5Location & Getting there
Basel at the heart of Europe
A city with history.
Basel can look back on over 2 000 years of history. And today, it is as present as ever. Its history is alive, offering an exhilarating contrast to the modernity in every corner of the city.
In bygone timesEven before our era, the Celts settled in Basel. The strategic location drew the Romans to station their armies on the Münster Hill in 30 B.C. After this, events in the middle ages left their impression on the city, in particular that of the Church Council and the founding of Switzerland’s first university in 1460. In Er-asmus of Rotterdam’s time, this city of humanists was a centre of book printing and paper production. The reformation then brought silk weaving and dying, which preceded the pharma-ceutical and chemical companies.
NowToday, this once fortified settlement is a centre for life sciences, as well as for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, and also has important companies in the logistics, transport and financial field. Additionally, Basel is the most important location for trade fairs and congresses in Switzerland, and, with its 200,000 inhabitants, one of the cities with the highest quality of life worldwide.

Beautiful moments guaranteed.
You don’t need to search for the sights in Basel. As you wander through the city, you will find them with every step you take. Whether you are in the picturesque Old Town or in the midst of world class architecture – the city offers something for every taste.
The Rhine – our life lineIf you visit Basel, you won’t be able to avoid the Rhine. Espe-cially in the warm months, the banks of the river tempt you to sunbathe and relax, to rest or to swim. From the Kleinbasel Rhine side, you will have a unique panoramic view of the Gross- basel district with the Cathedral and Pfalz, of the Mittlere Brücke, the four ferries, picturesque half-timbered houses and baroque residences. You can let your eyes wander from various viewpoints, enjoy refreshment in numerous restaurants and cafes, or just sit in the sun by the river and become part of the picture.

Between tradition and modernityTravel through all the eras of time: in hardly any other city do 15th century buildings complement internationally renowned modern architecture to create such a dynamic yet harmonious cityscape. The narrow alleyways and hidden squares with over 180 fountains as well as the many century-old buildings and eye-catching sights such as the City Hall or the Cathedral com-bine to make Basel's Old Town one of the most beautiful and intact of its kind in Europe.

Simultaneously, the city welcomes modernity with open arms. As home of Herzog & de Meuron, Basel has created a stir in the world of architecture. Numerous other world-famous celebrities in this field have enriched the city with their works, thus ce-menting its reputation as a centre for contemporary architecture. The city oscillates between the inheritance of its history and the beat of the present. Tradition and modernity are more than slogans here, they are a living reality.

Cathedral and PfalzBasel’s landmark must be the Cathedral. This former Episcopal Church was built between the 12th and the 15th century in romanesque and gothic style. Today, the square around the church is a meeting place and is often used for events. From the observation platform, known as the “Pfalz”, you can enjoy a spectacular view overlooking the Rhine, the Kleinbasel district, the Black Forest and the Vosges.

City HallThe City Hall is the seat of the Basel government and its parliament. In the midst of the Old Town, it is particularly eye-catching with its red facade, the characteristic tower and playful frescoes. The oldest part of this imposing structure was built in the years between 1504 and 1514. In the centre court, you will find the statue of Munatius Plancus, the founder of the first Roman settlement in the Basel region. Basel Tourism offers regular tours through this historical building.
FerriesA trip on one of the four ferries across the Rhine is not to be missed. Traditionally one calls the “Fährimaa” with a bell from the landingstage. Experience how time seems to stand still during the short crossing. With-out sound, driven solely by the current, the ferries will take you to the other side of the river throughout the whole year.
Tinguely FountainIn summer, it cheerfully shovels water, in winter, an enchanting ice sculpture: the unique fountain designed by the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely attracts tourists as well as passers-by, strollers, and Basel inhabitants wishing to enjoy their lunch break outside. With its central location in the city centre, it is the best starting point for a tour of the outdoor works of art of Basel.

40 Museums. And that’s not all, by any means.
In Basel you will find art in numerous muse-ums and in many other locations through-out the city. You will also experience a great deal of culture otherwise as well.
40 Museums from historical to contemporaryNearly 40 museums with world renowned exhibitions – this is unique in Switzerland and top class by international standards. With various themed areas, our museums offer something for every taste, and some have even written history. For example, the Museum für Gegenwartskunst was the first of its kind. And the Kunstmuseum Basel is regarded as one of the oldest public art collections in the world.
Open Air ArtWhether you wander through the alleyways of the Old Town or take a break on a park bench – art is everywhere. Serra, Borof-ski, Rodin or Niki de Saint Phalle are only a few names of the artists who have contributed to sculpting the cityscape with their works of art.
Detailed information on Basel’s cultural offer can be found at the Tourist Information offices of Basel Tourism.

When culture comes to lifeDid you know that Basel is one of the few cities with a world-class orchestra of its own? The Basel Symphony Orchestra plays regularly at the Stadt-Casino. Moreover, the city on the Rhine offers a wide range of cultural events. This also includes music festivals, such as BScene, which puts the spotlight on the local band scene once a year.

Normal houses are world class architecture here.
Basel’s importance in the world of archi-tecture can be seen in the fact that around one third of the Pritzker Prize holders has built here. At the same time, the city is a creative hotbed for young designers.
Architectural eye-catchersBasel is not only home to the architectural duo Herzog & de Meuron. Besides 15th century buildings there are numerous key contemporary works – and the number is continuously increasing.
Design with tradition and futureThe Basel School of Design set trends in co-founding the world-famous “Swiss Style”. What began then has become tradition. Until this day, Basel is the birthplace of many labels and in-novative designs.
The brochure “Architecture in Basel” offers a good overview of modern architecture in Basel.

Welcoming the modernIf you are looking for architectural highlights, you are looking in the right place in Basel. Richard Meier, Frank O. Gehry and Mario Botta have built here, and they are in the company of numerous famous colleagues. And who knows? You might even bump into Jacques Herzog or Pierre de Meuron on the street or in a cafe.
Birthplace of landmarksBasel is developing fast. Throughout the city, an impressive dynamism is palpable. The planning and realisation of architec-tural projects are practically carried out on a day-to-day basis. If you haven’t been in Basel for a while, it could be that you are in for a surprise.
Architecture and design - hand in handIn terms of design, there are lots of new developments too. A successful example can be found in the North Basel district: as part of creating the new motorway tunnel, a whole city quarter was redesigned. Or in the “Stellwerk” located in the newly reno- vated St. Johann station: its internal design workshop offers young designers their own platform. This is because funding design is just as important as city development in Basel. Initiatives such as the annual Design Market in September produce a creative climate which the whole city profits from.

Basel exhibition centreThe city's most recent landmark is the new exhibition centre. The cen- tral architectural urban feature of the new hall complex, developed by Herzog & de Meuron, is the City Lounge. This covered, public space not only marks the entrance to the exhibitions, but also functions as a meeting place for locals and visitors.

Vitra Campus (G)The Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein (G) is not only a pleasure due to its large collection of design classics. On the grounds of this museum stands the first building by Frank O. Gehry in Europe and Zaha Hadid’s first ever. The institution has existed since 1989 and has since attained international renown. A visit is a must for every lover of design and archi- tecture, not least thanks to the VitraHaus by Herzog & de Meuron with the “Vitra Home Collection”.
LothringerplatzThe Lothringerplatz is a good example of Basel’s orientation towards the future. The motorway tunnel of the north tangent runs under this square, and due to the construction of this tunnel, the whole area was redesigned. On the square itself, buildings by Buchner Bründler, Christ & Gantenbein and Heinrich Degelo face one another, thereby offering a cross-section of the current Basel architectural scene.
Novartis CampusThe campus located at the Novartis headquarters has already become a true Mecca for modern architecture. The planning was conducted by the famous Italian architect Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani. Every buil-ding on the campus was designed by a different architect. There are buildings by Frank O. Gehry, Diener & Diener, Sanaa and many more; the realisation of this “city in a city” is still in progress. Every two weeks, Basel Tourism offers guided tours of the campus.

Savoir Vivre is written large here.
Leisure and relaxation are very important values in Basel. This is reflected in the friendly, open, and warm nature of Basel’s inhabitants.
The Rhine in the centreThe river divides Basel in two. Or better said, it connects the two halves of the city. As the most-visited local recreation area, it has a special importance in the daily lives of the people of Basel. Whether going for a walk, a beer after work, a barbeque evening or an afternoon swim in the summer – the Rhine is a source of wellbeing and relaxation.
Swimming in the RhineOn warm summer evenings, you can see lots of people swim-ming in the Rhine. Take a dip in the cool waters and pay attention to the information boards along the banks of the Rhine, providing you with useful tips. Only those who have enjoyed this extraordinary leisure experience will understand why the Mediterranean seems so close.
The Basel “Wickelfisch” – a watertight bathing sack which makes it possible to keep your clothes dry while swimming – can be purchased at our Tourist Information offices.

With its art nouveau pavilion it is a welcome green zone, which is often frequented by the inhabitants of Basel, espe- cially at noon. In the Café zum Kuss, you can eat lunch and dinner and enjoy culture at the same time, especially during the Sunday culture brunch.
BadhysliIf you wish to swim in the Rhine, you can go to a “Badhysli”, as the bath houses on the banks of the Rhine are affectionately referred to by the people of Basel. One is near the Johanniterbrücke, the other in the Breite quarter. In the Badhysli you can relax on the sun decks to experience a perfect holiday atmosphere.

31Eating & Going out
Bar Rouge G329
Star chefs in their spheres of actionThe Basel region is no longer a secret tip for gourmets; here you will find over 20 restaurants which have been awarded GaultMillau points or Michelin stars. For example, in the restaurant Cheval Blanc, Peter Knogl, “Cook of the Year 2011” will be there to spoil you. In the previous year, Tanja Grandits from the restaurant Stucki was named “Newcomer of the Year”.
Guild restaurant
BarfüsserplatzA good starting point for night owls is the Barfüsserplatz with the traditional pub Zum Braunen Mutz, the legendary Rio Bar and the state of the art restaurant Kohlmanns. The nearby Steinenvorstadt offers a complete selection of cinemas and bars.
Traditional guild halls and in-placesA particularly special highlight of the Basel gastronomy scene are the guild restaurants. Here, centuries of history meet culinary pleasure. And several of the latest places to open in Basel are proof that our city always has room for new ideas. For example the Hitzberger Restaurant, a fast food restaurant managed by a star chef. Or the new Volkshaus, which combines a restaurant and a cultural house.

Also in the quar-ters outside the city centre, you will find fantastic bargains in the design shops and galleries, for example at the Vogesenplatz or in the Feldbergstrasse. Large shopping centres, such as Rail-City in the Swiss Railway Station SBB which is open on Sundays too, offer immense variety.

More events than days in a year.
In fact, it doesn’t really matter when you are in Basel, there are unique events through- out the year.
There’s always something on in BaselThe largest carnival in Switzerland, the most important art fair in the world, a renowned ATP tournament, a fun fair with a his-tory of more than 550 years and much more. Basel’s events can often only be described in superlatives. Throughout the year, there are numerous special highlights. And Basel calls itself “Switzer-land’s football capital”, nearly no other club has such frenetic fans. Actually, you should just stay in Basel for 365 days, because the choice is really not easy. Here you will find an overview of the most important events. So you will know what’s on and you can plan for it.

Carnival in BaselThe Basel Fasnacht begins on Monday after Ash Wednesday and means three days of outrageous fun. The “Drey scheenschte Dääg” (“the three most beautiful days”), as it’s known amongst the people of Basel, are a unique experience for visitors too. About 20,000 of Basel’s inhabitants march through the streets playing musical instruments, accompanied by beautiful lanterns. If you wish to get to know Basel, you mustn’t miss the Fasnacht.

Art BaselArt Basel is the largest and most important fair for modern and con-temporary art. Every year in June, art collectors and lovers meet here from all over the world. Nearly 300 selected galleries make the fair the most important temporary museum.
Basel TattooAfter the Edinburgh Tattoo, the Basel Tattoo is the second largest military music festival in the world. Formations travel here from all over the world and present their precise choreographies each July. And be aware: the Basel Tattoo sells out a few hours after ticket sales begin. Remember the date and be prepared.
Swiss Indoors BaselBasel is the home town of Roger Federer. The tennis star therefore makes sure to take part in the Swiss Indoors as often as possible along with many other top shots. Discover Basel. It is not easy to describe Basel in one word. Titles such as “Cultural capital of Switzerland” or “University town” can only be understood as attempts to encompass the rich variety of cultural, historical, leisure and enjoyable experiences under one heading. Whether it’s a swim in the Rhine, an evening at the Schauspielhaus, or a ship excursion into Roman times, let the following pages inspire you with what awaits you in Basel. We wish you a great stay!
