New York has had an odd winter…mild weather followed by a massive snowstorm stranding cars all over the Long Island Expressway. I long for a great swim on a crystalline beach. What I am always lucky enough to have are great conversations with great people. Alan Kahn who started in the book retailing business working for Louis Epstein at Pickwicks in Los Angeles when he was fourteen. At fifteen he dared ask the legendary Epstein why he stocked Mein Kampf and Epstein said he was more worried about what people didn’t read than what people did. Alan retired from B&N a year ago. His publishing stories are legendary.
We had a Fall with extraordinary, complex, and brilliant books. Everyday Heroes, American Nurse, Afield, and Artists in Love I am thinking about constantly. We gathered many gold and silver awards (of all varieties) attesting to the incredible work that our creators, editors, and designers do. Our Spring is more frivolous but the pleasure is there.
Marsha Heckman, who years ago, created The Bride’s Book for us (which has reprinted a dozen times and sold close to 100,000 copies) is back again with her Bride’s Book of Lists. Keeping us joyous and organized is her task.
Donald Friedman and J.C. Suarès’ You’re My Dawg, Dog has no organizational aspirations. It is simply erudite and hilarious. Don wrote The Writer’s Brush for us years ago, a book celebrating artists who are writers and writers who are artists. J.C. has done a dozen books with us, from Hollywood Dictionary to The Big Book of Cats. Two alpha dogs have gotten together to produce the ultimate dog lover’s gift.
Lastly, editor Linda Sunshine (she brought Leonard Cohen’s Dance Me to the End of Love and e.e. Cummings May I Feel Said He into our list) decided two years ago to travel around the world with wine connoisseur Nick Wise visiting and writing about celebrities and their vineyards. The result, Celebrity Vineyards is an armchair wine lover’s miracle filled with tasting notes, travel information from Napa to Canada to Spain and Italy and interviews with some of the world’s most interesting people.
Of course, I am in love with our list and hope that you are experiencing how absolutely good — whether art books, photography books, or cookbooks — our books are. We do nothing lightly. I am always reminded how important it is to touch our books, to open them, to participate in the gatefolds, the vellums, the die-cuts, the stamping, the tip-ons — all the elements that distinguish them so brilliantly from everyone else’s. And, contrast so well with the technology that sometimes occupies too much of our lives.
Enjoy.

Celebrity VineyardsFrom Napa to Tuscany in Search of Great WineBy Nick WiseEditor, Linda Sunshine288 pages, 7" x 9"Hardcover, $35.00 ($35.00 CAN)225 photographsISBN 978-1-59962-116-6On Sale: March 2013
WINE - TRAVEL
By Nick Wise
From the hills of Napa to the mountain slopes of Piedmont, writer Nick Wise and editor Linda Sunshine went in search of great wine and famous people who are also winemakers. Their astonishing trip, the wines they tasted, and the incredible men and women they met are recounted in loving and often humorous detail in this fully illustrated and eminently readable new book filled with detailed information and wine recommendations.
In the past few years, helming a winery has become more and more popular among the rich and famous. But how much involvement in the actual process of making that wine did those celebrities actually have? What was it like to get into winemaking after having a successful career in another field?
To find out, Wise and Sunshine journeyed to Northern California to interview such winemakers as B. R. Cohn, manager of the Doobie Brothers; screenwriter Robert Kamen of The Karate Kid fame; race car drivers Mario Andretti and Randy Lewis; filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola; legendary football coach Dick Vermeil; acclaimed chef Charlie Palmer; the Walt Disney family; and representatives from the estates of former TV actors Raymond Burr and Fess Parker. In Canada’s Niagara Wine Valley, they discovered the wine estates of actor Dan Aykroyd and hockey great Wayne Gretzky. And in the hills of Tuscany, they tasted the wines of race car driver Jarno Trulli, adult-film star Natalie Oliveros (known professionally as Savanna Samson), and world-renowned composer Ludovico Einaudi. Their last visit was to the hills of Spain, where they toured Anta Banderas, the winery of Antonio
Banderas. Finally, the writers include a tribute to America’s very first vintner, Thomas Jefferson, whose Monticello estate is still producing wine from the grapes that the third president of the United States planted more than 200 years ago.
Written for fans of wine, travel, and the rich and famous, Celebrity Vineyards is a fascinating journey into a world that, for most of us, is only a dream. But what an amazing dream it is! Here are artists and entrepreneurs, dreamers and businesspeople who share a love of wine, a respect for the grape, and the joy of creating something amazing out of the land. Like a great glass of wine, these people will touch your heart and stay in your memory. Whether you are a wine connoisseur or can barely taste the difference between red and rosé, Celebrity Vineyards will delight, charm, and educate your palate.

You’re My Dawg, DogA Lexicon of Dog Terms for PeopleBy Donald FriedmanIllustrations by J.C. Suarès94 pages, 4.5" x 7"Hardcover, $12.95 ($12.95 CAN)64 illustrationsISBN 978-1-59962-123-4On Sale: February 2013
HUMOR - ANIMALS
By Donald Friedman
Illustrations by J.C. Suarès
Charmingly illustrated by J.C. Suarès—The New York Times Op-Ed page creator and designer whose drawings have appeared in The New Yorker, Time and Variety—You’re My Dawg, Dog is the clever 94-page book that every one of the 78 million pet dogs in this country will want to get for his person. Like dog calendars and dog t-shirts, it reinforces the love owners feel for their pets. It will make the perfect gift book with a brilliant blending of silliness and erudition. As one reader wrote, “it makes you smile and giggle as you learn.”
On a single page you will find quotes from Shakespeare and Rihanna, Pre-Socratic philosophers, Black Sabbath and the NASDAQ. You will learn that a dog is not only “the wolf that after 30,000 years of domestication became the hairless xolo that shocked Columbus, a poodle you can stick in your pocket, and a border collie with a thousand word vocabulary,” but is “the person in your life who’s always got your back, the friend who’ll help you bury the body.”
You’re My Dawg, Dog gives us fascinating etymologies and vivid examples of familiar words like “dog days”, “dogfight”, “Dogfish”, and the “dog collar” worn by clergymen. Colorful dog-terms are defined, like “black dog” which was Churchill’s nickname for his bouts of depression, “tough dog to keep on the porch”—Hillary’s descriptive for Bill, and “doggie style”, which the author drily explains is not “Vogue for Airedales and Cocker Spaniels.”

HISTORY ART/RELIGION–JUDAISM
It’s a beautiful thing, our country’s Constitution, and this extraordinary limited edition gives it its due. Nonagenarian Sam Fink’s unadorned, classically simple calligraphy and exquisite illustrations—originally done in pen-and-ink in 1987 and newly painted in color for these imposing folios (15" x 22")—are approachable and profoundly affecting, underscoring what an elegantly simple document our forefathers had the wisdom and forethought to craft. Housed in an exquisite deep clamshell box (16-1/4" x 23-1/4") and lined in blue Saifu cloth, it also contains a limited-edition print of the entire Constitution, newly
calligraphed onto one sheet, signed and numbered by Sam Fink. It is a worthy addition to any home.
The Book of Exodus was originally conceived by artist Sam Fink as a gift to his family, now living in Israel. Fink created forty original watercolor skyscapes, one for each chapter in the book of Exodus. This extraordinary text details the Jews’ enslavement in Egypt, their harrowing journey with Moses out of bondage, and the new laws established for them by their God. In these folio prints Sam Fink reaches his family across an ocean—and readers around the world—with breathtaking images that speak
to this powerful story. Each watercolor is meticulously hand-lettered with the Old Testament text, in Hebrew and in the Jewish Publication Society’s 1917 English translation. Housed in a blue cloth-covered clamshell box.
