Reaching out globally
As the economy globalizes, the need for translation has increased. Companies that boast an international presence need websites that address local markets in their own
languages. Consumer products need to come with translated documents for an
optimal user experience. Internally, or-ganizations need to communicate in a
language that their employees feel comfortable with.
Translation is often seen as a cost. But view it, instead, as an
investment in better customer service or better internal
communications. For some organizations however, engaging a
translator to translate each and every line of text is too big a cost to contemplate. This is
where machine translation comes in.
When is machine translation applicable?
Large volumes for immediate release with little or no budget
From ‘no translation’ to machine translation: machine translation can make translation affordable when there is no budget for high-quality human translation. Frequently asked questions (FAQs) are important elements to enhance the user experience of consumer electronics or domestic appliances. Using internal or external translators can get quite expensive. A combination of machine translation and human post-editing ensures a lower cost and a shorter time to market, while maintaining a consistent level of quality i.e. uniform terminology and adherence to the corporate house style.
Internal communications
Organizations produce enormous quantities of information that only have value when accessible to all stakeholders. Examples are feedback from customers in their own language or internal memos between different departments. In many cases, these documents are not translated because the cost involved is prohibitive, and the important information in them remains unused. Machine translation can provide a low-cost alternative, ensuring that all information is shared internally and delivering value to the organization.
Instant communications or Multilingual Chat
Global corporations work with employees who do not always speak the same language. Language barriers can prevent a good under-standing of email messages, internal support documentation, messages between production sites and sales offices, etc. To cope with this, in-stant, automated translation can improve com-prehension between the parties concerned. This eliminates the necessity to hire technical experts for every language used within the company. Employees can now communicate directly and without delay, allowing them to re-solve issues faster.
Refining techniquesThere are many good reasons to opt for
machine translation. However, there is no single solution to fit all needs for fast, low-cost and high-quality translation. Over the years a number of systems have been developed to automate the translation process. Techniques that are constantly being refined.
Rule-based machine translation uses a set of grammatical, linguistic and terminological rules. The quality of the output can easily be improved by adding dictionaries with new terminology.
Statistical machine translation is generated by statistical models, based on the analysis of bilingual texts provided by the customer (corpus). The corpus is dynamic: as more translations are made, the corpus grows, further reducing cost and increasing trans-lation accuracy and consistency.
Hybrid machine translation uses the strong points of rule-based and statistical machine translation, by combining grammatical, linguistic and terminological rules with statistical analysis of bilingual data. This ‘best of both worlds’ approach effectively combines statistical and rule-based translation.

Honda uses Y-MTHonda Motor Europe Limited uses Y-MT for two different projects. Yamagata Europe gets a daily stream of data about warranty claims that have been entered into the Honda service databases in the local language of the dealers. This information is automatically translated into English and transferred back to Honda via web services. This way, QA engineers get valuable feedback in a timely fashion. In the second project, Y-MT ensures instant translation of technical chat sessions between local dealers and the central Honda technical support centre.
