Themonistictheoryoftheuniverse—thetheorythatOneisAll,andthatAllisOne;thatoneSubstancemanifestsitselfastheseemingmanyelementsofthematerialworld—is ofHindu origin, and has been graduallywinning itsway into the thought of thewesternworld for two hundred years. It is thefoundation of all the Oriental philosophies, and of those of Descartes,Spinoza,Leibnitz,Schopenhauer,Hegel, andEmerson.

CHAPTERII.THEREISASCIENCEOFGETTINGRICH.

There isaScienceofgettingrich, and it isanexactscience, likealgebraorarithmetic. There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiringriches;oncetheselawsarelearnedandobeyedbyanyman, hewillgetrichwithmathematicalcertainty.

Theownershipofmoneyandpropertycomesasaresultofdoingthingsinacertainway;thosewhodothingsinthisCertainWay,whetheronpurposeoraccidentally,getrich;whilethosewhodonotdothingsinthisCertainWay,nomatterhowhardtheyworkorhowabletheyare,remainpoor.

Itisanaturallawthatlikecausesalwaysproducelikeeffects;and,therefore,anymanorwomanwholearnstodothingsinthisCertainWaywillinfalliblygetrich.

Thattheabovestatementistrueisshownbythefollowingfacts:—

Getting rich isnotamatterofenvironment, for, if itwere, all thepeople incertainneighborhoodswouldbecomewealthy; thepeopleofonecitywouldallberich, whilethoseofothertownswouldallbepoor;ortheinhabitantsofonestatewouldrollinwealth, whilethoseofanadjoiningstatewouldbeinpoverty.

But everywhere we see rich and poor living side by side, in the sameenvironment, andoftenengagedinthesamevocations.Whentwomenareinthesamelocality, andinthesamebusiness, andonegetsrichwhiletheotherremains poor, it shows that getting rich is not, primarily, a matter ofenvironment. Some environments may be more favorable than others, butwhen twomen in thesamebusinessare in thesameneighborhood, andonegets rich while the other fails, it indicates that getting rich is the result ofdoingthingsinaCertainWay.

Andfurther, theability todothings in thisCertainWayisnotduesolely tothepossessionoftalent, formanypeoplewhohavegreattalentremainpoor, whileotherswhohaveverylittletalentgetrich.

Studyingthepeoplewhohavegotrich, wefindthattheyareanaveragelotinall respects, having no greater talents and abilities than other men. It isevidentthattheydonotgetrichbecausetheypossesstalentsandabilitiesthatothermenhavenot, butbecausetheyhappentodothingsinaCertainWay.

Getting rich is not the result of saving, or “thrift”; many very penuriouspeoplearepoor, whilefreespendersoftengetrich.

Norisgettingrichduetodoingthingswhichothersfailtodo;fortwomeninthesamebusinessoftendoalmostexactlythesamethings,andonegetsrichwhiletheotherremainspoororbecomesabankrupt.

Fromallthesethings,wemustcometotheconclusionthatgettingrichistheresultofdoingthingsinaCertainWay.

IfgettingrichistheresultofdoingthingsinaCertainWay,andiflikecausesalways produce like effects, then anymanorwomanwho can do things inthatwaycanbecomerich, andthewholematterisbroughtwithinthedomainofexactscience.

The question arises here, whether thisCertainWaymay not be so difficultthatonlyafewmayfollowit.Thiscannotbetrue,aswehaveseen,sofarasnaturalabilityisconcerned.Talentedpeoplegetrich,andblockheadsgetrich;intellectually brilliant people get rich, and very stupid people get rich;physicallystrongpeoplegetrich, andweakandsicklypeoplegetrich.

Somedegreeofabilitytothinkandunderstandis, ofcourse, essential;butinso far as natural ability is concerned, any man or woman who has senseenoughtoreadandunderstandthesewordscancertainlygetrich.

Also, wehaveseenthatitisnotamatterofenvironment.Locationcountsforsomething; one would not go to the heart of the Sahara and expect to dosuccessfulbusiness.

Gettingrichinvolvesthenecessityofdealingwithmen, andofbeingwheretherearepeople todealwith;and if thesepeopleare inclined todeal in theway you want to deal, so much the better. But that is about as far asenvironmentgoes.

Ifanybodyelseinyourtowncangetrich,socanyou;andifanybodyelseinyourstatecangetrich,socanyou.

Again, it isnotamatterofchoosingsomeparticularbusinessorprofession.People get rich in every business, and in every profession;while their nextdoorneighborsinthesamevocationremaininpoverty.

It is true that youwill do best in a businesswhich you like, andwhich iscongenial toyou;and ifyouhavecertain talentswhicharewelldeveloped, youwilldobestinabusinesswhichcallsfortheexerciseofthosetalents.

Also, youwilldobest inabusinesswhichissuitedtoyourlocality;anice-cream parlor would do better in a warm climate than in Greenland, and asalmon fisherywill succeed better in theNorthwest than in Florida, where

But,asidefromthesegeneral limitations, gettingrichisnotdependentuponyour engaging in some particular business, but upon your learning to dothingsinaCertainWay.Ifyouarenowinbusiness,andanybodyelseinyourlocalityisgettingrichinthesamebusiness,whileyouarenotgettingrich,itisbecauseyouarenotdoingthingsinthesameWaythattheotherpersonisdoingthem.

No one is prevented from getting rich by lack of capital. Noman is kept poor because opportunity has been taken away from him;because other people have monopolized the wealth, and have put a fencearoundit.Youmaybeshutofffromengaginginbusinessincertainlines,butthereareotherchannelsopentoyou.Probablyitwouldbehardforyoutogetcontrol of any of the great railroad systems; that field is pretty wellmonopolized.Buttheelectricrailwaybusinessisstillinitsinfancy, andoffersplentyofscopeforenterprise;anditwillbebutaveryfewyearsuntiltrafficandtransportationthroughtheairwillbecomeagreatindustry, andinallitsbranches will give employment to hundreds of thousands, and perhaps tomillions,ofpeople.Whynotturnyourattentiontothedevelopmentofaerialtransportation,insteadofcompetingwithJ.J.Hillandothersforachanceinthesteamrailwayworld?

At different periods the tide of opportunity sets in different directions, according to the needs of the Whole, and the particular stage of socialevolutionwhichhasbeenreached.Atpresent,inAmerica, itissettingtowardagriculture and the allied industries and professions. To-day, opportunity isopenbeforethefarmerinhislinemorethanbeforethefactoryworkerinhisline. It is openbefore thebusinessmanwho supplies the farmermore thanbefore theonewhosupplies thefactoryworker;andbefore theprofessionalman who waits upon the farmer more than before the one who serves theworkingclass.

The visible supply is practically inexhaustible; and theinvisiblesupplyreallyISinexhaustible.

Everything you see on earth is made from one original substance, out ofwhichallthingsproceed.

Nature is an inexhaustible storehouse of riches; the supply will never runshort. Original Substance is alive with creative energy, and is constantlyproducingmore forms. When the supply of buildingmaterial is exhausted, more will be produced; when the soil is exhausted so that foodstuffs and

TheFormless Stuff is intelligent; it is stuffwhich thinks. It is alive, and isalwaysimpelledtowardmorelife.

It is the natural and inherent impulse of life to seek to livemore; it is thenatureofintelligencetoenlargeitself, andofconsciousnesstoseektoextendits boundaries and find fuller expression. The universe of forms has beenmade by Formless Living Substance, throwing itself into form in order toexpressitselfmorefully.

The universe is a great Living Presence, alwaysmoving inherently towardmorelifeandfullerfunctioning.

Nature is formed for the advancement of life; its impelling motive is theincreaseoflife.Forthiscause, everythingwhichcanpossiblyministertolifeis bountifully provided; there can be no lack unless God is to contradicthimselfandnullifyhisownworks.

Thought is the only power which can produce tangible riches from theFormlessSubstance.Thestufffromwhichallthingsaremadeisasubstancewhichthinks,andathoughtofforminthissubstanceproducestheform.

OriginalSubstancemovesaccordingtoitsthoughts;everyformandprocessyouseeinnatureisthevisibleexpressionofathoughtinOriginalSubstance. As theFormlessStuff thinksof a form, it takes that form; as it thinksof amotion,itmakesthatmotion.Thatisthewayallthingswerecreated.Weliveinathoughtworld,whichispartofathoughtuniverse.

ThethoughtofamovinguniverseextendedthroughoutFormlessSubstance, and theThinking Stuffmoving according to that thought, took the form ofsystems of planets, and maintains that form. Thinking Substance takes theformofitsthought, andmovesaccordingtothethought.Holdingtheideaofacircling system of suns and worlds, it takes the form of these bodies, andmoves them as it thinks. Thinking the form of a slow-growing oak tree, itmovesaccordingly, andproducesthetree, thoughcenturiesmayberequiredtodothework.Increating, theFormlessseemstomoveaccordingtothelinesofmotion it has established; the thought of an oak tree does not cause theinstant formationof a full-grown tree, but it does start inmotion the forceswhichwillproducethetree, alongestablishedlinesofgrowth.

Everythoughtofform, heldinthinkingSubstance, causesthecreationoftheform, but always, or at least generally, along lines of growth and actionalreadyestablished.

The thoughtof ahouseof a certainconstruction, if itwere impresseduponFormlessSubstance, mightnotcausetheinstantformationofthehouse;butitwould cause the turning of creative energies already working in trade andcommerceintosuchchannelsastoresultinthespeedybuildingofthehouse. And if there were no existing channels through which the creative energycouldwork, thenthehousewouldbeformeddirectlyfromprimalsubstance, withoutwaitingfortheslowprocessesoftheorganicandinorganicworld.

First,we assert that there is one original formless stuff, or substance, fromwhichallthingsaremade.Alltheseeminglymanyelementsarebutdifferentpresentations of one element; all the many forms found in organic andinorganicnaturearebutdifferentshapes, madefromthesamestuff.Andthisstuff is thinkingstuff;a thoughtheldinitproducestheformofthethought.Thought, in thinking substance, produces shapes.Man is a thinking center, capableoforiginal thought; ifmancancommunicatehis thought tooriginalthinking substance, he can cause the creation, or formation, of the thing hethinksabout.Tosummarizethis:—

There is a thinking stuff fromwhich all things aremade, andwhich, in itsoriginalstate, permeates, penetrates, andfillstheinterspacesoftheuniverse.

Man can form things in his thought, and, by impressing his thought uponformlesssubstance, cancausethethinghethinksabouttobecreated.

It may be asked if I can prove these statements; and without going intodetails,IanswerthatIcandoso, bothbylogicandexperience.

Reasoning back from the phenomena of form and thought, I come to oneoriginal thinking substance; and reasoning forward from this thinkingsubstance, I come to man’s power to cause the formation of the thing hethinksabout.

Aman’swayof doing things is the direct result of thewayhe thinks aboutthings.

Todo things in thewayyouwant todo them, youwillhave toacquire theabilitytothinkthewayyouwanttothink;thisisthefirststeptowardgettingrich.

To think what you want to think is to think TRUTH, regardless ofappearances.

Everymanhasthenaturalandinherentpowertothinkwhathewantstothink, butitrequiresfarmoreefforttodosothanitdoestothinkthethoughtswhicharesuggestedbyappearances. To thinkaccording toappearances iseasy; tothink truth regardless of appearances is laborious, and requires theexpenditure of more power than any other work man is called upon toperform.

There is no labor from which most people shrink as they do from that ofsustainedandconsecutivethought;itisthehardestworkintheworld.Thisisespeciallytruewhentruthiscontrarytoappearances.Everyappearanceinthevisible world tends to produce a corresponding form in the mind whichobserves it; and this can only be prevented by holding the thought of theTRUTH.
