Downton Diamond Jubilee CelebrationForeword
Today we celebrate the 60 years that Her Majesty the Queen has been on the throne. The Queen is only the second monarch in history to reign as Sovereign for six decades – a span of time that has seen quite remarkable social change and development.
As the whole country joins together this weekend in celebrating a life dedicated to service, once again Downton flies its flag high in presenting a day of celebrations that is both a fitting and joyful tribute to the occasion.
I would like to thank everyone who has put in so much hard work to make this event happen: the organisers, the helpers, the Committee, the sponsors and donors and all others who have made such a valuable contribution to its success.
In her Jubilee message the Queen writes, “I hope we will all be reminded of the power of togetherness and the convening strength of family, friendship and good neighbourliness, examples of which I have been fortunate to see throughout my reign”. Today we are certainly reminded of that.
On behalf of The Downton Diamond Jubilee Committee, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our day of celebration.
God Save the Queen.

As part of the national Jubilee celebrations, over 4000 Beacons will be lit throughout the country culminating with the Queen lighting hers in Central London at 10.30pm. We will therefore in Downton be lighting our Millennium Beacon. The beacon will be lit by Malcolm Dean as a thank you for all his hard work in initiating and organising the village festivities on Saturday 2nd June.
Please meet at the Beacon site on the corner of Moot Lane and Lode Hill, Downton at 8pm where there will be music and jollity until the beacon is lit at around 9pm. Please bring your own chairs and refreshments.
We look forward to seeing you there.

(These are approximate timings)
Martin & Pat
Martin Sutcliffe and Pat McHale, together, form the formidable duo of … “Martin & Pat”! Through their set, “Reeling in the years”, they deliver an eclectic mix of hits from the decades of Her Majesty’s reign. Anyone familiar with Radio 1’s live lounge will not want to miss this acoustic based performance.
Music In The Park 5.30pm - 7.30pm
Identity Crisis
Identity Crisis are a young rock band who have been playing together for three years. The band most enjoy performing live and recently won a “battle of the bands” competition in North Wiltshire. The band consists off Gus White (lead singer and guitarist), Lawrence Hannaford (drums), Matt Fowler (lead guitar) and James Winkley (bass) and, for this event, all the songs they are playing have been written by themselves. This is the band’s first time in Downton and they hope to help make it an enjoyable evening for all.
Just Us
Just Us is a nine-piece band playing the Soul sounds of the Sixties, with all the energy and enthusiasm that makes Soul music such an exciting and unforgettable musical experience. With a driving four-piece rhythm section and a big four-piece brass section fronted by the voice of an experienced and exciting Soul singer, Just Us has a great stage presentation and an unmistakable musical style. For those who love soulful numbers such as James Brown’s ‘I Feel Good’, Arthur Conley’s ‘Sweet Soul Music’, and Otis Redding’s ‘I Can’t Turn You Loose’, Just Us is a band that pulls out all the stops and creates a really exciting and energetic sound.
- 7 -
Roger Curley
Roger is a superb harmonica player with many years experience of playing with dance bands and orchestras, and also of performing as a soloist, both in this country and across the continent. You will soon find yourself singing along to the many well known songs that he plays with great feeling.

We wish the friends of Downton good health and happiness throughout the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
Something that will interest everyone is a flying display of a World War II aircraft. During the evening you can expect an exciting and spectacular flying display of a 1943 Harvard.
The North American Harvard during the Second World War was the Advanced trainer for fighter and bomber pilots. Fitted with bombs and/or machine guns it was used to train gunnery and aiming skills.
A World War Two pilot would progress from a basic trainer such as the Tiger Moth to then fly the complex Harvard in preparation for their first flight in the single seat fighters like the Spitfire and the Hurricane.
Designed and initially made only in America, it was supplied to the RAF and the Allied Forces from 1939 before the Americans entered the war, under the Land Lease arrangement. A time when we did not have our own Advanced Trainer. In fact throughout the war we did not manufacture any trainer versions of the Spitfire or Hurricane. The small number of two seater Spitfires that were produced were converted from single seaters after the war.
The aircraft you will see was manufactured in 1943 and served initially in the RAF before being transferred to the Royal Netherlands Air Force where she served her last military duties.
In civil hands she started a Display flying career in 1969 based in the Netherlands and by the 1970’s was based in the UK.
In more recent times, some of you who attend Air shows may remember her, when owned and displayed by pop star Gary Numan during the 80’s and the early 90’s.
Gary is a very competent and experienced Pilot and was well respected for his Air show flying as well as a singer and song writer and widely
Harvard Aerial Display 7.45pm
“The Harvard will perform loops and rolls... promising a spectactular display”
known for his song ‘Cars’.
The aircraft was then painted in the colours of a Japanese Zero fighter and appeared in a number of films as well as at Air shows across the UK and Europe.
These days ‘Sierra Charlie’ as she is known is painted in the colours of the American Air force and belongs to Lord March’s Goodwood Empire and working a living promoting the Goodwood Aero Club and provides a remarkable opportunity to those who dream of flying in a world War Two fighter.
If you share the same dream you can take a thrilling ride in this very special aircraft. Operating out of Goodwood airfield near Chichester - flights can be taken from about £200.
The display will be flown by Air show Pilot Peter Borchert. Peter is well known on the display circuit having started display flying nearly ten years ago with the Yakovlevs four aircraft aerobatic team. Flying close formation aerobatics in the Russian Yak 50.
A private pilot, Peter has over a thousand hours in aerobatics and display flying. Qualified to advanced level in formation and aerobatic display flying, some of you may have seen Peter’s smoke trailing aerobatic displays in the high powered America Biplane the Pitts Special. Based locally at Old Sarum he has entertained crowds at local events as well as the major Air shows.
Flying a Harvard display is quite different from the high-energy aircraft such as the Pitts Special. The pre war technology does not allow the aircraft to fly upside down, accept in positive ‘G’.
The Harvard will perform loops and rolls and I am sure you will agree that in the right hands the spectacle and the noise of this 600hp aircraft makes a stunning display.

Ivy was living in Chertsey, Surrey. She recalled the weather to be fine for their street party. They had their milk delivered by horse and cart and much of Chertsey were still using horses for deliveries. Most things were still rationed but everybody chipped in for the party.
Stella was living in the U.S.A. in South Carolina and believes she saw the Coronation on television.
John was living in Dagenham on a council estate with his wife and daughter. The estate had a street party, rations were shared out for it and he remembers the day as being very nice.
Cherry was in London. She remembers a party, but most of all that every theatre was closed for the day. Her parents worked in the theatre, and even in London horse and cart deliveries were still relied on.
Chris was living in Salisbury; he doesn’t remember much about the Coronation but remembers the King dying very clearly, with all the pubs, clubs and shops shutting for the day of the funeral as a mark of respect.
Florence was living in Swanage, with her girls at the Grammar School. She remembers a street party.
Peggy, Mary and Norman were living in Downton. Peggy had just moved there but she went back to Charlton All Saints for a street party.
Norman’s parents owned a shop (it is now the Cottage Loaf). It was a general store, selling everything from paraffin to pegs. Norman and his wife ran the shop.
Downton Friendship Club reminisce about
Coronation DayMary was in her 20’s and also remembers everything being delivered by horse and cart, and that was by Wally Copp. Downton had a bank, bike shop and of course a railway station.
All three remember horse and cart removal men, coal men and a rag and bone man. Shops included chemist, butcher, shoe repairs and the Co-op.
All the clients think petrol was 2/6 (12p) a gallon and the bus fare to Salisbury was 3d.
Alice and Jessie both lived in Redlynch. They also remember that rationing was still in place and that Alice’s brother Wally did the milk round. Alice’s family had a farm and she remembers animals being wiped out with Swine Fever. They remember that Redlynch had a celebration on the day.

This poster belongs to the Blackwell family from Downton and is believed to be the only one in existence.
On Tuesday 21st June 1887, Downton celebrated Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee - the fiftieth anniversary of her accession to the throne.
Just like today, residents of Downton and nearby villages would have gathered together to celebrate the Jubilee with food, drink, music and merriment.
- 39 -
AND FINALLY….From Malcolm Dean, Fund-raiser/Co-ordinator for the Downton Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, who was born and raised in Downton.
This will be my final fund-raising event for the village as it is becoming ever harder to organise things, due to the red tape that is involved.
The current celebrations started out as a low-key event with an estimated cost of £14,000. This has since risen to £20,000, which has been raised through various fund-raising events over the previous two years.
None of this would have been possible without the support that I have been given and thanks are due.
I would personally like to thank Hilary Mace who, as Event Secretary, has given 110% into this, my final event.
My thanks also go to:
Bryan Morris who, as Chairman, has marshalled the ‘troops’ with military style; Debbie Stelling who has designed and produced all publicity materials; Peter Pleydell-Bouverie who has acted as our President once again and Keith Sutcliffe, his deputy; Isabel Griscti, Treasurer; Roger Stickley who has worked tirelessly to provide the props; Andy Smith, who stepped into the role of Stage Manager supported by a team of Jeff Joseph, Dave Goddard, Ian MacDonald, Jeremy Parsons, Sue Stanley and Lesley Bates; the concert team led by Jane Seden (Artistic Director), Peter Seden, Liz Weager and Kate Edgar (musical directors) and Sarah Collins; Sue Stickley and Sally Sutcliffe who have designed and made the costumes; the street party organisers, Sally Brown and her team of helpers; Janice Noble and John Targett, carnival; plus all the people who will be acting as marshalls and security on the day.
Signing off...
Malcolm Deanp.s. my thanks also to everyone in the village who has supported me in this and previous events.
Malcolm aged 7
