Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Where pensions once seemed as American as apple pie, the word is now frequently uttered in the same breath as “critical,” “declining,” and “insolvent.” Pension trustees all around the country are being forced to perform balancing acts to minimize inevitable pension cuts. It’s a new reality we are living in.
As chairman of the ILPF, I want to thank the over 75% of retired and active participants who voted for supporting the necessary changes that were required to put the fund in the green zone again. Our work is far from finished. The trustees have already, with the assistance of our new consulting firm, re-evaluated our present investments. We are doing the best we can, and we will get through this. We will continue charging forward. Together. That is the essence of a union: strength in numbers. It’s what we do best.
As difficult a decision as it was to make, what comes out of this decision is that we have saved our fund from total insolvency. Now, with realistic assumptions, we will continue to receive a monthly benefit.
While this has been a very difficult year in many ways, celebrating the holidays with family, friends, and loved ones is what will recharge us and enable us to prevail. There is nothing stronger in our lives than family.

EASTERN STATES CONFERENCERETURNSAfter a one-year hiatus to give priority to last year’s GCC/IBT international convention, the North American Eastern Conference returned to Harrah’s in Atlantic City, NJ, this year and was better than ever. During the three-day event in April, speakers Larry Mitchell of the Inter-Local Pension Fund and GCC organizer Rick Putman made presentations, among others. Information about grievance, arbitration and federal mediation and contract updates was also offered. “We’ve heard from locals all over the country about the anticipated return of this conference,” says conference president Patrick LoPresti. “Attendees come from states along the coast between Maine and Florida and as far out as Ohio. They look forward to it every year.”

We recently heard from Emanuel Lieberman, one of the oldest living members of Local One-L. Brother Emanuel turned 99 years old on April 7, 2017. He has been a member since 1950, when he worked at Schonbar Leigh Printing Co. on Varick Street in NYC. Emanuel wishes everyone a great year ahead. LOPRESTI RECIPIENT OF SAMUEL GOMPERS AWARD
President Patrick LoPresti is one of 16 individuals and one apprentice class who in early October received the prestigious 2 0 1 7 S a m u e l G o m p e r s Distinguished Services Award. The annual award is given by the Central New York Labor Council in recognition of “those qualities of leadership that have kept the Union movement strong.” LoPresti, who started working in the lithographic trade in 1975 and rose to become president of Local One-L 20 years later, has steered the union through tremendous industry challenges including plant closings, consolidations, and fewer jobs. Today, with 75 collective bargaining agreements and over 700 active members, LoPresti and his administration continue to negotiate solid contracts that maintain excellent wages, benefits and working conditions for all of the union’s
