New York City By Stephanie Miller
New York City is my favorite city in the world, and I’m very lucky to live so close to it. Some people
don’t like all the crowds and noise it has, but I prefer it that way. There’s so much to do and see that
you never can be bored. There are many museums such as the Museum of Natural History and the
Metropolitan Museum of Art. There’s also Broadway and it’s always nice to just walk around and look
at all the skyscrapers. Central Park is a beautiful park in the center of the city with much to see and
do. In the summer, it’s perfect to pack up a lunch and sit by the water to watch the boats. There are
also some great rocks for the kids to climb; I have very fond memories of climbing and running on
the rocks with my family. Also, you never know when you just might happen to see a bride and
groom strolling around the park with a photographer close behind. Summer isn’t the only time you
can enjoy the parks' beauty. Winter is the perfect time to take a quiet walk through the park. The
paths are cleared of the snow and there are plenty of other walkers in the winter, just as there are in
the summer. If you’re lucky you’ll be able to find the beautiful Literary Walk in the park where the
trees line the walkway with lamp posts and benches go all the way down to the end. It’s absolutely
beautiful in the winter, just as it is in any other season.

Fifth Avenue may be where the rich and famous shop, but there is no reason why you can’t go and
have a look at all the stores. Fifth Avenue is lined with big brand name stores such as Louis Vuitton,
Tiffany & Co. and Juicy Couture. Although those are fun stores to look in, you can almost never afford
anything there. Even though it is also expensive, one of the more affordable stores on Fifth Avenue
would be the American Girl doll store; it used to be my favorite place to shop. No girl should go to
Fifth Avenue without getting a glimpse of the inside of the store. It has everything imaginable for your
American Girl doll, from dresses and shoes, to braces and glasses. There are three floors of nothing but
dolls, clothes, and accessories for you and your doll! Once you finished your shopping at the American
Girl store you can head on to the Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue where you can get coffee and
refreshments. It’s a great place to just sit and relax.
St. Patrick’s Cathedral stands tall and proud on Fifth Avenue with its huge stone structure and stone
steps leading up to the big wooden doors. Once you get through the entrance, the first thing you will
notice is how big the Cathedral is. There is a big marble bowl right when you walk in which has Holy
Water for you to use to bless yourself. There are statues of saints all over the Church, including one of
Saint Elizabeth Anne Seton. Even though the Church has plenty of pews, there aren’t enough for all the
people to sit in during Mass. I remember being there for Mass on Good Friday one time and realizing
how lucky we where to have gotten there early and have found seats. The altar is very big and the
pulpit looks over the congregation so that everyone can see the Priest. Behind the altar are more
statues and an entrance to the crypt, which has priests, bishops and cardinals, as well as Venerable Pierre
Toussaint’s body.
Another great thing about New York City is all the different cultures. If you go to China Town all you
see are Chinese market places selling typical Chinese food. There are great restaurants to eat at where
you can try all the typical food. Also, if you decide to take a walk in a park you can be sure to see
people practicing Ta Chi, Kung Fu and Wu Shu, which are types of Chinese Martial arts. Once in a while
you’ll also see someone singing in Chinese. Little Italy is similar to China Town, only everything is Italian!
There are some really great places to eat and the food is delicious. It’s also really nice to walk around at
night and enjoy the sights.

One of the best parts about Little Italy is that every
year in September they hold a huge Italian Festival
also known as the San Gennaro Festival. They close
off a few blocks of Little Italy just for the festival and
have lighted arches at the end of every block. It is
very crowded, but there many great things to see and
do. There are lots of games to play and you can win
prizes. My favorite part is all the great food! They
have so much great food that it is hard to chose what
to get. They also have amazing desserts. They have
chocolate covered strawberries, apple candy, cannolis,
fried dough and so much more. If you’re tired of walking around, they have Churches that you can go into
to rest. One of them is Old Saint Patrick’s Church, not the Cathedral but the original Saint Patrick’s. There
is also the Church of the Most Precious Blood that has a beautiful altar and many beautiful statues. In the
back of the Church, they have little room dedicated to Our Lady Of Lourdes and they have a beautiful
statue of Our Lady standing in a small cave with actual water dripping down and Saint Bernadette
kneeling down next to it. These are both gorgeous Churches to go into and have a quiet moment to pray.
Shrine for Our Lady of Lords in Church of the Most Precious Blood
Rockefeller Center is a great place to visit in the
summer and winter. In the summer they have a beautiful
water fountain with colorful lights and a nice outdoor
café. It’s nice to walk around and maybe get a bite to eat.
Rockefeller Center is probably most known for its
spectacular display at Christmas time. Each year they have
a huge tree standing tall with thousands of lights
covering every inch of it. The star on the top stands 6
feet tall, and in the winter they turn the outdoor café
into an ice skating rink. It’s really nice to see the people
skating and sometimes you see someone doing some
really cool jumps. One time we saw a young man kneel
down on the ice rink and propose to his girlfriend, which was really cool. Going to Rockefeller Center at
Christmas time is a great way to get you in the Christmas spirit.
Another one of my favorite places in New York City is Times Square.
There are so many great things to do, from shopping in the two story
Disney store, the three story Toys R Us, or just walk around and enjoy all
the lights. Times Square is never dark and it honestly always looks like it’s
day time. There are so many light up bill boards advertising that you
never know where to look. Times square is always crowded and I can
only imagine what it’s like on New Year’s Eve. I’ve never been there on
that special night, but I’ve seen it on TV enough to know that there is no
room to walk. One year my family and I were in Times Square the day
before New Year’s Eve and we were fortunate enough to see them test
the countdown and the ball dropping. It was just like being there on
New Year’s Eve only we weren’t in the middle of a huge crowd! Times
Square is also a great place to catch a horse drawn carriage to take you
to some of the famous sights in New York City. Nobody should go to
New York City and not stop in Times Square. It’s absolutely amazing to
see and it’s always lit no matter what time of the night it is! There’s so
much to see and do in New York City that I can’t mention it all, but I’m
so very happy that I’ve been to New York City so many times and I think
everyone should go at least once in their lifetime.

Review of Switchfoot’s Vice Verses
By Jeremy Candelas (See CCMforum.com)
Today I have the pleasure to review what I believe is going to be one of the best – if not the best
– album of the year. The album is 12 tracks long, and a little over 52 minutes in length.
Switchfoot’s “Vice Verses” is an amazing album which features a new sound which Switchfoot
fans are bound to love. Well let’s get going!
The album kicks off with a strong start with the inspiring and crunchy guitar chord driven
song Afterlife. The song puts the listener in a good mood straight away, throwing in their
familiar sound with a bit of newness mixed in. The chorus of the song is incredibly catchy, and
is greatly written. In my opinion, this is one of the best songs off the new album.
Next up is The Original, probably the poppets song off the new album. It is sure to get
fans excited for the rest of the album. I really love the guitar solo on this song, excellent work.
The vocals are great also. Tim’s occasional vocals in the song line up nicely with Jon’s to make
a powerful song.
The War Inside: Although the lyrics may seem repetitive to some, the song is bound to
become one of the most popular simply because it is an anthem song. It’s motivating to the
listener and gives them a burst of energy. The building up in the song musically is really great;
the piano gives the song an amazing sound. It makes the listener think that something is about to
happen. Not sure what it is, but something amazing is about to happen. This is one of my
favorite songs from Switchfoot, and there is no doubt that this will be a huge single if they ever
release it as one (which I'm sure they will).
Restless is the song which Switchfoot sent out to the CCM stations across the nation. It is
an amazingly written song, and is just breathtaking. As usual, Jon Foreman shows off his
sensational poetic writing style. “Running hard for the infinite / With the tears of saints and
hypocrites” Jon cries out, the song displaying his restlessness in searching for God. Yet another
great song.
Up next is Blinding Light, one of the songs exhibiting that new sound we have heard so
much about. The chorus of the song is simply great, as is the instrumental work on the song.
Although I would not consider this to be one of my favorite songs in “Vice Verses,” I think that
this is a great song and I look forward to hearing the rest of the album and its new sound.
Without a doubt Selling The News is different. It is politically incorrect. The vocals are
unlike anything Jon has ever done – Selling The News as Jon said, is the closest to rapping to has
ever done. Any Switchfoot fan will ask themselves “Is this Switchfoot?” The song is entirely
fresh and I really like it. In addition to this, the song is undoubtedly honest and represents the
lack of faith in the modern media. The bridge of the song is my favorite: “Where nothing is
sacred there’s nothing to lose / Where nothing is sacred all is consumed / We’re still on the air it
must be the truth / We’re selling the news.” Jon again astounds us with his amazing vocal and
writing work.
Thrive starts the second half of the album with a more mellow sound, its lyrics continuing to
embody the wanting to live for more in life. “A steering wheel don’t mean you can drive / A
warm body don’t mean I’m alive” Jon sings in the acoustic guitar-driven song. With Thrive,
there honestly isn’t much to say. I mean this in a good way; it is simply a song that you will
have to listen to yourself to understand how great it really is.
The album’s first single, Dark Horses, is up next and it is definitely one of Switchfoot’s best
songs. Although some weren’t quite pleased with the original version, I am sure that they will be
pleased with this one. Inspired by the homeless children of StandUp for Kids, this song makes as an
amazing anthem song for those kids and anyone who is considered a dark horse.
Souvenirs is another gem on this album, especially the chorus in which Jon lets it all loose. The
emotion of the song shines through greatly as Jon sings of the past, his souvenirs. “Nothing lasts
forever,” he cries out as the song reaches its climax. Lyrically speaking, I think this is one of the most
powerful songs on the album. I am surprised this song has yet to receive much attention so far,
although it is hard to tell since the album is still waiting to be released.
Rise Above It continues to grasp the listeners attention. With a catchy chorus and poppy and
energetic sound overall, this song is sure to be another hit off the album. Personally I think it sounds a
bit similar to Selling the News, both in how Jon does vocals and in lyrics. So if you like that track I’m
sure you’ll like this one as well. The bridge of the song, if I had to describe it in just one word, is epic.
The buildup of Jon’s vocals is amazing and the song is quite powerful, especially at this point.
Definitely a song worth getting if you’re not going to get the whole album.
Now we come to the album’s title track Vice Verses. This song is probably my least favorite, but
it is still amazing. The song thoroughly encompasses the meaning of the album as a whole and is
unique in a good way. It’s a rather simple song musically speaking, and it’s almost mesmerizing
really.
Lastly, we have Where I Belong. I really love the intro for this song; the guitars and drums work
extremely well together. The song wraps up the first song on the album, Afterlife, as one can easily see
upon examining the lyrics for both songs. The song has a great sound to it, and I especially love the
chorus and just the lyrics in general. This song puts an amazing end to the album. I couldn’t have
thought of a better song to conclude the album with.
In conclusion, “Vice Verses” is simply an amazing album. I have no doubt that this will become
the band’s best-selling album so far, and could very well be their best-received album yet. This will
definitely be an album that you will want to check out once you can. “Vice Verses” is a huge step
forward for Switchfoot, and I look forward to hearing more from the band in the future. I’m giving
this album a perfect five stars out of five.
Christendom vs. Franciscan
by Joseph Plas
Christendom College and Franciscan University are very different in many ways. First of all, Franciscan
University is much older than Christendom. In the late 1940's, after World War II, Bishop John King Mussio, the newly
installed bishop of Steubenville, saw the need for a Catholic College in that region of Ohio. He first asked the Jesuits,
but would have had to pay $1 million upfront. So he then turned to Franciscans, who not only accepted the challenge of
starting a new college, but offered to provide their own financing. From then until 1974, Franciscan University became
less and less Catholic, until Fr. Michael Scanlan, TOR, became president of the University. He reformed the University
from a very low Catholicism point, to becoming one of the greatest and most authentic Catholic Universities in the
world. Christendom, on the other hand, was founded in 1977 by Dr. Warren Carroll, with a beginning staff and class of
26 students and 5 faculty. Dr. Carroll had wanted to found a Catholic College for years at this point, and finally was able
to found Christendom, after leasing a few buildings in Triangle, Virginia. Also, Christendom, unlike Franciscan
University, has remained authentically Catholic for its whole existence. In 1981, Christendom moved to its permanent
location, Front Royal, where it has grown to over 400 students in the last 28 years.
Both schools have very good reputations for their educational opportunities. Franciscan University has more
degrees available, aside from their liberal arts degrees. Degrees such as Computer Science, Nursing, Sociology,
Catechetics, and more, give more specific degrees for certain fields students may want to go into. Also, professors at
Franciscan University and Christendom are required to take the oath of fidelity to the Pope. Christendom has only liberal
arts degrees, yet they still have educational opportunities outside of the classroom students can be involved with. Both
schools, Franciscan University, and Christendom College, are very good in their high educational standards.
Student Life is very good at both schools, one of the contributing factors which makes future student desire to
attend either schools. At both schools, they have pro-life groups, study groups, sports teams, bands, drama and more. At
Franciscan, because it is much larger, there is a much larger variety of groups a student can join, from exercise, to music,
to educational organizations. During the year, at each schools, there are weekly casual dances, trips, mission trips, and
more. There are many student life organizations students can be involved in at both schools.
Each school, obviously, is very strong and authentically Catholic. Franciscan University has a very big majority
of their kind of Masses, from complete Tridentine Latin Masses, Novus Ordo style Mass, all the way to Contemporary
Masses with guitars and other similar instruments being played. They also have a praise & worship music groups who
play weekly. Christendom, however, is very Traditional, having Tridentine Latin Masses, Novus Ordo, and English
Masses, all with an organ, choir, or no music being played. Both schools greatly vary in their styles of Mass and
worship.
The Onyx Legacy Part 1
By Mara Ng
The sunlight flitted through the blinds of Cassidy‟s window, making a striped pattern all over her room.
The world outside was so calm and peaceful, which was a huge contrast to what was really going on.
Everything in Cassidy‟s room was a mess. The place was totally littered with everything she owned:
clothes, gadgets, books, pencils, paintbrushes, sketchpads, and crumpled paper. Even the only poster
she owned hung crookedly on the wall.
While the room was entirely buried in alternating piles of clothes and crumpled paper, its owner didn‟t
seem to care about the mess at all.
Cassidy was sitting at her desk, munching on a KitKat candy bar thoughtfully. She knew wondering
why her world seemed to spin the other way didn‟t help at all, but she just couldn‟t help herself.
After a moment‟s hesitation, she hurriedly wrote a message on a small piece of paper she acquired
from the chaotic mess on the floor. As soon as she finished writing, she dropped her pen, and threw the
chocolate wrapper into an overflowing trash bin.
That should do it, she thought. All I have to do now is pack.
As the eldest child in the family, she was tasked to write “the note” to her parents. She didn‟t really
know what to write. All she knew was that she had to hurry. And this made her message all the more
awkward.
“Dear Mom,
I can’t explain what’s happening right now
because I promised I wouldn't. We have to leave or else
everyone will be in danger. Don’t worry about me, Kate,
or Nick. We’ll be fine. I promise. I won’t let anything
bad happen to them. I’ll protect them with my life if
that’s what it takes. Well, lock the doors every night.
Watch your back and don’t trust anyone. We’ll miss
you, Dad, Jimmy and Jason. Oh, and I’m taking
Bones with us. He won’t be able to cause you any
problems if he comes along. The three of us have to
disappear for a little while. So we can’t have our
names or pictures put in the newspaper or T.V. or
the internet. See you soon! - Cassidy”
Her letter was longer than she wanted it to be, and she sounded like a total paranoid freak, but she
didn‟t know how to make it any better.
Cassidy glanced at her wall clock. She was running late. Her two younger siblings might even be
finished packing their stuff already. That would be sort of embarrassing.
She ran to her closet and rummaged through a huge pile of clothes until she reached the very bottom.
Then she grabbed her backpack from the pile, and stuffed some of her clothes in it. She flew around
the room, packing other things she thought were useful: Swiss-knife, flashlight, spare batteries, wallet,
with money of course, an I.D., her laptop and her cell phone with their chargers, and other small items,
even a pack of chalk. Not surprisingly, she packed some of her favorite pencils and a sketchpad. She
couldn‟t go anywhere without them.
Cassidy looked through the things in her closet again and grabbed her jacket. She would definitely
need it. She wore her old sneakers and found a baseball cap she bought from the first art museum she
visited. Then, she grabbed her backpack and laptop, and opened her window.
After sticking a foot out of her window, she hesitated. Did she really have to do this? Did she have to
leave the safety of her home, her family, and her whole life just because of a stupid videogame? It
wasn’t fair…but, if she stayed, things could get worse.
She gave herself a few seconds to look at her messy room. She hoped her mom wouldn‟t clean it up
so that when she‟d come back, it would seem as if she never left in the first place.
“That‟s right,” she thought, “I‟m coming back. We’re all coming back.”
Cassidy climbed out of her window and stepped onto the soft grass of their backyard. She walked as
slowly as possible, appreciating the tranquility that nature always seemed to offer in times of difficulty.
But still…
It was happening too fast, she couldn‟t even understand it all. She wished that she never bought her
brother that videogame for his birthday. She thought that gifts were meant to make people happy, but
this one only ended up destroying the lives of three children.
Cassidy smiled. People were right. Videogames were bad for people.
Once she reached the doghouse, she paused. Bones was ready, but where were her siblings? She
shook her head slowly. Even if she was already late, they still weren‟t done. They were supposed to be
finished packing their bags by now. She sighed. That was probably something that she‟d have to deal
with her entire life.
A thump at the other side of the doghouse interrupted Cassidy‟s train of thought. She peeked over the
doghouse and saw her little sister carrying a huge, hot-pink backpack on her left arm and a hot-pink
purse on her right arm.
Cassidy wanted to scream. Kate was dressed like she was going to a Halloween party…as Barbie.
Everything she wore, from her leather boots to her beret, was pink. She even had pink lip-gloss and
pink eye shadow on.
“Kate!” Cassidy nearly shouted. She lowered her voice. “Why are you dressed that way? Do you
want to attract more attention? We‟re in enough trouble already!”
Kate was about to say that at least she looked better than Cassidy, when her older brother suddenly
arrived at their rendezvous point.
“Hey, guys,” he said in a sleepy voice, and yawned. He smiled groggily. “I mean girls. So what do we
do now?”
Cassidy was perplexed. She didn‟t understand why her siblings were always so careless. She
always had to fix everything by herself. “You were playing video games again last night weren‟t you?!”
she asked her younger brother in a furious whisper. “Look at your fingers! They look like little
cherries!”
Nick scratched his head guiltily, and winced. “I couldn‟t sleep so I just—”
There was a loud beep from his backpack. Cassidy glared at him, but he wouldn‟t meet her gaze. He
took his PSP from his bag, and smiled sheepishly.
“Don‟t tell me you brought your stupid game along! It‟s what brought us into all this trouble in the first
place! Never mind. We don‟t have time for this,” she looked at her watch. It was nearly five in the
morning. “We have to go now or we‟ll miss the bus.”
Cassidy took a leash from the side of Bones‟ doghouse, and attached it to his collar. “C‟mon buddie,”
she scratched in his ear. “It‟s time to go.”
The group of four started to walk quietly out of their backyard, with Kate dragging her excessively
huge, annoyingly pink backpack on the ground. Cassidy rolled her eyes, and started to close the gate.
Then Nick accidentally turned up the volume of his PSP.
Cassidy couldn‟t take it anymore. “Okay, why don‟t the two of you just stay here since you obviously
don‟t want to leave?” Cassidy muttered. “I‟m not kidding. If you want to stay, then stay. I‟m only leaving
because I don‟t want Mom and Dad and practically everyone else I know to be in danger like we are
right now.”
Nick mumbled an apology. “Cassidy… You know that we‟re both just not good at this. We don‟t want
anyone else to be in danger, but we‟re just not used to hiding. I mean, Kate has her girly Barbie-like
friends, and I‟ve got my buddies. You, on the other hand, are good at being—well, invisible. You love
being the one who notices things, and NOT the one being noticed. That‟s why you‟re so good at this.
You were already doing this before „you know what‟ happened. So, please just give us a little break.”
She clenched her teeth, sighed, and then shrugged. “That‟s a little insulting, but fine,” Cassidy
answered quietly. “Just follow me and try to do what I do.”
-To Be Continued in Next Month’s Issue
O willow fair! a tree whose heart is broken, whose trunk lies rough and withered from its start; whose drooping, slumping branches bear the token
of silent mourning and a ravaged heart; your life, it seems, is borne by dreams
within your silent skin, and though the yellow sunshine gleams
you let not in its rays.
O silent tree! whose life is but a token of loneliness and grief within this world; whose silence heralds to a lover broken,
and love by undeserved beloveds, purled; each down-turned leaf depicts your grief,
in mourning you remain; and morning's sun gives no relief
to assuage your pain.
your dream forever of a love whose life has forsaken you;
you long for what you think your due and do not seek to look above
but lay with bough and drooping leaf sunk in the ocean of your grief
and floundering in waves of thoughts untrue.
rise up, O silent, broken tree! your heart was made for more than this;
life bears more sweetness than these tears, than weeping and unspoken fears,
and pleas to apathetic ears; these last not for eternity.
life is a cruel taskmaster, and will ever drive your weary hand, but in the end the earth will see love for a weeping willow tree.

This is made just like grilled cheese! What you need: - Bread (tomato basil bread from "Panera Bread" is the best!) - Mozzarella cheese - Butter - Marinara sauce
by Olivia Plas
Put a skillet on the stove at medium heat. While it's heating up, butter two slices of bread, put the pieces of bread on the skillet. Then put the mozzarella cheese on one of the slices and the other slice on top. Cook both sides until golden brown. After it is finished cut the sandwich into strips. We use the strips to dip into the marinara sauce. Servings: As many as you like!

Watching the Sunset
by Luke Williams
The painter of the realm had stroked
his brush across the sky,
the keeper of the sun had stoked
its coals of majesty;
the last notes of the sunset lay,
a vivid melody,
and the glow, although it longed to stay
was fading steadily
I saw among the purple clouds
a gaping opening,
a chasm rent across the crowds
and there unwavering,
resplendent; dark amidst the pink
and purple firmament,
stained by the sun upon the brink,
whose life was nearly spent
I stared in awe at that abyss,
gashed open in the skies,
amidst the sunset's dying bliss
and bright, defying cries;
my eyes turned to that gaping rift,
and my mind began to fly
and muse on how a man might drift
to endless fantasy
O wonder of all wonders! light
stands strong in every age
and springs up from the bitter night
to break free from its cage;
thus so my mind's light swiftly flew
and soared to such degrees
I thought the winds that, my ship, blew,
might never come to cease
I thought of armored, shining knights
on rampant snowy steeds,
and all the hardships and delights
that come from valiant deeds,
and maidens fair, from whom a kiss
is a hero's sweet reward,
and the rising warmth of steady bliss
when friendship is restored
I pondered on expanses cold,
and scattered through with spheres
I thought of this enduring world,
held fast by many fears
I thought upon the unheard cries
resounding on deaf ears,
and songs that faintly, sadly rise
to mix with angels' tears
I wondered at the pride of man,
and how we always say
without considering first; “I can!”
and then fall the next day;
I felt ashamed to think about
how we complain so much,
while there are those who live without,
and do not whine of such
And last, I thought of Him, the One,
the last; but not the least!
and of His glorious victory won,
and of His wedding feast;
and of how green the grass must be
in Heaven's verdant lawns,
and with what shining majesty must break its brilliant dawns.
