DISCOUNT RETAILING• After World war II, a number of retail establishments in
the U.S. began to pursue a high-volume, low-profit-margin strategy designed to attract price-conscious consumers, which in 1950’s was know as “Discount Stores”

Wal-Mart Discount Stores First Wal-Mart Discount Stores was opened in the year 1962. At present 803 Wal-Mart Discount centers are operating in U.S. Average size of a store, 1,07,000 square feet. Employees, about 225 employees each year.
Wal-Mart Super Center First Wal-Mart super store was started in the year
1988. Slogan – “ Every day new prices”. At present 2747, Supercenters are operating in U.S. Average size of a store - 1,87,000 square feet. Employees - about 350 associates.
Wal-Mart Neighborhood market First Wal-Mart Neighborhood market was inaugurated in the year 1998. There are 152 Neighborhood market in U.S. today. Average size of store – 42,000 square foot. Employees – about 95 associates.
Market side Market side were opened in the year 2008. It is a small pilot grocery store specializing in fresh and delicious meals at great prices. At present, there are 4 Market side store in U.S.

– A distribution center loosens approximately 100 stores, on 320Km with the round.

THE WORLD BEST SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENTHUB AND SOPOKE:
• It was started in the year 1970’s. First retailing company to go in for centralized distribution center.
• Under the system, goods were centrally ordered, assembled at a massive warehouse, known as ‘distribution center’ (hub), from where they were dispatched to the individual stores (spoke).
• The hub and spoke system enabled Wal-Mart to achieve significant cost advantages by the centralized purchasing of goods in huge quantities and distributing them through its own logistics infrastructure
Inventory Management
• Wal-Mart invested heavily in IT and communication systems to effectively track sales and merchandise inventories in stores across the country.
• Wal-Mart was able to reduce unproductive inventory by allowing stores to manage their own stocks, reducing pack sizes across many product categories, and timely price markdowns.
• “MAGIC WAND” a computer system, helped them to keep track of the inventory in stores, deliveries, and backup merchandise in stock at the distribution centers.

VOICE BASED ORDER FILLING
• I t was installed in the year 1988.
• Each person responsible for order picking was provided with a microphone/speaker headset, connected to the portable (VOF) system that could be worn on waist belt.
• They were guided by the voice to item locations in the distribution centers.
• By installing the VOF system, Wal-Mart eliminated mis-picks and product labeling costs since the system did not require paper lists and labels to be affixed on the goods.

• The company asked its suppliers to ship goods in store-ready displays called pretty darn quick (PDQ) displays.
• Goods were packed in PDQ displays that arrived at the stores ready to be boarded on the racks.
• Wal-Mart’s employees could directly replace the empty racks at the
stores with fully packed racks, instead of refilling each and every item at the racks.

Radio Frequency Identification
• In efforts to implement new technologies to reduce costs and increase the efficiency, in July 2003, Wal-Mart asked its top 100 suppliers to be RFID compliant by January, 2005.
• Wal-Mart planned to replace bar-code technology with RFID technology. • The company believed that this replacement would reduce its supply
chain management costs and enhance efficiency.
• Because of the implementation of RFID, employees were no longer required to physically scan the bar codes of goods entering the stores and distribution centers, saving labor cost and time.
Wal-Mart Stores Operations• Wal-Mart was offering low prices, customer satisfaction
guaranteed, and hours that were realistic for the way people wanted to shop.
• Open all night, for university students.
• Wal-mart deals with the following products: Electronics , toys, jewellery, apparel, hardware, house ware,
vision centre, pharmacy, hair salon, food products, grocery and hot foods.
• Inventory turnover exceeded 4.5 times in 1985.• Inventory turnover exceeded 7.3 times in 2009.

Wal-Mart also has very strong community based initiatives. Example – Giving scholarships to schools, raising funds for hospitals, being environmental friendly. Wal-Mart International Wal-Mart international was created in the year 1991. It is the fast-growing part of Wal-Mart operations. It has its operations in 14 countries outside U.S. There are 3615 stores. Employees – more than 68,000 associates.
