The reader is remindedthat all o the terms and descriptions used inthis catalogue as to authorship, period, culture, source or origin or any property are made andused as qualied statements and opinions only, and are subject to the Conditions o Sale and theTerms o Guarantee.

In connection with the attribution o authorship,as described in paragraph 2 o the Terms oGuarantee, the ollowing terms are used in thiscatalogue, and are dened as ollows:

    FURNITURE aNd dECORaTIONS

    REgENCy ROSEwOOd SOFa TablE

First quarter o the 19th century. This headingwith the date included means that the piece is, inour best judgment, o the period indicated withno major alterations or restorations.

    REgENCy ROSEwOOd SOFa TablE

This heading without inclusion o a date indicatesthat in our best judgment, the piece, whilebasically o the period, has been substantiallyaltered or restored and in some cases it may alsoindicate that the piece has been constructed romold parts.

    REgENCy STylE SOFa TablE

The inclusion o the word style in the headingindicates that, in our opinion, the piece is anintentional copy or reproduction o an earlierwork or style o works.

    PaINTINgS

    NICOlaES MaES

In our best judgment the work is by the namedartist. This is our highest category o authenticityin the present catalogue.

    aTTRIbUTEd TO NICOlaES MaES

In our best judgment, while the work is o theperiod o the named artist, and on the basis ostyle can be ascribed to him, we cannot state withcertainty that it is by him.

    SChOOl OF NICOlaES MaES

In our best judgment, the work is o the period othe named artist, by a pupil or close ollower othe artist, but is not by the artist.

    CIRClE OF NICOlaES MaES

In our best judgment, the work is o the period othe named artist and closely related to his style.

MaNNER OF NICOlaES MaES OR aFTER

NICOlaES MaES OR FOllOwER OFNICOlaES MaES

In our best judgment, although the work is in thestyle o or a copy o a work by the named artist, itis o a later period.

    SIgNEd NICOlaES MaES

In our best judgment, the signature, monogram, initials or other similar indicia o authorship is arecognized signature o the artist and appears inone o the six areas o the painting designated asollows:

    (u.l.) Upper let(l.l.) Lower let(u.r.) Upper right(l.r.) Lower right(u.c.) Upper center(l.c.) Lower center

    bEaRS SIgNaTURE, NICOlaES MaES

In our best judgment, the signature, monogram, initials or other similar indicia o authorship is notthat o the artist and may have been added at alater date.

In our best judgment, the date indicated on thework is the date the work was executed.

In our best judgment, the date indicated whenthe original model was executed. Since the exactdate o the casting o a bronze sculpture is otenunknown and illustrationsin reerence books may not speciy whichparticular cast is discussed or illustrated, it shouldbe pointed out that dates o execution andentries listed under Literature in theindividual catalogue entries do not necessarilyreer to the castings included in the sale.
