Entry form

One of the conditions of entry asks you to send a photograph of your quilt with your entry form. It is not necessary for the quilt to be finished; a photograph of work in progress is acceptable. The photograph will be used to assist with sorting the exhibits into the Gallery space. If your photograph is not true to colour, please attach a small swatch of the main fabric(s). The planning of the exhibition layout starts immediately after the close of entries so sending a photograph at a later date is of no use to the Committee. Failure to send a photograph may mean that your quilt will not be displayed to its best advantage. Electronic and hard copy photos will be accepted.

9. Hanging Sleeve To enable hanging, each quilt must have two 10cms (4”) deep double fabric sleeves sewn to the quilts (no pins), one at the top and one at the lower edge of the quilt. Miniatures & Small quilts are to have appropriate size sleeves and rod supplied. Quilts without sleeves may not be displayed.

10. Quilt Carry Bag Please deliver your quilt in a suitable bag, onto which you have pinned or tacked the Label that was sent to you. Ideally the bag should be an APPROPRIATE SIZE that completely covers your quilt and can be closed. Pillow case protectors are ideal, and very cheap to purchase from any variety store, or you could make a bag especially for transporting quilts. Plastic or paper shopping bags are unsuitable.

11. Delivery of Quilts. You will be advised closer to the Exhibition when and where you should deliver your quilts.

12. Collection of Quilts You will be advised closer to the Exhibition when and where you should collect your quilts.

13. Insurance, Packing and Shipping costs. Entrants are responsible for arrangement and payment of any packaging, shipping and insurance of items in transit both ways and for the duration of the exhibition.

14. Photography

DPAQ will be taking photos for their archives. These will be added to a CD which will be available for a nominal price after the exhibition.

To enable us to photograph your quilt and

to protect the Intellectual Property rights

of your exhibited Quilt we are now

required to have your written permission

(this is included on the entry form).

Examples of breaching your IP rights is when images are innocently reproduced in a Club Newsletter or posted onto someone’s Web page where you have no control over how the image is used and for what purpose. If you choose not to have your quilt photographed the Exhibition Committee will do everything reasonably possible to prevent the public from taking photographs. This will be achieved in part by placing a sign which would interfere with the image across your exhibit. You should also make yourself aware that if you allow images of your entry to be taken and if you should be lucky enough to win a major prize which would make your quilt eligible to be exhibited in another competition, then you might have placed your potential future entry in breach of the conditions of the subsequent competition.

15. Sitting Rosters All local entrants will be encouraged to sit at the exhibition for at least one Session. You will be contacted six weeks prior to the exhibition to arrange a time when you are available. Your time will be greatly appreciated and is vital to the success of the Exhibition.

Territory Quilts 2011 Exhibition Categories

16. Categories Entries in each category must comply with the criteria set out in the Category definition. A 5cm tolerance is acceptable on quilt sizes.
