A new documentary, Shining Night: A Portrait of Composer Morten
Lauridsen, looks at the life and work of Lauridsen, America’s most
frequently performed choral composer, 2007 National Medal of Arts
recipient, and distinguished professor of composition at USC. In a panel
discussion, Lauridsen will be joined by the film’s director, Michael Stillwater,
and Dana Gioia, the Judge Widney Professor of Poetry and Public Culture
at USC and Thornton faculty. Sponsored by Visions and Voices: The USC

The Tempest: An Opera by Lee HoibyWednesday, November 14, 8:00 p.m., Friday, November 16, 8:00 p.m.Sunday, November 18, 2:00 p.m.
Bing Theatre
The USC Thornton Opera program and the USC Thornton Symphony present
the West Coast premiere of Lee Hoiby’s The Tempest. The sorcerer Prospero, his
daughter Miranda, the monster Caliban, and the mischievous spirit Ariel play
out one of Shakespeare’s most moving and complex dramas. This internationally
acclaimed opera, peopled by fantastical and complex characters, tells a story of
magic, revenge, and forgiveness. On Friday, November 16, at 7:00 p.m., Visions
and Voices: The USC Arts & Humanities Initiative sponsors a pre-show discussion
with Maestro Brent McMunn and guests.
Admission: Free for USC students, staff, and faculty with valid ID. $12 seniors,

USC Thornton Apollo and Oriana ChoirsFriday, November 2, 8:00 p.m.– Alfred Newman Recital Hall
The USC Thornton Apollo Men’s Chorus and Oriana Women’s Choir present
“From Freude und Lust to molly and may,” with music from the Baroque
era to the present. The first half of the program features music of rejoicing,
ranging from the operatic pageantry of Handel to the gentle joy of USC
Thornton faculty Nick Strimple’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. The second
half consists of works from the last hundred years, and includes text settings
drawn from such diverse sources as medieval Persian poetry and
e. e. cummings.

The USC Thornton University Chorus, led by Zanaida Robles and Kate
Belshé, lead a program of Vaughn Williams, Britten, Neufeld, Graun,
Buxtehude, Purcell, Saint-Saëns, and more.
USC Thornton Choral Winter GalaWednesday, December 5, 7:30 p.m.– Bovard Auditorium
USC Thornton’s Choral Music program presents its annual Winter Gala
featuring two hundred singers joined by the USC Thornton Scholarship
Brass Quintet, harp, and percussion in an evening of folk music and
traditional holiday favorites, from Africa to Appalachia.

Ndugu Chancler: 60 Years of Life and MusicSunday, September 23, 3:00 p.m. Bovard Auditorium
Ndugu Chancler is perhaps best known as the drummer on
the Michael Jackson hit “Billie Jean” but his life goes well
beyond that. He has been at the intersection of jazz and
popular music for his entire career. A faculty member of
both the jazz studies and popular music programs at
Thornton, Chancler has played with everyone from Frank
Sinatra to Santana and Weather Report.
In this afternoon event, Chancler will share his life and
music with video history, performances by Thornton School
students, and presentations by a select group of musicians
who have worked with the famed drummer over the years.
The USC Thornton Jazz Orchestra and ALAJE (USC Thornton’s
Afro Latin American Jazz Ensemble) will perform
compositions by Chancler joined by a litany of major Los
Angeles based artists in cameo roles.
