January TV HighlightsIt’s winter in Columbus. The Buckeyes have wrapped up another successful year; it’s the perfect time to get comfy and settle into a season of favorite programs on WOSU TV.
After what seemed like an eternity, the new season of Doc Martin is ready for its premiere on January 10! So what’s on tap for the residents of Portwenn? Martin and Louisa are facing up to the challenges of living happily together with toddler son James in tow, PC Joe Penhale is looking forward to married life with Janice, and Bert Large is struggling to make his whiskey business successful. Let’s hope this time he finally gets it right.
Sunday nights in January are all about romance and royalty – with a line-up of great dramas to take you through the night. We begin with the Andrew Davies' multi-award winning adaptation of Jane Austen's classic, and fourth runner-up in the Great American Read, Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.
Up next, royalty hour begins with the return of Victoria on Masterpiece. The third season of this lavish drama begins in a time of turbulence and uncertainty with Victoria facing a crisis that threatens to end her reign. We top off Sunday nights with a little more romance on Victoria & Albert The Wedding. Our favorite English historian Lucy Worsley leads the re-creation of one of the most romantic weddings ever seen.
WOSU TV is the only place to be on Sunday nights.
Antiques Roadshow
But wait, there’s even more! Antiques Roadshow kicks off a new season on January 7. This year appraisals will be held on the grounds of historic homes and buildings, beginning with Meadow Brook Hall in Michigan. We’ll learn the story behind beloved family heirlooms and thrift store finds. One special trinket turned out to be a $77,500 appraisal!
Finding Your Roots
Tuesday’s are all about Finding Your Roots. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is back with a new group of celebrity guests. Each episode features a different pair of celebrity guests, who are bound together by an intimate, sometimes hidden link. Perhaps even a common ancestral past.
Nature
The relationship between man and his noble steed is almost as old as civilization itself. Anthropologist Niobe Thompson travels the world in search of the moment when man first climbed into the saddle to uncover the history between man and horse on Nature’s two-part special “Equus: Story of the Horse”.
Thompson wants to know how our species conquered and flourish side by side with the horse. How the relationship between humans and horses evolved in today’s modern world? One of several stunningly beautiful Nature’s you’ll see all this month.
The Dictator's Playbook
We’ll also examine a little history on Wednesday nights, with the 6-part documentary series The Dictator’s Playbook. The series traces the rise and fall of six dictators, from Mussolini to Saddam Hussein. Each episode examines the political and social environments of each dictator's individual journey, and sets out to answer the question, how did they seize and then lose their power?
Get your highlighter, mark your programs and settle in for all the great programs this month on WOSU TV!

2019 News Preview – What to Watch ForSince the surprise election of Donald Trump as president, forecasting news events has become a bit of a crapshoot, but here’s a list of a five things we’re watching in WOSU Newsroom in 2019:
All programs are subject to change. 13
1. Ohioans for President? We should know early in 2019 if John Kasich, Sherrod Brown or any other Ohioan will make a serious run for president. The Iowa Caucuses and New Hampshire Primary are 13 months away. That means candidates have to get there soon to form political alliances, establish organizations and get into the minds of voters. If John Kasich and Sherrod Brown start booking flights to Des Moines and Manchester, they could be on their way to announcing their candidacies.
2. DeWine and Conquer, or Collaborate?Ohio’s new governor has a different style than Ohio’s outgoing chief executive. While John Kasich mellowed in his second term, he came into office making bold changes, leaving Democrats and even some Republicans sputtering. Mike DeWine is seen more as a collaborator and he promises to work with lawmakers from both parties. Nevertheless, with Republicans holding supermajorities in the Ohio House and Senate, DeWine may only have hard-right legislation to sign or veto.
3. Controversial Issues Launch Columbus Mayoral CampaignColumbus voters could decide whether to place a 5 percent tax on entertainment and sports tickets. City Council approved the tax to fund arts organizations and repairs to Nationwide Arena, but opponents were gathering signatures to put it on the ballot. That and public money for part of the Crew Stadium project could anger some voters as Andrew Ginther campaigns for re-election. However, with Democrats dominating Columbus City Hall, Republicans face long odds of mounting a serious challenge.
4. Columbus Schools – New LeadershipThe Columbus City Schools has a new leader. Talisa Dixon takes over as superintendent in March. She faces a tough challenge. The Columbus Board of Education remains divided and the district faces the prospects of a state takeover because of failing grades on annual report cards.
5. What’s Next for Urban Meyer? With the new year comes the end of the NFL and college football seasons, and the yearly crop of coach firings. Even though Urban Meyer said he’s ‘pretty certain’ he won’t coach after leaving Ohio State, plenty of NFL teams and colleges will wonder if he really means it.
