iiprogram measures derived from the 1989 Bang'ladesh Ferti'l itysurvey (conducted by Nat iona'l Inst itute f or populat ion
Research and Training-NIPORT, Dhaka, Bangladesh) on Unmet
Cont racept i ve Need.
Ihe f ind'ings reveal that in Bangladesh, 29 percent
of currently married women of reproductive ages were using
a contraceptive method(both modern and traditional) and 71
percent were not practicing any method.
It appears from the secondary data ana'lysis thatthere is a "sizab'le" unmet need (35.2 percent ) in the
country---23.2 percent are in need of contraception forlimiting and 12.O percent are in need for spacing. Unmet
need is negatively associated with education, place ofresi dence, empl oyment status, el ect ri f i cat i on, and
fie'ldworker visits, thus implying that development effortsand fami'ly planning program efforts are both needed tot rans'l at e some of t he unmet need i nt o act ual use .
