BACKGROUNDThe voter-approved Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) identifies 37 miles of high capacity transit (HCT) corridors in addition to the existing 20-mile light rail line that opened in December 2008. As part of the system, the RTP includes a five-mile east/west corridor between 19th Avenue and downtown Glendale. HCT is designed to carry more passengers and make fewer stops, often within a dedicated lane, making it faster than traditional bus transit service. HCT options typically include light rail, streetcar and bus rapid transit.
The study area for the West Phoenix / Central Glendale corridor extends from 19th Avenue on the east, the Loop 101 on the west, Northern Avenue on the north, and Camelback Road on the south. The study area is broad to encompass key transportation corridors and activity centers, such as Grand Canyon University and downtown Glendale. The corridor will link to the current light rail system along 19th Avenue.
PROJECT STATUSIn early 2013, Valley Metro initiated a transit corridor study for the West Phoenix / Central Glendale area. The purpose of the study is to work with the cities of Glendale and Phoenix, as well as the community, to determine what type of transit (light rail, streetcar or bus rapid transit) is best for the corridor and the location of the route. After conducting initial technical analysis and stakeholder input, Valley Metro has identified six route alternatives within the study area for further analysis.

NEXT STEPSValley Metro will study these six alternatives and evaluate the best type of transit to serve each route, as well as identify impacts of transit service, travel times and basic costs. There will be opportunities for community input throughout the process. At the conclusion of the study, Valley Metro will seek approval of a preferred alternative from Phoenix and Glendale to carry into the design and environmental analysis phase. This corridor is planned for operation by 2026.
