PITTSBURGH PENGUINS VS. SAN JOSE SHARKS

SERIES NOTES

SERIES OVERVIEW

Two of the NHL’s most successful franchises in recent years, the Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks, meet for the right to lay claim to the Stanley Cup.

Since 2004, only the Detroit Red Wings (12 appearances) have made more playoff appearances than the Sharks (11) and Penguins (10). During that same time span, both clubs have made four appearances in at least the conference finals, and at least one of the two teams has played in the conference finals in seven of the last 12 years (PIT, 2008, ’09, ’13, ’16; SJS, 2004, ’10, ’11, ’16).

Pittsburgh and San Jose played both of its games against one another this season before the Penguins made the move to make Mike Sullivan head coach. San Jose was victorious on Nov. 21 at CONSOL Energy Center (3-1) and the Penguins returned the favor by winning 5-1 at the SAP Center at San Jose on Dec. 1. Pittsburgh’s win that night erased a 12-game Penguins’ losing streak in San Jose (0-9-3) dating back to 1997.

ALONG COMES PAULY

Paul Martin was an instrumental cog in the Penguins’ defensive core for five seasons from 2010-15. Now he will play against his former teammates in the Stanley Cup Final.

Pittsburgh’s Defensive Player of the Year when the club advanced to the 2013 Eastern Conference Final, Martin had 109 points (17G-92A) in 297 regular-season games with Pittsburgh, and 24 points (3G-21A) in 43 playoff contests.

Versatile forward Nick Spaling, who played last year with the Penguins, is also on the Sharks’ roster. Spaling was one of the two roster players dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs last summer in the blockbuster trade that brought Phil Kessel to Pittsburgh. Spaling joined the Sharks from Toronto on Feb. 22. He had 27 points (9G-18A) in 82 regular-season games with the Penguins last year.

NEW AGE STARS

San Jose’s offensive attack is paced by Logan Couture and captain Joe Pavelski, the top-two scorers thus far in the 2016 playoffs.

Couture, who has a league-best 24 points (8G-16A), was injured for a significant portion of the regular season, but is a five-time 20-goal scorer who has twice reached the 30-goal mark.

Couture has been at his best this playoffs in elimination games, tallying three points in each of the Sharks’ series-clinching wins:

Game G A PTSGame 6 vs. STL 1 2 3Game 7 vs. NSH 1 2 3Game 5 vs. LAK 0 3 3

Pavelski, who is referred to as ‘Little Joe,’ leads the entire playoffs with 13 goals and is second to Couture with 22 points. He was the NHL’s fifth-leading goal scorer during the regular season with 38 tallies.

That marked Pavelski’s third-straight 30-goal season, and the fourth of his career. He enters the Cup Final riding a seven-game point streak (5G-5A-10PTS) and he has at least one point in 14 of the team’s 18 games this spring.

Couture has three points (2G-1A) in seven career games versus Pittsburgh and Pavelski eight points (3G-5A) in 12 contests.

CLASS OF ‘97

The 1997 NHL Draft was held at the Civic Arena, and the top-two selections from that year, Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, are both in the Sharks’ lineup.

Thornton was the first pick, selected by the Boston Bruins. He joined the Sharks midway through the 2005-06 season. Since the day he debuted with the Sharks, Thornton ranks third among all NHL players in points with 887, and first in assists with 679, 48 more than second-place Henrik Sedin (631):

Thornton has amassed 1,341 points (377G-964A) in 1,367 career regular-season games, plus another 118 points (27G-91A) in 150 playoff games entering this series.

Thornton played under Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan when the latter was Boston’s bench boss from 2003-06.Marleau was chosen by the Sharks with the second pick, and he has since spent his entire career in San Jose. Earlier

this year on Nov. 21, Marleau picked up his 1,000th career point against Pittsburgh when he set up a Brent Burns goal at CONSOL Energy Center. Marleau has 1,036 points (481G-555A) in 1,411 regular-season contests and another 115 points (64G-51A) in 165 playoff games.

STAR SHOWDOWN

A major subplot of this series will be the superstar defensemen facing off – Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang and San Jose’s Brent Burns. Both All-Stars this year, they were two of the NHL’s top-three highest-scoring blueliners during the regular season.

Not only did they rank among the highest-scoring D-men, each also established career highs offensively. Burns scored 27 goals, six more than the next-closest defenseman, and had 75 points, which stood just seven behind

league-leader Erik Karlsson. During the postseason, Burns has been even better, pacing all defenders with 20 points (6G-14A) in 18 games, including assists in each of the last two games of the Sharks’ six-game defeat of St. Louis in the Western Conference Final.

QUIETLY DELIVERING

Brent Burns gets most of the publicity, and Paul Martin starred for Pittsburgh, but a third Sharks defenseman has an equally impressive resume. Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic is one of the best NHL players that people on the East Coast have probably never heard of.

The 10th-year NHLer is coming off of a career year offensively with 39 points (8G-31A) in 67 games, but it’s his two-way work that makes him so good. In 737-career regular-season contests, Vlasic has posted a plus-125. He averages just over 22 minutes per game for his career, seeing action on both the power play and penalty kill.

Vlasic’s play doesn’t go unnoticed by Hockey Canada. He will represent his country for the fourth time internationally at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey in September. Vlasic won a gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games and a silver medal at the 2009 World Championship. He also suited up for the 2012 World Championship.

The Sharks chose Vlasic in the second round (35th overall) in the 2005 NHL Draft that also produced the Penguins’ Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang. Vlasic’s regular-season point total ranks fifth among all blueliners drafted that year:

SEASON OF CHANGE

The Penguins and Sharks both rode head coaches in their first years with their respective teams to the Stanley Cup Final. Last summer, the Sharks tabbed Peter DeBoer to replace the highly-successful Todd McLellan. In mid-December, Pittsburgh chose Mike Sullivan to replace Mike Johnston.

The moves didn’t immediately change the fortune of either team before eventually paying off in the long run.On Dec. 20, the Sharks ranked 19th in the NHL with 34 points, and the Penguins were right behind, tied for 20th overall

with 33. Both teams took off from there, as the Penguins had the second-most points in the NHL (71; 33-12-5 record) the rest of

the way, with the Sharks closely behind them with the fourth-highest amount (64; 30-15-4 record).Sullivan will be coaching in his first Stanley Cup Final. DeBoer advances to the championship round for the second time,

as his New Jersey Devils lost in six games to the Los Angeles Kings in 2012.

RISING STARS

Pittsburgh and San Jose split the season series, 1-1, this year, but both games came before Mike Sullivan took over as Penguins head coach on Dec. 12. Not only will the coach and style of attack differ for the Penguins this time around, but many of the players from those early-season contests will as well.

Pittsburgh used 19 skaters against the Sharks, but no less than six of them – David Perron, Adam Clendening, Sergei Plotnikov, Rob Scuderi, David Warsofsky and Pascal Dupuis – no longer play for the Penguins.

Nine Penguins players who have logged playoff action this spring and did not play against San Jose this year include goalie Matt Murray; defensemen Olli Maatta, Justin Schultz and Derrick Pouliot; and forwards Bryan Rust, Tom Kuhnhackl, Oskar Sundqvist, Conor Sheary and Carl Hagelin.

PAST CHAMPIONS

Seven players participating in this year’s Cup Final are previous Stanley Cup champions. San Jose goaltender Martin Jones (2014) is the lone Shark with a ring, winning a title with the Los Angeles Kings as Jonathan Quick’s backup.

The Penguins have six previous Stanley Cup champions. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Chris Kunitz and Marc-Andre Fleury all won titles with Pittsburgh in 2009. Matt Cullen won a championship with Carolina in 2006. Kunitz is the only two-time winner, having also captured a crown with Anaheim in 2007.

SOLID DEBUT

During the offseason the Sharks solidified their goaltending position by acquiring Martin Jones from the Boston Bruins by way of the Los Angeles Kings. Jones rewarded the Sharks faith by leading them all the way to the Cup Final.

During the playoffs, Jones leads all netminders in wins (12) and shutouts (3) entering this series, while posting a 2.12 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage.

Jones has been dominant in his 12 wins, posting a 1.58 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage. In his six losses his goals-against average has jumped to 3.12 and his save percentage has fallen to .881. He has given up four goals in four of his six defeats.

During the regular season, Jones ranked third in the NHL with 37 wins, trailing only Washington’s Braden Holtby (48) and Quick (40).

SERIES NOTES

STAY OUT OF THE BOX

It would behoove the Penguins to stay out of the penalty box during this series. The Sharks finished the regular season with the league’s third-best power play (62 for 275; 22.6%) and they’ve been even better in the postseason, ranking second overall (17 for 63; 27.0%).

The Sharks have scored a power-play goal in 11 of 18 games during the postseason, going 9-2 in games when they score on the man-advantage.

Logan Couture leads all NHL players with 11 playoff power-play points (4G-7A). Captain Joe Pavelski has a team-best five power-play tallies.

One potential positive for the Penguins? The Blues held the Sharks without a power-play goal in four of the six games in the Western Conference Final.

BEEN AROUND THE BLOCK

Fourth-line Sharks forward Dainius Zubrus has a lengthy history against the Penguins thanks to spending a majority of his career in the Eastern Conference.

The first-year Shark is playing his third career playoff series against the Penguins, having suited up against them previously in 1997 (Philadelphia) and 2001 (Washington). The ’97 series marked the last playoff series Mario Lemieux played before his first retirement, and the ’01 series was the year Lemieux made his famous comeback.

Zubrus has 33 points (11G-22A) in 69 career regular-season meetings with Pittsburgh and one tally in 11 playoff games.
