Cutwork embroidery exists in various forms, AnneMarie has used richelieu techniques and given them a twist. Cutwork tends to be made with a thread that matches the colour of the linen, but AnneMarie has used a soft variegated thread instead. All the edges are stitched in padded button-hole stitch. SOPHIE STANDING Sophie Standing is a British born artist who has lived in Africa for 15 years. She produces her art by combining printed appliqued fabrics while defining her work with creative free flowing free motion embroidery. Sophie loves to use colours and patterns and often includes some Kaffe Fassett fabric to give her that signature wow factor in her designs. The details of the animals, fauna and landscape are created by sewing with different coloured threads only. Best known for her African animals Sophie has chosen a New Zealand theme for her workshop at Nancys. The Tui is a wonderful subject for this four day workshop. The shape and textures of the bird will give you the opportunity to try out and learn the numerous thread painting techniques that Sophie uses when she is creating her textile art. Sophie will give students pretty much full reign to choose their own fabric bits - be it Kaffe, 40’s chintz, florals or maybe even some Tula pink. But she will guide each of you in being selective with your colour palate, to choose wisely when combining your textures and patterns for the best shading, shape and those little design areas. You will learn how to transfer the image onto your pre-painted background fabric using a template and then how to arrange the chosen fabrics in a specific way for the appliqué of this bird. Although every student’s piece will look different given the individual fabric choices and colours, Sophie will work through the brief with the whole class, step by step teaching you the thread painting skills and techniques she has mastered over the years. There will be some preparation prior to the class. Tutor Sophie Standing Date Sat – Tue Sep 1, 2, 3, 4 Time 9am – 5pm Price $1100 + materials Note: There is no FON Discount on this class

SAN BLAS APPLIQUE The San Blas islands near Panama are home to a traditional technique called Mola, panels of which were incorporated

into their clothing. Molas are handmade using a reverse appliqué technique. Several layers (usually two to seven) of different-coloured cloth (usually cotton) are sewn together; the design is then formed by cutting away parts of each layer. The edges of the layers are then turned under and sewn down. In this class you will start with your initials, or other meaningful letters to create a uniquely personal panel. There will be homework between the classes. Tutor Marge Hurst Date Sun Jul 29, Aug 12 Time 10 – 4pm on first day and 10 – 1pm on second day Price $180 + materials

SASHIKO INSPIRED BORO Boro is a term that describes patched and mended fabrics. Japanese boro textiles (usually clothing and bed covers) were sewn from rags and patches of indigo-dyed cotton during the 19th and early 20th century. The rural population of Japan couldn’t afford new clothing and had to literally make ends meet by patching together discarded cotton rags. Japanese families repaired and recycled everything from fisherman’s jackets to futon covers, handing them down for generations. During Japan’s industrialization in the early 20th century, the patchwork practice faded and a lot was simply thrown away as reminder of poverty and hard times. But now, almost a century later, boro have made a comeback, this time as decorative textiles. Recycle jeans and other textiles into a panel that will be quilted with Sashiko stitching. Clare will advise on composition and will have samples to inspire you. Tutor Clare Smith Date Sat Jul 7 Time 10 – 4pm Price $120 + materials

SIMPLE SHAPES – COMPLEX COLOURS For all levels. This is a class based on quilts Marge has been making over the past five or six years. Exploration and experimentation with colour and fabrics of all sorts of styles and designs are the key words for this class. Be prepared to go beyond your comfort zone in combining fabrics and you will make a dramatic quilt. There will be some sharing and swapping of fabrics and Marge will bring a few fabric strips which may fill in your gaps. The first half day will mostly be spent in discussing and deciding on fabrics with instruction on cutting and sewing which is quite simple. The second half day will be spent arranging your blocks. SMALL SCENES For all levels. In this workshop you will learn how to transform your photos or pictures of landscapes into little fabric quilts. We will be working in sizes

ranging from A3 down to about large postcard size. We will discuss colours, perspective, depth of field, methods of stitching, etc. You will also learn how to enlarge pictures without the use of a photocopier. (Even if you can’t draw!) You will choose a size to work in then create 3 or 4 tiny landscapes using the same photo but making use of a variety of fabrics. You will see how different fabrics change depth of field, perspective and mood. We will provide pictures of the type of fabric that would be suitable with the class requirements. If you dye your own fabric you may wish to use some of those. You will be able to sew these landscapes either by hand or by machine (machine is faster!). There will be some homework between the classes. Tutor Marge Hurst Date Sat Aug 4, 18 Time 10 – 4pm Price $240 + materials

TARTANKIWI TIGER Foundation piecing with paper is a great patchwork skill to have and Sheryl will show you how, using one of TartanKiwi’s patterns. It is ideal for creating pictures in fabric. A copy of the Pattern is included in the class price. Tutor Sheryl Anicich Date Sat Jul 14 Time 10 – 4pm Price $130 (includes Pattern) + materials
