Working from an intuitive base, yet informed by years of experimentation as a painter, knowledgeculled from widespread readings, and the immediacy of the unpredictable experiences that characterizepost-Katrina New Orleans, Doyle Gertjejansen has produced a series of highly energized paintings that areimbued with gritty pictorial muscle and expressive of timely metaphors. Having long ago adopted thebelief that there is essentially one pictorial language—which is inclusive of abstract and representationalas well as familiar and unfamiliar imagery—Gertjejansen begins each painting with a simple, arbitraryconfiguration and then, additively, transforms it into something compelling and meaningful. InGertjejansen’s hands, a serene appropriation of Mount Fuji becomes engulfed by the centrifugal motionof swirling brush gestures that hurl through space like fragments of ripped-apart earth ignited by anexplosion. Similarly, disks of a color wheel struggle to be perceived from within a densely populated fieldof compacted undulating abstract organisms. Though never literal in a narrative sense, the paintingsconvey a metaphoric outcry about struggle for survival, bringing to mind not only the upheavals of a citymutated by the shock of Katrina, but of the multiple instabilities—political as well as environmental—thathave thus far defined the initial decade of the twenty-first century.
