1953 - 2013...Volkswagen commemorates 60 years in Australia
Hi...
Firstly welcome to the new members that have joined up since July - Thank you so much
for supporting our (your) club! The new committee has been very busy since the AGM organising and
attending events along with personal commitments. This is a good moment to remind everyone that be-
hind the scenes all the work carried out is in our own time and all 100% voluntary.
So when we get good numbers show up the events it is so rewarding for everyone involved. This was
evident at the recent Busselton Drive Inn movies weekend! The atmosphere around the campsite was
amazing. The new club marquee performed well and made for a great meeting point for the evening
drinks and chat.
The 1st Sunday of December is a deadline for many. It is a date set 10
months or so back as a target to finish the project ready for a debut, so
the pressure is on for some people right now with late nights in the
shed. Are you preparing your pride and joy for Day of the
Volkswagen? If not don't worry just turn up! DoVW has a "Shine" ele-
ment to it with trophies, but this event is for everyone whatever condi-
tion your car/kombi is in.
Don't be shy and park it outside - come in and be part of the display.
Looking forward to seeing you ALL at Taylor Reserve in a couple of
weeks!
Happy travels be safe and don’t forget to wave!

1953 - 2013...Volkswagen commemorates 60 years in Australia
Background
The Volkswagen Club of Western Australia (Inc) is
a Member of the Council of Motoring Clubs of WA
(Inc) - CMC WA - and has been granted permission
by the Department of Transport to provide Conces-
sional Club Licence facilities to its members.
This provides a significant savings on vehicle li-
cence costs, especially if you have a number of
cars.
To have a Concessional Club Licenced vehicle the
owner must be and remain a financial member of a
recognised Car Club (VW Club of WA) that is affili-
ated to the Council of Motoring Clubs of WA Inc.
Any type of motor vehicle manufactured more than
25 years ago (at commencement of year model)
can be put on Concessional Licence. This includes
cars, trucks, motor cycles, buses and tractors.
You may use your vehicle for any minuted Club
event even when organised by a different approved
club from the one to which you belong. You may
use your vehicle for participation in rallies, tours,
meetings, displays, busy bees or any activity au-
thorised by approved Clubs, Registrars or Council
of Motoring Clubs of WA Inc.
You are also permitted to ‘Road Test’ your vehicle,
which means, taking to a service centre for repair,
filling with fuel, occasional driving to ensure
brakes, cooling and other systems are operating
correctly.
You are NOT permitted to use your vehicle to com-
mute to work or for general transport.
To get a Concessional Licence for your vehicle,
please direct all enquiries to the VW Club Conces-
sional Licencing Registrar - Dave Moore on
Mobile: 0402 607 552, send an email to…
or post a letter to the Concessional Licencing Reg-
istrar at the Club PO Box address.
How simple can it be?
I thought I may be able to motivate some of you
by letting you know the simple process to get that
car that sits idle for most of the time in your gar-
age or driveway, onto concessional licensing.
Once you have the list of vehicle inspectors – you
pick one, then call to arrange a time to take your
car for inspection. You will also need to take a let-
ter from the club membership officer, to confirm
you are a member. Do that first.
The inspector will inspect the car, fill in paperwork
and send it to the licensing dept. It should then be
returned a few days later and you receive a call
asking you to go back and collect the paperwork
from the inspector.
Then you will need to take all paperwork down to a
licensing centre and get it swapped over.
The cost of licensing Smurf was reduced from
$416 to $38 per year.

Name: Andy Macey Forum User Name: Veedubandy
Current Vehicle(s): Blue 66
Beetle – daily driver; Red 73
Kombi – camping trips
First VW: 1972 tintop Danbury
camper used for weekend surf
trips to Newquay in Cornwall.
Also took that van down to SW
France following the Surfing
World Tour. Since that van, there
has been 3 other kombis, one
used for a 6 month trip round Oz
and a 59 beetle.
Earliest VW Memory: Mum
driving us to school in a blue
beetle circa 1968. She used to
have to open the drivers window
slightly to let someone close the
passenger door.
At night, because we lived out in
the sticks, she used to try to fol-
low another car, until they pulled
away, because the 6volt lights
were not bright enough on the
country roads.
VW most wanted: I really just
need a large shed so I can have
them all, but I guess a split
camper has to be top of the list.
Best club event you attended:
As long as there is camping in-
volved I am happy. If I was
forced to choose then probably
Busselton Drive-In and Munster
Garage Cruise.
VW Club: I appreciate all the
hard work by the club to organize
these great events, so I put my
hand up when I was volunteered
as Membership Officer.
I have not done anything like this
before so I will give it a go and
hopefully you will all support me
by getting your renewals done on
time

20132013 By Tina Moore
So our first camping trip with our
newly fitted out interior started at
4am Saturday morning with me
being woken my thunderstorms
and an unsettled Karmann that
decided she had to sleep with her
head on mine!!
Dave left for work and I watched
out the windows wondering if the
rain was going to stop for long
enough for me to finish packing
the Kombi, as everything came
out for the refit everything had to
go back in again luckily we start-
ed Friday evening!
About 11.30 the rain finally decid-
ed to stop so I started getting
everything else loaded up, Kar-
mann jumped in the back and it
took a bit of coaxing to get her
out again!! I just got everything
in by the time Dave got home.
So off we set, first stop to do our
duty & vote and oh what choice
we had!! Of course Dave spotted
the Motoring Enthusiasts party
looks like they might be getting a
new member
We met up with Graham & Baxter
at Mundaring and started the
cruise down, we picked up Jamie,
GMac and Justin on route so we
had a nice little convoy of 3 splits
& 2 bays. As usual the convoy got
plenty of attention lots of smiles,
waves, thumbs up and several
cameras hanging out of car win-
dows. It’s always so nice to see
the reactions from everyone when
we travel together just about eve-
rybody has a VW story to tell
We cruise into Waroona shortly
after 3pm and are greeted but a
group of kids all smiling and wav-
ing as we drive through town, we
find our way to the oval and are
met by a friendly bunch that fill
us in on what is happening &
where we can camp. So we set off
round the oval and park up the
(Continued on page 13)

Kombi’s to make camp. Dave has
got the hang of this drinking beer
malarkey I turn round & he had a
beer in his hand already although
I don’t think he beat GMac to it
I manage to keep him focused
long enough to finish getting set-
up before he got too involved in a
conversation or his head in an
engine bay Time to sit around
& have a few drinks & a chat.
Mike & his daughter arrive just as
we’re heading over to the kitchen
where the Lions club where cook-
ing very nice burgers, choice was
brown or red, didn’t take too long
to work out that was the sauce
Karmann disappeared on me but
then I heard Dave call out she
was at the back door, there she
was sitting looking through the fly
screen smelling those burgers
cooking tail wagging! Several
burgers and a good laugh with
the men form the Lions club later
we head over to the hall to join
the other campers. Mike joined us
in the hall for a drink, he decided
not to come down in his buggy as
he didn’t think his daughter would
appreciate sleeping in the rain
Back at camp we settled in for the
evening , I came prepared with
several layers of clothes, blankets
hats & gloves but the wind had
gone & it was perfectly still so I
only used a blanket and gloves to
keep warm. Jamie decided to get
comfy and lay on his bed so we
all knew what was coming next
and sure enough not long after he
was fast asleep with GMac trying
to work out how he was still
breathing with his face buried in
his pillow! Dave & I get our first
night in the new interior and what
a difference to our first night on
Boxing day when we parked on
the Great Ocean Road and I didn’t
sleep all night because it was so
cold!! The van was now all warm
& cosy thanks to the new insula-
tion in the walls & roof & a foam
mattress not a cold air bed J All
we need now is sound proofing so
I don’t have to listen to the thud
thud of the birthday party until
2am

As normal the 2 Grahams were up
at the crack of dawn, I got up and
joined them for cuppa then eve-
ryone else roused themselves. We
packed up and moved the
Kombi’s over to the line-up and
got front row position
We had a wander round watching
people starting to set up and got
first look in all the stalls, Dave &
Jamie both bought some very
nice junk art.
We had prime position back at
the Kombi’s watching all the other
vehicles arrive whilst we sat &
relaxed.
It turned out to be a beautiful day
with the sun shining perfect for
strolling around the show. We
were surprised to hear the show
was only in its second year, the
organisers & volunteers did a fan-
tastic job, the day ran smoothly.
There was a steady stream of
people around all day and alt-
hough it wasn’t a huge show
there was a nice mix with the Vin-
tage Machinery, motorbikes, cars,
hand tools, wood turning, an-
tiques, gift stalls and of course
not forgetting the food & drink
vans.
The prices were very reasonable
which meant Dave found plenty
to buy, the atmosphere was re-
laxed and the people were friend-
ly which made for a very enjoya-
ble weekend.
We will be putting this in our cal-
endar for next year
Although there are still some fin-
ishing touches to do on our interi-
or the setup worked really well,
just how we wanted it. Thanks
Dave for all your hard work I’m
lucky to have you

Thank you to the Mercedes-Benz Car Club of Western Australia for running of the German Car Day and
the excellent destination of Yanchep National Park...a great run up the coast on a bit of a wet and windy
day. Thanks for the VW Club members (and non-members) that turned up, braved the indifferent weath-

It was a great day!
They had a "Show & Shine " gen-

face painting etc just a general
fun get together.
Kim Muste (65Birch) from the VW
Club SW division took home a
trophy.
The South West Car Club wel-
comed us dubbers helping it
achieve one of its biggest meet

for 2 dubs to win awards out of 4
categories at an event with a
broad mix of metal Jason Lillee's

1953 - 2013...Volkswagen commemorates 60 years in Australia
The Western Australian Day of
the Volkswagen is held on
the first Sunday in December
each year. This years show
happens to be on 1st. The
venue is the lovely Taylor Re-
serve in Victoria Park with the
Swan river and the Perth City
skyline making a great back
drop to the show.
This year we are celebrating
60 years of Volkswagen in
the Australia. The colour for
the show this year is red so
get out your Volkswagen Club
Tee shirt – If you don’t have
one there will some on sale
along with the recently ac-
quired Club Car badges, Pin
badges, and Key rings all un-
der the new marquee.
The gates open at 08:30 am
and close at 10am until the
presentation proceedings are
over at approximately 2pm.
This years categories for the
show and shine have not
changed from last year. We
have got plenty of sponsors on
board for the trophies (some
with extra bonus certificates
and prizes).
We have decided to slightly
tweak the layout of the field
mainly the parking direction
and better traffic manage-
ment.
Judging will be conducted by a
team of 5 volunteers before
your car is parked. There is a
gold coin donation for those
wanting their vehicle judged –
this goes to our club charity
this year, the Douchenne
Foundation a very worthy
cause! Collection tins will be
at the club tent throughout the
day too.
We will have food and drink
vendors to keep you replen-
ished including the Lions Club
sausage sizzle and the Bay
window ice-cream van will be
serving those soft serves!
MMMMmmmmm
Kim Shermann is kindly keep-
ing the tradition of the face
painting going in the “kids ar-
ea”, and it should go without
mentioning the inarguable
“colouring in competition”
which is always a hit, will be
on again. A free Bouncy Cas-
tle will be present for the en-
ergetic ones.
Rocker Cover racing is a bit of
fun and this is a feature again
this year with a prize for first
place.
We encourage swap and sell
too, so if you want to load up
your ride with those parts that
may help somebody else finish
theirs off, bring them along we
do not charge for this. If you
are looking for a part or a bit
of Merchandise bring your wal-
let or purse along.
Don’t let the words “Show and
Shine” put you off parking on
the field if you feel your vehi-
cle isn’t to show condition, this
is a gathering of Volkswagen
enthusiasts and their cars. Let
people see your work in pro-
gress or your daily driver –
don’t be shy and come and
join the display.
If you can’t commit to the
“Lock in” an overflow car park
is open so you can leave when
you want. The Lock in is for
the safety of the patrons and
lets face it – its only 4 hours
for one day of the year.
This is always a great day,
which amazes me every year
with the turnout of different
vehicles, we are expecting
over 150 to drive through or
be trailered through the gate.
We have a retro Kinchrome
Esky as a door prize to fit in
with the 60 years anniversary
so be sure to place your ticket
in the box on the day.
Once the gates open for de-
parture at around 2pm don’t
feel like you have to shoot off,
stick around for a chat a cold
one and enjoy the day. Be
safe on your journey – See
you there!

MELLOW YELLOW
...a test drive of
the latest BEETLE !
Well I had been waiting for the
day I could have the latest Beetle
for a whole week. I had read
about it, saw it in the showrooms
and even had a sales booklet sent
from Germany by a friend there,
as well as coming into contact
with it at the NSW National Bug-
In at Easter this year.
But nothing could prepare me for
when I picked up the car from
Nick at Volkswagen...the Beetle
was YELLOW!
Not just any yellow but a near
perfect match to my New Beetle
of 13 Years.
So my road test report has
turned into a comparison of the
two cars...13 years and
330,000kms apart.
NB: I had to give my New Beetle
a good clean and wash before I
could park it next to the Press
Car.
Another one of those sacrifices
that you have to make for Club
and Press Car.
But just a prelude to the compari-
son…the latest Beetle drives like
a new VW, has all the gadgets of
the new VW and even the engine
at 1.4l is very efficient also has
the necessary oomph when you
need it.
Like all new VWs once you sit in it
all the controls are in the same
place and do the same things, so
learning is kept to a minimum.
The lower and wider stance of
the latest Beetle is quite evident
in this photo. You will see a
smaller windscreen on the 2013
model and the trademark dash
from the older car is gone.
Front on the bonnet is squarer
and comes down closer to the
bumper line while the headlights
are more elliptical…now holding
day-driving lights.
However side on the roundness
of the bonnet as well as the
wheel arches remain.
I would imagine that it is just as
hard to replace a globe in the
new headlights as it is in the
2000 model. What a job for such
a little repair.

1953 - 2013...Volkswagen commemorates 60 years in Australia
The rear of the 21st century
Beetle is a lot rounder with more
of a fast back look to it, some-
thing similar to a Porsche. Neither
car really captures the retro look
to match the Beetles of the 1950-
1970s, however the 2000 Beetle
does have the round tail lights
split red and orange.
Unfortunately, the latter Beetles
even lost the retro colour split
with a ‘dot’ in the middle light, a
look I didn’t and still don't like.
The lights on the 21st century
Beetle have gone right away from
what I consider to be Beetle tail
lights, again something reminis-
cent of a Porsche look.
The boot spoiler is built in where
the one on my 2000 Beetle is an
after market accessory.
From the rear it is easy to see
again the wide stance of the new-
est model along with a squarer
tail gate that opens into a larger
boot/hatch area.
The different size of the boot/
hatch area is very evident when
you place the same luggage in
each. The newer Beetle also has a
split rear seat where as the 2000
Beetle is a one piece.
October - November 2013 Via West Page 26
1953 - 2013...Volkswagen commemorates 60 years in Australia
A comparison of the motor and
under the bonnet shows some
obvious differences.
The 2000 Beetle has the original
2.0 litre motor accessible through
a very small opening. The 2.0 li-
tre motor has been very good
with over 300,000 kms on the
clock.
A 1.8 litre turbo motor as well as
a diesel were options at one time,
but the later vehicles all had
1600s.
It appears the some has hap-
pened again with the latest Beetle
only having the 1.4 TSI available
while the rest of the world have a
whole range of motors to chose
from. This includes a GTI and I
think the US is coming up with a
genuine Bug R.
It will be interesting to see if the
powers-to-be will ever take the
Australian market seriously for
the Beetle.
A quick look at the central binna-
cle shows it still has a cluster of
three main dials, just 13 years
difference in design.
I still like my blue back-lighting
rather the boring white dials of
the latest Beetle.
October - November 2013 Via West Page 27
1953 - 2013...Volkswagen commemorates 60 years in Australia
The interior is markedly different
but in some ways the same. The
same in the great seating and
easy access in to the 2 rear seats.
Different as can be seen by the
photos.
Gone is the large rounded dash
and binnacle style console, re-
placed by a colour-coded dash
squared off and not as deep as
the 2000 Beetle, and the latest
model has 2 glove boxes, but
where did the flower vase go?
The dash in the latest model is
the most retro part of the newest
Beetle. Where the 2000 beetle
brought the colour inside on the
door sills, the latest brings the
colour into the dash fascia -
something the 1950-1960s Bee-
tles did.
While the headrests in the latest
Beetle are up to date, I still like
and prefer those in the 2000
model...the see-through type.
There are a lot of things not dis-
cussed here and many things
leave me wondering if I would
buy one...time will tell.
Is it still true to ‘Beetle’ DNA or is
it really a 21st Century VW over
60 years since the original de-
sign?

Volkswagen Amarok
Crosses the
Simpson on One Tank of
Fuel The multi-award-winning
Volkswagen Amarok has complet-
ed one of Australia’s toughest
driving challenges, a point-to-
point drive across the Simpson
Desert on one tank of fuel.
To show the strength, durability
and most importantly, efficiency
of the Volkswagen Amarok, a
group of Australian motoring
journalists crossed the Simpson
Desert on one tank of fuel; trav-
elling from Mount Dare in South
Australia to Birdsville in Queens-
land.
With over 505km between the
fuel stops, over 1,100 dunes and
temperatures soaring over 40
degrees, the crossing of the
Simpson Desert via the French
Line, from Mount Dare to Birds-
ville, is one of Australia’s most
iconic and challenging drives.
Supported by a local expert and
Volkswagen staff driving support
Amaroks, the journalists drove
standard TDI420 diesel dual-cab
Amarok Trendlines featuring per-
manent 4MOTION and an eight-
speed automatic transmission.
All vehicles were equipped with
jerry cans carrying spare diesel
and water as a precaution.
Arriving at the famous Birdsville
Hotel and marking the end of the
Simpson Desert challenge, the
Amaroks covered the distance
with fuel to spare.
The Amarok with the best result
used 67.3 litres and covered
513km in total.
Director of Volkswagen Commer-
cial Vehicles, Philip Clark, com-
mented on the expedition.
“The Simpson Desert can make
or break a vehicle, and the Ama-
rok has shown it is well-equipped
to handle these conditions,” Mr
Clark said.
“While every measure was taken
to ensure the safety of our driv-
ers on the challenge should the
unforeseen occur, it’s fantastic
the Amaroks can not only com-
plete the drive comfortably, but
were so efficient they could have
kept going beyond Birdsville.”

Wins for Touareg and
New Golf
GTI at Aus-tralia’s Best
Car Awards It’s been another successful year
for Volkswagen at the Australia’s
Best Car Awards. Earlier today
the recently launched Golf GTI
took out the ‘Best Sports Car un-
der $50,000’ category while the
Touareg was once again named
‘Best Luxury SUV’.
Volkswagen Group Australia’s
Managing Director, John White,
was delighted to receive these
two accolades: “With the Golf GTI
topping the sports car category
and the Touareg winning the lux-
ury SUV segment, it really does
go to show the wide range of ex-
ceptional vehicles Volkswagen
has on offer today”.
“The Golf GTI continues to lead in
the segment it created, proving
the model is the right blend of
thrills, driveability and practicali-
ty” comments Mr White.
The judges agree, praising the
GTI for its fuel efficiency, perfor-
mance, build quality and style.
According to the judges “on the
open road, the engine delivers its
best in effortless fashion, power-
ing the hatch along at highway
speeds without ever raising a
sweat. Around town at city
speeds, the Golf is equally at
home”.
Volkswagen’s largest SUV, the
Touareg, emerges as Best Luxury
SUV against some expensive
competition.
“The Touareg is the right blend of
quality, value and class-leading
style. It’s an exceptionally capa-
ble vehicle which will carry you in
comfort and style on and off the
road” said Mr White.
The judges once again lauded the
Touareg V6 TDI for its third
win. “While there’s no shortage
of Luxury SUVs taking the fight
to the Touareg
in this class,
few deliver as
solidly across
all Australia’s
Best Cars scor-
ing lines as the
big
Volkswagen.
Touareg V6
TDI is a bona
fide all-rounder
both on road
and off, it can
tow a heavy
load, and do it all in comfort” said
the judging panel.
‘Australia’s Best Car Awards’,
now in its thirteenth year, places
the country’s most popular vehi-
cles through rigorous testing and
analysis to determine the best
vehicles on offer for consumers.
It is the nation’s most compre-
hensive and independent custom-
er-focused vehicle testing and

VW Golf Awarded
the "Golden
Steering Wheel"
2013 Volkswagen’s Golf has once again
secured one of the year’s major
car industry accolades, the
"Golden Steering Wheel 2013".
The award was presented recent-
ly in Berlin to Dr. Heinz-Jakob
Neußer, Member of the Board of
Management Volkswagen Brand
for the Development Division.
Volkswagen also received the
Golden Steering Wheel for Adver-
tising, with the judges praising
the launch campaign surrounding
the new Golf 7. The marketing
award was accepted by Christian
Klinger, Board Member for Sales
and Marketing of Volkswagen
Group and the Volkswagen
Brand.
The internationally acclaimed
"Golden Steering Wheel" was
awarded by AUTO BILD and BILD
AM SONNTAG for the 38th time
as the prize for outstanding new
releases in the car industry.
Along with over 200,000 readers,
a jury comprising motoring jour-
nalists, technicians, racing driv-
ers, designers and celebrities
took part in the voting. The Golf
prevailed over its competitors in
the category Small/Compact
Cars.
"This new accolade represents
both recognition and motivation
for us. The Golf is and remains
an undisputed bestseller, of
which more than 30 million have
been produced to date. We are
certain that the Golf, with its
many drive and safety systems,
is well equipped for the future in
the coming years", said Dr.
Neußer at the presentation cere-
mony.
The award ceremony also includ-
ed the presentation of the
"Golden Steering Wheel for Ad-
vertising" to Volkswagen for its
campaign "Der Golf. Das Auto."
The choice of the best campaign
was made by means of a multi-
stage process involving public
internet voting, as well as evalu-
ation by a jury of eleven individu-
als including representatives from
the advertising sector, media
agencies and market research
institutions.
"The aim of advertising is to
touch people – through authen-
tic, human, appealing and clear
messages. I am delighted that
we succeeded so well in doing
that with this campaign and were
able to win over not only the ju-
rors and the majority of
the readers, but above
all the purchasers of the
new Golf," said Klingler
upon receiving the
Golden Steering Wheel
for Advertising.
Besides the Golden
Steering Wheel, the
seventh generation of
the Golf has already
won numerous acco-
lades, such as "World car of the
Year 2013", "Auto Trophy", "Best
Cars 2013" and a Wheels Maga-
zine “Gold Star Value Award” for
the Golf 90TSI.
Volkswagen are World
Champions Following
One-two Victory in
Spain Volkswagen has won the manu-
facturers’ title in the FIA World
Rally Championship (WRC) with
an outstanding one-two victory at
the Rally Spain. That means all
the WRC titles* for 2013 will go
to the car maker from Wolfsburg.
Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia
(F/F) claimed the Drivers’ and Co
-Drivers’ crown three weeks ago
at the Rally France. The French
duo went on to score an impres-
sive win – their eighth this sea-
son – ahead of their team-mates
Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila
(FIN/FIN) at the “Rally de Espa-
ña”. As a result, Volkswagen has
an unassailable lead in the Manu-
facturers’ Championship with one
round still to go this season. Win-
ning three titles in its debut year
with the Polo R WRC is
Volkswagen’s greatest motor-
sport achievement to date.
