born babies or problems with the mother’s placenta.
For women who are not pregnant, we offer a full range of diagnostic imaging
for every stage of your life, from ultrasound and sonohysterograms for evaluating
the uterine lining, to digital
screening and diagnostic mam-
mography, to pelvic MRI and
bone density testing. Tests to
assess and diagnose fertility
problems also are available.

CENTERED ON WHAT WOMEN WANT
Preconceptionto Birth: One-of-a-kind care. The Center for Women & Infants excels in all areas of the birthing experience.
We’re perhaps best known for our award-winning maternity services — the
place women in South Florida choose most often to have their babies.
In fact, South Miami Hospital has been delivering babies for more than
50 years. Yet, for women having difficulties conceiving, the Center also offers
resources to the area’s top fertility specialists, who not only treat infertility,
but can preserve fertility and can also reverse some tubal ligations. We also
provide a comprehensive education program for parents. Our doctors and
anesthesiologists are Board-certified and our nurses are renowned for their
caring and expertise.
Our Maternal-Fetal Special Care Unit, the only one of its kind in South
Florida, provides advanced care for expectant mothers and their unborn infants
24 hours a day. We care for high-risk mothers with a variety of conditions, such
as hypertension, diabetes, pre-eclampsia and preterm labor. The medical
team, led by a maternal-fetal specialist, also performs ultrasound-guided
procedures to correct anemia, conduct chromosome testing and treat fetal
bladder obstructions or lung problems, while the baby is still in the womb.
Neonatal Intensive Care andChild Development: Helping childrenachieve their potential.
If your newborn needs special care and observation, our Neonatal Inten-
sive Care Unit (NICU) is here for you, staffed by a team of specialized physi-
cians and nurses. Our NICU has 23 Level II beds and 15 Level III beds.
The Level III NICU provides care to babies weighing less than 2.2 pounds
and neonatal surgery to infants who require it. All Level III NICU patient
rooms are private to offer a calming, healing environment to the babies
and their families.
South Miami Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was the first hos-
pital in Miami-Dade County to have Board-certified physicians specializing
in neonatal care in the hospital around the clock. The unit also was first in
the community to offer innovative treatments, including inhaled nitric
oxide, for respiratory problems in premature babies.
The neonatal transport team, also the first of its
kind in South Florida, is staffed by experienced
professionals, who transport infants from other
medical facilities to South Miami Hospital. The
NICU also advocated lawmakers to mandate
hearing tests for all newborns in the state of
Florida.
Since 1993, our Child Development Center has
provided high-quality diagnostic and early intervention
services to help children reach their full capabilities in all areas of devel-
opment. Our team of specialists includes developmental pediatricians,
occupational and physical therapists, psychologists, speech/language
pathologists, social workers and audiologists, most of whom speak both
English and Spanish. Our program is known for having the highest
standards of quality and expertise in pediatric development assessment,
intervention and care.
Umbilical Cord Blood Collection:Unique to South Florida.
The Center for Women & Infants houses the only public umbilical cord
blood collection center in South Florida. We deliver more than 4,000 babies
each year. Our location in the heart of culturally diverse Miami makes us
the perfect epicenter for the collection of umbilical cord blood, which is
rich in stem cells. Research has found that cord blood can be used to treat
more than 70 diseases of the blood, including leukemia and sickle cell
anemia. Parents may choose to donate their newborn’s umbilical cord
blood, which would otherwise be discarded as medical waste.
Surgical and Gynecological Services:Coordinating the best treatmentoptions for you.
The Center for Women & Infants makes coping with cancer less confusing
and more convenient. Whether you require breast surgery, breast recon-
struction or radiation to treat cancer, you can count on us to always provide
compassionate, expert care.
If you have symptomatic fibroids, our Fibroid Center (opening late 2010)
combines all of the services you need in one location. A multidisciplinary
team of specialists will evaluate your needs and develop an individualized
treatment plan. The team includes a gynecologic surgeon, as well as diag-
nostic and interventional radiologists, who will work
together to determine your best treatment options.
Our surgical team offers robotic surgery, which
involves smaller incisions, less pain and quicker
recovery times than traditional surgery. Laparo-
scopic surgery and myomectomy are also
available, as well as uterine fibroid embolization
when appropriate. This minimally invasive proce-
dure blocks the blood flow to uterine fibroids.
Our Urodynamic Testing Lab, part of our diagnostic
services, evaluates symptoms such as urinary incontinence or painful
urination and provides treatment options, such as pelvic floor rehabilitation.
For women needing more advanced treatment options, we offer surgery to
correct pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence.
Of course, the Center for Women & Infants offers a full range of gyne-
cological and cancer treatment services. Your Patient Care Navigator can
help guide you to the diagnostic and treatment services you need.
Lifestyle Services:For a healthier, happier you.We can help you navigate a broad range of healthy lifestyle services. We offer
medical and surgical weight-loss programs, cosmetic medicine and surgery,
as well as smoking cessation programs and support groups. If you’re looking
to become a fitter, healthier, happier you, we can help.
In addition to our medical weight-loss programs, we also offer a surgical
option. Weight-loss (bariatric) surgery is recognized by the National
Institutes of Health as a viable treatment option for obesity. South Miami
