WEST DEPTFORD HIGH SCHOOL E‐NEWS
EAGLE NEWS – October 12, 2018
Notes from the Principal Getting the Most out of High School! NEA (National Education Association) provides parents with
information they can use to help their teenagers succeed in high school. I would like to share some of
the material with our school community that may interest you in understanding your teenage child.
“High school is a time when parent involvement is critical but often not present. Following are some
hints on how to help your teen get the most out of high school. 1 – Help your child show up at school
with a good attitude and ready to learn. a) Keep tabs on school attendance – the more students miss
in class, the further they can get behind. b) Make sure your teens get plenty of sleep – teens require more
sleep than they think they need! c) Don’t accept excuses for any class – all classes are important in to
some degree whether students decide to move forward to college, trade, armed services and/or the work
force. 2 – Help organize time and materials. a) Keep an assignment calendar on‐line or in a book. b)
Learn to divide long‐term assignments into smaller tasks to avoid be overwhelmed and staying up late to
work on it last minute. c) Find a quiet place to study away from CELL PHONES and TVs. 3 – Take an
interest. a) Encourage school involvement by joining a club or sports teams. b) Encourage them to put
concerns or problems into words and help the figure out possible solutions and/or coping strategies. c)
Touch base with a teacher, counselor or coach that you can communicate with when you have questions.
The ultimate goal is to help students become self‐sufficient managers of their time and resources in order
to get the most out of high school. They may need your help even if they don’t realize it. Help them to
develop habits and strategies for greater achievement while encouraging them to take increasing
responsibility for their work.
Please remember that if you ever have any questions, problems or concerns, please contact the school so
we can assist you in obtaining the answers to your questions!
