About Downtown IncDowntown Inc represents the interests of property owners, mer-chants and residents in the revitalization and beautification of the core 26 blocks of York City.

The “go-to” organization for all things downtown, Downtown Inc focuses on making downtown York a great place to live, work, shop and dine. The organization is recognized across the Com-monwealth as a model Main Street program, winning awards and recognition from state and national trade associations.

Downtown Inc’s areas of focus, as consistent with the four points of Main Street, include economic development, physical appear-ance, promotions, marketing, safety and administration.

Downtowns Matter• A downtown is home to locally owned, independent businesses that keep 68% of their revenue recycling back into the community.

• A healthy downtown enhances property values and expands the City’s tax base.

• A vibrant downtown creates a sense of place and pride for the community.

• Downtowns can serve as an incubator—for new, small, and locally owned businesses.

• A downtown serves as a community space where members of all segments of the community can come together for parades and other community events.

• The downtown is usually home to a community’s arts and cultural offerings—which also act as an economic driver and catalyst for business development.

You knoW about First Fridays in downtown York…but what about Fifth Fridays?

New for 2016: the York City Independent Restaurant Association is bringing you Fifth Friday, a night to toast to the weekend in downtown York.

During the months that have five Fridays in 2016—April 29, July 29, September 30, December 30—five downtown bars will offer $5 bar menus and fun drink specials.

“Fifth Fridays should feel like a party in downtown York,” says Philip Given, Fifth Friday organizer. “It’s a night specifically fo-cused on good food and drink and an excuse to come downtown—as if you needed one.”

The first Fifth Friday kicked off on January 29, 2016. Downtown revelers en-joyed bar specials like $5 crispy crab balls with Sriracha aioli and $5 Nashville hot chicken with shaved pickles at The Left Bank Restaurant and Bar; $5 sweet & sassy wings at Holy Hound Taproom; $5 sliders at Mudhook Brewing Co., made with Pepper’s Grille pulled pork on York City Pretzel Company rolls; and ended the evening on a sweet note with $5 red velvet cake at Otto’s Kitchen & Cocktails. Drink specials that night included $5 Grape Bombs at White Rose Bar & Grill and $5 martinis, daiquiris, old fashioneds, and Manhattans at Otto’s.

Box Lunch Revue in Cherry LaneThe popular Box lunch revue concert series returns to downtown York on Tuesday, May 3. The Central York Middle School and High School Jazz Ensembles will open the season.

Each Tuesday and Thursday, May through August, enjoy free mu-sical entertainment in Downtown York’s Cherry Lane courtyard from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Many musical genres are represented, including: jazz, folk, indie, country, classic hits, Celtic, Hawaiian, blues, cigar box guitar, and more.

This year’s schedule includes musicians from throughout Pennsyl-vania and Maryland, and as far away as Arizona, New Hampshire, and New Jersey. During the entire month of May, York County school bands will be the featured performers.

Many favorites from past seasons will be returning. New perform-ers to the series include Weary Arts Group, Mylea Thompson, Parker James Hooker, Soji, Poorhouse Yard, Mickey Spain (of the internationally-touring group Makem and Spain), and Haley Richardson, who will be accompanied by her brother, Dylan. Haley Richardson, age 13, is an award-winning Irish fiddler. She is the 2015 Junior Fiddler of Dooney, two-time All-Ireland Under 12 champion, four-time All-Ireland place winner, and seven-time Mid-Atlantic Regional fiddle champion.

In the event of inclement weather, most performances will be moved indoors to the nearby Central Market House; updates will be shared via social media and by recorded message at 849-2217.

For a complete entertainment schedule, please visit www.yorkcity.org/BoxLunchRevue. Social media users can enjoy features on many of the upcoming performers by Liking York City Special Events on Facebook or following @YorkCityEvents on Twitter. White Rose Community Television will be filming many of the performances for broadcast on WRCT throughout the summer, with live-streaming available on WRCT.tv.

York College's first class of Graham Innovation Scholars developedand presented to community leaders innovative ideas for improvingthe customer experience at Central Market in Downtown York.

The 41sT annual Olde York Street Fair will be held in downtown York, in and around Continental Square, on Sunday, May 8, 2016, from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. All are invited to attend this free event. More than 100 arts and craft vendors will feature handmade gift items for sale. Food vendors will sell traditional American festival food as well as origi-nal creations. All food vendors donate a portion of their sales to area non-profit organizations. A Kid’s Fun Block will feature a variety of inflatables, carnival games, face painting, and other entertainment. Ticket sales for the inflatables in the Kid’s Fun Block will support York City Special Events. Ento-mologist Ryan Bridge (The Bug Man) will once again have his vast collection on dis-play for kids of all ages to see and touch! Four stages near Continental Square will feature live entertainment in a variety of genres, and strolling entertainers will de-light festival-goers. Several tented “rest stop seating” areas will be located throughout the street fair for the convenience of guests.

New for 2016: York City Special Events will be partnering with the York County Library System’s Summer Reading Club kickoff. Watch for details on special events that are being planned as part of this celebration, including special dance performances by Illstyle & Peace Produc-tions, the 2013 US Culture Ambassadors picked by the State Department. These dancers have toured Russia, Belarus, and the Ukraine, and the City of York is pleased to have the group at the street fair this year.

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive in conjunction with the Olde York Street Fair on Sunday, May 8 (11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.), outside the Historical Society Museum in the 200 block of East Market Street. About an hour is all it takes to make a blood donation; in that time, you can help save three lives! To schedule your appointment, please call 800-RED-CROSS or visit www.redcross.org and select Donate Blood. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments take precedence. The Olde York Street Fair runs 12:30 to 6 p.m., so there’s still plenty of time to enjoy all of the day’s events! Bonus: The first 25 blood donors will receive a $10 gift certificate to Central Family Restaurant. Eight area artists are partnering with downtown York retailers to create immersive art installations that incorporate three-dimen-sional objects and design elements, bringing the art and fashion to life. When you enter the event, you become a part of the living, breathing masterpiece that is Spring Forward. It’s art meets fashion meets party, and it’s a night you won’t soon forget.

This year’s Spring Forward gala happens to fall on the blue moon, Friday, May 20. The term has traditionally referred to an “extra” moon, where a year which normally has 12 moons has 13 instead. The “blue moon” reference is applied to the third moon in a season with four moons.

Not only will the “blue moon” theme permeate the event, Blue Moon Brewing Co. will be hosting a fun photo booth and the Blue Moon will be flowing all night long, courtesy of The Beer Ace. Refreshments and catered food will be provided before and after the presentation, courtesy of The JDK Group.

All proceeds from this exclusive event will directly benefit The Parliament Arts Organization, which advances social & economic revitalization of York by providing professional development and event programming for creatives and cultural venues.

Small businesses across the nation will be celebrated for the impact and significance they provide to their communities during National Small Business Week this May. This year, National Small Business Week runs from May 1 – 7, with the theme “Dream Big, Start Small.” Much like Small Business Saturday every November, this event shines a spotlight on local businesses like the ones here in downtown York.

Celebrate National Small Business Week in downtown York by visiting our downtown districts: the Market District, the WeCo neighborhood and Royal Square District, to say hello to and sup-port our downtown business owners. More than half of Ameri-cans either own or work for a small business, and small businesses create about two out of every three new jobs in the United States each year. As part of National Small Business Week, Downtown Inc takes the opportunity to highlight the significance that these businesses and their owners and employees have on our down-town community.

Our small business owners in downtown York create rich, diverse and enticing Main Streets and city blocks. Whether you’re strolling through Penn Farmers Market in WeCo or dining al fresco at Tu-toni’s on North George Street, you know that it’s the small busi-nesses in downtown York that give our town our unique character.

By supporting local businesses, you help to support the com-munity you live in. For every $100 that you spend at a small business, $45 stays locally here in our town. To our downtown business owners, thank you. To our community members who support our downtown businesses during National Small Business Week and every week of the year, thank you. For more informa-tion on our downtown businesses and National Small Business Week in downtown York, follow Downtown Inc on Facebook: www.facebook.com/DowntownYorkPA.

As the temperatures rise, cool down with the York Symphony Orchestra’s water-inspired performance, “All Rivers Run to the Sea.” The final show of the 2015-2016 season is a landmark celebration commemorating the 200th anniversary of The York Water Company. This exciting show will feature Ralph Vaughan Wil-liams’ epic Symphony No. 1 “A Sea Symphony” with special appearances by the York Symphony Chorus and outstanding guest soloists.

A message from musical director, Lawrence Golan:Thanks to the support of the York community, we have had a hugely successful season celebrating the beauty of nature through music. It’s quite fitting to conclude the season by celebrating York’s heritage with this musical and visual journey down some of the most beautiful rivers in the world.

As this series comes to a close, we are enthusiastically looking ahead to next season which will be unlike any before. We invite the community to take A Musical Journey Through Time—an artistic voyage high-lighting some of the most memorable pieces in music history.

Next season will feature iconic selections such as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, and welcome back many world-renowned performers, and local favorites. Of course, our 2016-2017 season wouldn’t be complete without everyone’s favorite Pops Series and Holiday Spectacular that will have you singing along. Join us for the excitement as we celebrate the last show of the 2015-2016 season, “All Rivers Run to the Sea,” and prepare to launch into next season! The York Symphony Orchestra will present “All Rivers Run to the Sea” Saturday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in York. Pigs on Penn Bacon Festival

“This liTTle piggY WenT To markeT…” You’ll be in hog heaven at the historic Penn Market for the 2nd annual Pigs on Penn Bacon Festival, Saturday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the event is free. Food purchases are a la carte.

Bacon makes everything better! We treasure bacon in all of its forms and in every preparation. Sure, we have preferences – some like it baked or fried, some like it smoked, and some like it cured. But we reject nothing at first taste. Regardless of your preferred method of indulgence, we can agree that bacon has the power to enhance any flavor it encounters! Pigs on Penn is a bacon lover’s dream come true as we host a bounty of food trucks and vendors.

Promoting the popularity of bacon, Pigs on Penn will include activities for all ages. Opening with a Blessing of the Bacon, the event will feature kid-friendly events, learning activities, and contests for adults. Do you have the best Pig Call? Come prove it in a friendly competition! Or, you can nominate your friends for the title of Bacon King or Queen. Our porcine royalty will then preside in York’s Halloween Parade as the Bacon King and Queen of York.

Pigs on Penn runs concurrently with Penn Market hours. The market is proud to be celebrating 150 years of operation, making it the oldest contin-uously-operating market in historic York. Penn Market will be offering local produce, cheeses, meats, and more, as well as everything bacon.

Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates, and start preparing for a day of basking in bacon bliss! www.facebook.com/FarmersMarketCompanyYorkPa

Yorkers are welcome to stop by these installations and post a photo sharing what they wish the vacant space would become using the hashtag #PopUpYork on social media to let the world know.

Through partnering with property owners and artists, The Parliament Arts Organization aims to take over main street vacant store fronts in downtown York with elaborate art installations. Allowing residents to see potential in abandoned spaces, and artists a three-dimensional canvas in the public eye, this project directly serves the residents and artists of downtown York.

“We want to fuel the city of York’s revitalization through our programs, services and events,” says Executive Director of The Parliament, Alexandra Dwyer. “We really try to be innovative and progressive.”

There are currently five #PopUpYork installations in downtown York. For locations, visit www.parliamentyork.org.

#PopUpYork marries public art with city planning and is inspired by Candy Chang’s “I Wish This Was” Project from New Orleans, LA. The galleries are made possible by a grant from the York County Community Foundation.

The York County Heritage Trust was a pioneer in 1997 when the organization’s first Microbrew Fest was held. In the early years, only a few small breweries dotted the South Central Pa. region, and the event was novel in its concept. Over time, this major fundraiser grew in size and popularity as craft brewing overspread the area and beer festivals became commonplace.

History Untapped is Unique Among BrewfestsSaturday, June 11, 2016Agricultural & Industrial Museum Do you enjoy great beer, great food, and local history? History Untapped is the brewfest for you.

Page 23: Downtown York Spring/Summer 2016

downtownyorkpa.com 23

The festival’s locale, the Trust’s Agricultural & Industrial Museum, was unique and fit the farming roots of craft brewing. The site’s gritty vibe and outdoor spaces had great appeal, paired with live music and a chance to taste many brews in one evening. During the next decade, event attendance regularly exceeded 1,000 people. But while funds raised were at their peak, the museum and its artifacts started to be at risk. Something needed to change.

Desiring to continue the long tradition of the event, organizers retooled and rebranded it in 2014 to stand out from other similar events. Dubbed History Untapped: An Artisan Beer Affair, the new model is designed to offer a more intimate experience with a focus on beer-and-food pairings. Only 400 tickets are sold, pro-viding attendees an opportunity to converse with the brewers and restaurateurs and enjoy more “elbow room.” Each craft beer is paired with a food tasting, putting the spotlight on the complex-ities of the beers and their best culinary matches.

The “arrival” of beer as a capable partner to food is partly due to its flavor variety. Beermakers can experiment with barley, hops, and yeast, as well as spices, fruits, and vegetables, resulting in end-less combinations. And like wine pairings, there are many schools of thought. Among them are light dishes with light beers and heavy dishes with heavy beers; sweet brews with salty foods; bub-bles with fatty ones, and on and on!

Above all, most brewers will agree: drink what you like, and ex-periment! If you love pale ale, you’ll probably like it with anything you eat. This philosophy is in keeping with the casual spirit of History Untapped; experience York County history in the galler-ies and outdoor spaces of the museum; taste and enjoy the best offerings of our breweries, restaurants, and caterers; and support the mission of the York County Heritage Trust.

This year’s edition of History Untapped will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2016. For ticket information, visit www.yorkheritage.org.

First FridaysEveryone is invited to attend First Friday in downtown York when stores, restaurants, galleries and pubs offer extended hours and specials from 5-9pm on the First Friday of every month.

Presented by WellSpan Health, First Friday is a celebration of downtown shops, eateries, cultural venues and nightlife hotspots. More than 60 downtown shops and restaurants host special events, offer refreshments and promotions, and sponsor live entertainment.

First Friday events began in 2005 and are organized by Downtown Inc, the nonprofit charged with promoting York City's core business district.

"They've been growing exponentially since then," says Mea-gan Feeser, Downtown Inc's marketing director.

From WeCo to the Market District to Royal Square, thou-sands of visitors to downtown fill the streets, shops and restaurants, participating in the monthly themed activities, enjoying complimentary beer samples from The Beer Ace and Brewery Products and celebrating all that downtown York has to offer.

Parking is free in York City after 5pm at both parking meters and the three York City garages, making it easy and convenient to join in the First Friday revelry.

First Friday-goers are invited to participate in the fun on social media as well, posting photos and videos with the hashtag #FFYork.
