In today’s highly competitive business arena, proactive managers require strategic know-how and informed decision-making when deploying staff. To support the success of their operations – both current and future – an analysis of workforce composition metrics is an essential tool. Understanding the demographics of the current workforce by career level and by function provides the necessary data to fill any skill or headcount gaps in the employee population going forward.
For example, a workforce composition metrics analysis enables managers to have an answer to the following questions:
•Do we need to hire more employees in a specific function or in a specific career level?
•Do we have too many employees in a specific function or in a specific career level?
•How many people are necessary to manage our finance department?
•How does our staffing situation compare to those of our peers?
With Mercer’s company versus market report, managers can identify areas where their organisation’s workforce composition significantly differs from that of relevant comparison groups.
NOTE“N” indicates the number of observations in each entry. This number varies from topic to topic, depending on the number of companies that deliver data for each item.
READING THE REPORTThis report provides four types of analysis: general productivity level of the workforce, workforce composition by career level, by function and by employment type. For the analysis of the workforce by career level and by function, two different types of indicators are provided: the percentage (breakdown) of employees by career level and by function, and the number of employees or full-time equivalents (FTEs) supported by an employee in a career level or in a function.
Your company results are indicated in each of the tables and can be systematically compared to the market. The notion of market can be considered at different levels: country, industry, revenue size and company size.
Each section is always organised in the same way: The first table provides results for the entire country sample with a set of different measures (average, median, quartiles); other tables that follow allow a deeper analysis, on an average basis, by industry, by revenue size and by company size. The general productivity level by industry, by revenue size and by company size is given in more detail with all measures’ types (average, median, quartiles). The last table of each section provides a resume comparing your company with your country sample, as well as with your specific markets (your industry, your revenue size and your organisation size).

GENERAL PRODUCTIVITY LEVELThe general productivity level of a company can be measured by the revenue per full-time equivalent (FTE). Calculated with the division of the revenue by the total permanent FTEs, the revenue per FTE (also known as the “human capital revenue factor”) measures the organisation’s top-line financial productivity and quantifies the value of the workforce as a revenue generator.
The revenue per FTE for the entire sample, on average, is 450 thousand euros (0.45 million euros). For example, it means that 100 FTEs generate 45 million euros.
