What Instrument can you choose for band?
In the band, there are MANY choices! Choose an instrument that you love. You
should like the way it sounds, the way it looks and the way that it’s played.
Choices are flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and
percussion.
If you can, listen to all of them so you can make your best decision about what
you’re most interested in! You can also scroll down to the instruments that you
want to check out first.
The next slides will give details about each of the instrument choices. First,
there’s an overview of band followed by slides of each instrument and a
professional video series I found with student players.

Brass, and Percussion. Band includes all the instruments that are in the last 3 of
those 4 families.

FluteFlutes are a woodwind
instrument and can be made
of wood or metal. They have
lots of cool fingerings, and
you play be blowing across
the hole. Flutes can be
played by anybody! The flute
is very portable, the case can
even fit in your backpack! On
the next slide you will see a
video of someone playing
flute!
![Page 9: Virtual Elementary Band](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051600/627ffbd155cda00dad08c47c/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
ClarinetClarinets are a woodwind
instrument and can be made of
wood, metal or synthetics. The
fingerings are similar to a recorder,
and you play by blowing into a hole
with a reed on it. A reed is a small
thin piece of wood that has to
vibrate to help the clarinet make
sound. Clarinets can be played by
anybody! You’ll hear how beautiful
the clarinet sounds on the next
slide!
![Page 11: Virtual Elementary Band](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051600/627ffbd155cda00dad08c47c/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Alto SaxophoneSaxophones are a woodwind instrument
and are most often made of metal, but,
they are not a brass instrument! The
fingerings are similar to a recorder, and
you play by blowing into a hole with a
reed on it. A reed is a small thin piece of
wood that has to vibrate to help the
saxophone make sound. Saxophones
can be played by anybody!
The case is about the size of rolling
suitcase and can be pretty heavy
because the saxophone is metal. This is
something to consider if you walk to
school!

TrumpetTrumpets are a brass instrument
and are most commonly made of
brass. It has 3 valves and sound is
made by “buzzing” your lips.
You’ll see what that means in the
videos!
The case for the trumpet is the
same size as the instrument and
not very heavy because the
trumpet isn’t that heavy!
![Page 15: Virtual Elementary Band](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051600/627ffbd155cda00dad08c47c/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
TromboneTrombones are a brass instrument
and are most commonly made of
brass. It has a long slide and
sound is made by “buzzing” your
lips. You’ll see what that means in
the videos! The slide is really fun
to use. Trombones can be played
by anybody!
![Page 17: Virtual Elementary Band](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022051600/627ffbd155cda00dad08c47c/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
BaritoneBaritones are a brass instrument
and are most commonly made of
brass. Sound is made by “buzzing”
your lips. Baritones are the exact
same size as a trombone, they are
just curled up and have buttons
instead of a slide!
If you want to play the baritone, Ms.
Hirt will work really hard at getting
you TWO so you can keep one at
home and one at school

Percussion
Percussion involves MANY different
instruments. Some examples are
snare drum, bells, cymbals, bass
drum, timpani, tambourine, claves,
woodblock and many more. The two
main instruments you will play in
elementary school are snare drum
and bells. You will spend most of the
time playing the practice pad instead
of snare. These things come in a
percussion kit. Percussion can be
played by anybody! Enjoy both
videos!

Band SummarySo to recap - choose an instrument you think sounds nice and looks fun to play.
Don’t choose based on the size of the instrument or whether or not your friends
are playing it. It’s up to you!
You can choose flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, or
percussion.
Students get band once a week. It does not take you out of class. It is one of
your specials.
