AROUND THE CITYAROUND THE CITY20 Years of Electronic Music Festivals at Historical Museum
For 20 years, electronic music fans from around the world have flocked to Detroit at the end of May for one of the biggest urban parties on the planet. What began as a loose and free celebration has evolved into a professionally produced, internationally known event.
Even though the live festival was paused this year, the Detroit Historical Museum is hosting a photog-raphy exhibition highlighting the 20th Anniversary of the festival, curated by Detroit EDM insiders Rita Sayegh and Tim Price.
The exhibition 2000/2020: Celebrating 20 Years of the Electronic Music Festival in Detroit is now open in the Robert and Mary Ann Bury Community Gallery and will run through next years’ festival in 2021.
In addition to framed photographs featuring all as-pects of the festival experience, the exhibit will in-clude a living wall of fan photos from the festival’s 20 years with the names of fans who contributed them. Information about contributing photos is at bit.ly/31VXi5V.
A virtual exhibit will accompany the physical exhibition, making it accessible to fans across the globe. Tracy Irwin, Detroit Historical Society Chief Exhibitions and Enrichment Officer and one of Crain’s Detroit’s 2020 Notable Women in Design, was the lead designer of the exhibition and worked with Sayegh and Price.
“We really wanted to tell this story from the point of view of the people who make Detroit’s festi-vals so dynamic,” Irwin said.
The Detroit Historical Museum is currently open to the public Thurs. – Sat. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sun 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. with enhanced health and safety measures. 2000/2020: Celebrating 20 Years of the Electronic Music Festival in Detroit exhibition is included with general admission.
For information on the Detroit Historical Society, historical content and available virtual tours and exhibits see detroithistorical.org. The Detroit Historical Museum is located at 5401 Woodward Ave. (NW corner of Kirby) in Midtown Detroit.

Every year, my small veg-etable garden produces far more tomatoes than I can possibly use. As the season wanes, an abundance of green tomatoes forlornly hang on the vine looking for enough sun to turn them into red jewels. I've begun searching for unique ways to use green tomatoes as a vegetable and as a fruit in my recipes.Scientifically, tomatoes
are classified as a fruit, but since they don't contain the sweet flavor of most fruits and are typically used in sa-vory dishes, they're legally classified as a vegetable.Tomatoes are low in calo-
ries and a good source of vitamins C, A and K. They also are a very good source of molybdenum, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, chromium and vitamin B-1. In addition, tomatoes con-tain lycopene, which has antioxidant and cancer-pre-venting properties. My recipe for Green To-
mato and Orange Relish uses green tomatoes like a pickled vegetable. It freezes well, and makes a delicious change from traditional cranberry relish for holiday meals. The spices and flavors of
my Green Tomato Spice Cake act as a showcase for the tomato's fruit-like qual-ities. Whether you decide to use your abundance of green tomatoes like a vege-table or a fruit, you can't go wrong with these recipes!
GREEN TOMATO AND ORANGE RELISH
4 medium green tomatoes 1 large purple or Vidalia
onion 1 cup orange marmalade 2 cups dark brown sugar 1/2 cup apple cider vin-
egar 1/8 teaspoon red pepper
flakes
1. Core the bottom of the green tomatoes and cut them into quarters. Peel the onion and cut it into quar-ters. Using a food processor, pulse the green tomato and onion 8 to 10 times, until the pieces become small ("pickle-relish" size). Do not puree.2. Using a 4-quart, heavy-
bottomed pot, put in all the ingredients at once. Cook over low heat for 15 min-utes, stirring until blended and the sugar begins to dis-solve.3. Turn the heat to medium
and cook for 30 to 40 min-utes, stirring occasionally. The relish should be syrupy and slightly thick. If it does not seem to have thickened enough, cook the relish 10 minutes more.4. Cool for 2 hours, and then
put the relish in an air-tight container and refrigerate it. The relish can be refrigerat-ed for two weeks. You also can place the cooled relish
into plastic zip-lock stor-age bags and freeze for up to 6 months. Makes 5 cups of relish.
GREEN TOMATO SPICE CAKE
1 box spice cake mix1 1/4 cups water1/3 cup vegetable oil3 eggs 2 tablespoons light brown
sugar3 tablespoons all-purpose
flour1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup pecans or walnuts,
chopped 1 cup raisins (or dried
cranberries, craisins or cur-rants)1 1/2 cups diced green to-
matoes 1 large, peeled and diced,
Granny Smith apple (about 3/4 to 1 cup)3/4 cup powdered sugar1 cup sweetened coconut,
toasted, optionalWhipped cream, optional1. Heat oven to 350 F.2. In mixing bowl, lightly
beat the water, vegetable oil, eggs and brown sugar until combined, about 2 minutes. Stir in the spice cake mix and flour, and mix until smooth. Stir in the vanilla, pecans or walnuts, raisins, tomatoes and ap-ples. Blend well. 3. Spoon the batter into a
greased and floured 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or un-til a wooden pick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Loosen the cake from the sides of the pan with a knife or spatula. Cool for 30 minutes.4. Using a fine-mesh
strainer or a sifter, sprin-kle the top with powdered sugar. When serving, top each slice with a tablespoon of coconut and/or whipped cream, if desired.

and anyone else to enjoy the flowers.” Seniors Day was co-sponsored by Detroit Area Agency on Aging and Beau-mont Hospital. Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) are local ag-ing programs that provide in-formation and services on a range of assistance for older adults and those who care for them. And by the way, what do they
do on a Cut Flower Farm? One of the things they do
is to get the community in-volved. Volunteers are welcome.
They also keep the neigh-borhood beautiful. Detroit Abloom is all about flowers, and is also part of the Com-munity Support of Agricul-ture. Find out how you can get
fresh beautiful flowers deliv-ered to your home every week during the flower season. Mark your calendar for
next year. You don’t want to miss Senior Day at Detroit Abloom.Located at 248 Manistique

east side boasts more than 160 acres of waterfront parks, boat launches, fishing access and outdoor recreation op-portunities. The canal com-munities of Harbor Island, Klenk Island and Fox Creek are well-kept, one of the city’s hidden gems. Once you leave busy Jeffer-
son Ave. and arrive at Detroit Abloom, it’s as if you’ve driv-en to the country. It’s quiet, it’s peaceful and the smell of fresh flowers is fantastic. It’s really a surprise to find tranquility right off East Jef-ferson Ave. “This is all God’s Handiwork,” comments Tom Milano. I was 22 years old when I left Long Island, New York to become a science teacher.” Tom had no idea he would
end up growing flowers. This past Saturday was Se-
niors Day at Detroit Abloom. “We’re trying to get more community people active”, said Helen Love with Detroit Area Agency on Aging. “We want to become an intergen-erational event…Bring your mother, your grandmother
This past weekend I had the pleasure and delight to visit a Cut Flower Farm right in the heart of Detroit. Located where you would least expect to find a Cut Flower Farm, on Manistique street in the Jef-ferson—Chalmers area, De-troit Abloom is the only Cut Flower Farm of its kind in the area. If you love flowers, you’ll love visiting Detroit Abloom. “We grow over 150 kinds
of plants, mostly from seeds, said Director Tom Milano. Nancy (Tom’s partner) care-fully chooses plant varieties suitable for her floral work and spends a good deal of time researching and experi-menting how to perfect her plant care skills.”Tom is extremely proud of
the nine lots they were able to acquire in the thriving Jef-ferson -Chalmers area that are now overflowing with exotic plants and flowers, a newly finished Pavilion, which Tom pointed out to me was where he and Nancy recently got married, a small pond with a man-made wa-terfall, and a Butterfly Nurs-ery (populations of pollinat-ing insects are on the decline due mainly to habitat loss).By the end of the first year,
Detroit Abloom had fulfilled the expectations of their grant. “The success of De-troit Abloom exceeded ex-pectations,” says Tom. “And we’ve expanded by special-izing in flower arrangements for weddings and events, selling live plants, giving presentations and providing consultation services.”For those of you that are not
familiar with this area, the Jefferson–Chalmers Historic Business District is a historic district located on East Jef-ferson Avenue between East-lawn Street and Alter Road in Detroit. The Covid-19 era is still here. We are all trying our best to continue our lifestyles in any way possible. Streaming has become our mode of communication and we have found that the quality of most performances has been im-pressive, even though there is no substitute for live events.
The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival has taken place, but one can still listen to the recordings. The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra is providing concerts by streaming through Kerrytown House. Kerrytown House has recently done a streaming of William Bolcom and Jane Morris, which left me in a moment of nostalgia and yearning for some past experiences.
The DSO is beginning to streamline group performances featuring its new music director Jader Bignamini. Most of the DSO streamings (pic-tured) have shown the orchestra from a position that is above the players, such that one can see every performer with clarity.
On Thursday, October 1 at 7:30 p.m., James Feddeck will be conducting “a little night music” in a pair of serenades. One of these pays tribute to Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki, who passed earlier this year. The other is Mo-zart’s Serenade No. 6, known as the Serenata notturna.
On Friday, October 2, 7:30 p.m., Jean-Yves Thibaudet, a world class pianist who has performed with the DSO on previous occasions, returns to Orchestra Hall to join DSO musicians for a special performance of César Franck’s Piano Quintet in F Minor. On Thursday, October 15 at 7:30 p.m., DSO musicians will be performing Beethoven’s Septet for winds and strings, which was composed a few years before the First Symphony.
The DCWS’ latest Nightnotes was exceptional with a shorter program. A successful question and answer session followed. The chatlines of Bravo were overwhelming. The program included pieces by Italian composer Giulio Bric-cialdi and was performed by DCWS flutist Amanda Blaikie with pianist Rudolf Ozolins. The next Virtual Nightnotes will take place on Friday, October 9. DCWS bassoonist Marcus Schoon will be performing with guitarist Al Ayoub.
Chamber Soloists of Detroit is offering their first streamed concert of the 2020-2021 season on Thursday, October 1st. They are featuring violinist Sibbi Bernhardsson and pianist Pauline Martin in recital. The concert is free and can be accessed on October 1 as well as afterwards. The program includes Scherzo by Johannes Brahms, Sonata No. 10 in G major, op. 96 by Beethoven, 2 Nocturnes by Thorkell Sigurbjornsson, Sonatina in D major, D. 384 by Franz Schubert, and Tzigane by Maurice Ravel.
Last, but certainly not least. UMS is alive and well and is submitting exceptional musical and dance performances as well as informative study sessions with top artists. More on this in the next issue.
I suggest that those who want to stay abreast of events in classical music, should explore the Facebook announce-ments of the respective performing groups.

Treating a Scratch Under a Dog's FurDEAR PAW'S CORNER: I took my Springer Spaniel, "Rog," for a
walk in the woods this morning. When we got back, I noticed he was trying to lick a spot behind his shoulder. I found a thin scratch on his skin. I dabbed it with some antibacterial ointment, but that's about it. Will he be OK? -- Jessica in Jaffrey, New Hampshire
DEAR JESSICA: As long as the wound seems to be healing, Rog should be fine. Check the area once a day and reapply antibacte-rial ointment. If it begins to appear puffy and red, or Rog seems very distressed by it, take him to the vet for further evaluation.
Most minor scratches on a dog's skin and paws can be treated at home using the household first-aid kit. You also can build a pet first-aid kit that is easy to access when you walk into the house. In addition to antibacterial ointment (avoid products with hy-drocortisone), it should have antiseptic solution, water-based lubricant like KY (not Vaseline), clean towels, an empty squeeze bottle (like a ketchup bottle), tick-removal tweezers, a muzzle, small scissors and a disposable razor to gently remove fur. (Elec-tric clippers are an even safer option.)
To treat a small scratch or cut, fill the squeeze bottle with luke-warm water. Hold your dog securely, placing a muzzle on him to prevent bites if he gets agitated. Trim or shave away hair from the area. Gently clean the wound using the squeeze bottle of wa-ter. Pat dry. Dab the antiseptic onto the wound, then apply an-tibiotic ointment. Cover lightly with a bandage if possible; oth-erwise, prevent your dog from licking away the ointment for at least 10 minutes. Check and reapply ointment daily as it heals.
