Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) is a vibrant 11-18 all-inclusive secondary school and sixth form located on Lewes Road in Brighton, a short walk from American Express Community Stadium and the University of Brighton. The academy provides students with a stimulating and progressive education which is rich, varied and full of exciting opportunities.
The academy’s Vision is to be: “a high-achieving Academy of globally and socially aware students with the creative skill to innovate, and the confidence to succeed in an ever-changing technological world”, and aims to: “give students the chance to unlock and maximise their potential in order to shape their own futures”.
The school’s highly impressive, ultra modern buildings were completed in September 2011 and designed by London architects Feilden Clegg Bradley. Facilities include a Learning Resource Centre, cutting-edge ICT resources, sound-proof music booths, a drama studio, business pods, a vocational area for catering and other work experience activities, a Swan Centre for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder or speech and language needs, and a sixth form study area.
The school features high-quality leisure facilities, including extensive playing fields, a six-court sports hall, two all-weather pitches, an outdoor multi-use games area, a fully equipped dance studio and a gym. BACA also has outstanding green credentials, with
the building featuring a whole host of sustainable eco-friendly elements, such as solar panels, a grass roof, rainwater harvesting, allotments, storm-water attenuation, natural ventilation, a biomass boiler and greywater reclamation systems, as well as 22 bat boxes and 150 bird boxes.
Staff at the academy believe that anything is possible and encourage students to adopt an entrepreneurial ethos, which can be witnessed in the Team Academy programme – an innovative approach to education founded in Finland with the belief that learning is more likely to stick when it’s paired with real-world practical actions. BACA students were the first ‘Teampreneurs’ in secondary education to pioneer the programme in the UK.
The academy strives for both technological and sporting excellence in an attempt to ensure students achieve success in the 21st century. The Sir Rod Aldridge Cricket Centre is home to the Aldridge Cricket Academy, which enables students to develop their cricketing talent while promoting and maintaining fitness, and the team toured South Africa in 2015.
