Lord Jesus, open the Scriptures to us;
make our hearts burn while you speak to us.
The theme of this weekend’s readings is a challenge to
our Faith. That Faith should strengthen our Hope in His promises,
call us to true repentance for our sins and lead us to bearing wit-
ness to Christ by our works of Charity. So today we are called to
consider, "does our Faith do that for us?” The inspired words
invite us to make our living witness to the risen Lord by repenting
of our sins, renewing our lives, and meeting Jesus in the Word of
God, the person of those around us and at the Eucharistic Table.

As we continue to prepare for our sesquicentennial celebration here at Saint Mary, we wish
to record, both for ourselves and for the future, actual community membership at this historic time of
celebration. Beginning this week, we ask each parish family to pose for a Parish Directory photo. The
sitting should take no more than 15 minutes and happens in the east most classroom in the Parish Hall.
The Sign Up book, reserving your time slot, is located on the table in the back of church. As a “thank
you’ for your participation, you will receive a full color print of the photograph or the digital image.

Question of the Week 3rd Sunday of Easter - Luke 24:35-48
Key Passage: Jesus said, “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance for the for-giveness of sin would be preached in His name to the nations, beginning from Jerusa-lem. You are witnesses of these things.”
Question for adults: When is it hard for you to witness to Christ? Question for children: In what ways can you teach your friends about Jesus?

The common theme of this weekend’s readings is a challenge to our Faith in the living presence of the risen Lord. That Faith should strengthen our Hope in His promises, call us to true repentance for our sins and lead us to bearing witness to Christ by our works of Charity. So today we are called to consider, "does our Faith do that for us?” The readings also remind us that the purpose of Jesus’ death and Resurrec-tion was to offer us salvation from our sins. ROME (CNS) Pope Francis at Mass on Friday morning reflected on three examples of freedom – the Pharisee Gamaliel, the Apostles Peter and John, and Jesus – saying true freedom means making room for God in our lives and following Him. The freedom we hear about during this Easter season, the Pope said, is the freedom of the sons and daughters of God. Jesus gave us this freedom “through his redemptive act” on the Cross. Pope Francis said Gamaliel is the first example of freedom offered
by the day’s readings. He was a doc-tor of the law and Pharisee, who per-suaded the Sanhedrin to free the apos-tles Peter and John. Gamaliel, the Holy Father said, was “a free man, who reasoned with a clear mind”, and he convinced his colleagues that “time would take its toll” on the Christian movement of his day. “The free man is not afraid of time: he lets God do the work. He allows God to take His time. The free man is patient. [Gamaliel] was a Jew,

(True freedom, continued…) not a Christian, and he had not recog-nized Jesus as the Savior. But he was a free man. He thought things out and offered his ideas to others who accept-ed them. Freedom is not impatient.” The Pope said Pilate also reasoned well with a clear mind, realizing that Jesus was innocent. But, not being free, he could not overcome his desire for a promotion. “He lacked the cour-age of freedom because he was a slave to his career, ambition, and success,” the Pope said. Pope Francis then spoke about the second example of freedom, Peter and John. They had healed the paralytic, were hauled before the Sanhedrin, and were released after being whipped, despite being innocent. The Holy Father said, “They went away happy for having been judged worthy to suffer for the name of Je-sus.” This, he said, “is the joy of imi-tating Jesus. It is another type of free-dom that is greater, wider, and more Christian.” “This is the freedom of someone who loves Jesus Christ. They are sealed with the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ. ‘You have done that for me, so I do this for you.’ Even in our own day, there are many imprisoned and tortured Chris-tians, who possess the freedom to pro-fess Jesus Christ.” Pope Francis said the third and truest example is Jesus himself. When he had miraculously multi-plied the loaves in the desert, Pope Francis said the people had come to make him a king. But he escaped to the mountain to avoid that fate. “He avoided triumphalism and was not fooled by it. He was free, since his freedom was to do the will of the Fa-ther.” Pope Francis said Jesus would end up on the Cross. So, he said, “Jesus is the greatest example of free-dom.”
