THE rough Top End seashave eroded beach sands touncover surprise World WarII relics at West Point on theCox Peninsula.
Fisherman Josh Chaplin,22, headed down to cast aline on Tuesday but insteadof a fish he caught an anti-aircraft gun turret and therusted skeletons of two un-known vehicles.
His mum, Sue Chaplin,who owns the Wagait BeachSupermarket, said localsknew of another gun turretand building nearby but hadnever seen this one.
‘‘There’s been a bit hap-pening in the last few weekswith the big tides,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s pretty exciting. It’sbeen here since the war.’’
Ms Chaplin posted the pic-ture on the Wagait BeachSupermarket FaceBook pagewhere she said a visitingWorld War II veteran hadpointed out where the turretwould be hidden in the sanddunes back in 2012.
He had returned to Dar-win for the 70th anniversaryof the bombing of Darwinand returned to WagaitBeach searching for relics.
Only one turret was vis-ible but he pointed outwhere the other would be.
‘‘Amazingly the turret hasreappeared this week,’’ MsChaplin said.
‘‘Truly an amazing bit ofhistory on show . . . until thesand and tide reclaim themall again.’’
Heritage consultant MikeOwen said after the firstbombing of Darwin acutting-edge radar systemwas set up all around Dar-win Harbour and the gunturret might be an anti-aircraft battery linked to it.
‘‘The most advanced unitin the world was put on thecliffs here,’’ he said.
‘‘There was an extensiveanti-aircraft system linkedto the radar and it could wellbe part of that.
‘‘The system around Dar-win was cutting edge andthey knocked out a lot ofJapanese aircraft.
‘‘There was somethinglike 170 raids (after the in-itial bombing) in DarwinHarbour alone.’’
At Nightcliff beach, an-other old relic has shown up,which has generated a greatdeal of interest from Darwin-ians and abroad.
The object, which re-sembled a pulley, was photo-graphed by Soph de la Rueon Tuesday.
The general consensusamong those who com-mented was that it was somesort of cart used duringWWII or perhaps an old min-ing wagon.
