First of all, why are we here?
We all wish to make as many of you as
possible choose the best way ahead for them.
“Best” understood to be what will allow you to
achieve both success and satisfaction.
(i.e. you to be happy!)
Slide 2 of 76

So, I intend to present to you
Part 1: A way of considering your career
in ICT
Part 2: What is on offer at the moment
and possibilities at our Faculty
Part 3: More Degree Programme Detail
Part 4: Faculty Life
Part 5: Sample Career Options

ICT…It’s the Most Flexible Career you can Follow
Why, you ask? Well, because it…
Touches every aspect of modern-day human
activity;
Includes an ever-growing number of areas of
study;
Offers easy career choices and switch-overs;
Allows one to stay at the forefront of new ideas;
Allows you to pursue your interests, whatever
they are!
…but with all this, comes the responsibility of choice, or
should I say, “spoilt for choice”
Slide 5 of 76
Faculty of ICT
Universityof Malta
When choosing
Ask yourself or consider how you:
Perceive the world;
Define and value your interests;
Best understand underlying concepts.
Always bear in mind that:
As you age will change so will your outlook;
Do not feel obliged to follow advice and opinion;
What might seem an exiting way to learn for
one, might not be for another.
Slide 6 of 76
Faculty of ICT
Universityof Malta
So, you MUST choose well, basing yourself on…
Your true interests;
Your capabilities;
Your understanding;
Your plans (short- and longer-term);
Market and industry realities;
Prevailing and emerging Socio-Economic
tendencies.
As mentioned earlier, ICT has several always-evolving
aspects. For example, using a car as a metaphor…
Slide 7 of 76
Faculty of ICT

Car Metaphor
The driver
(ICT manager)
The mechanic
(ICT scientist)
The passenger
(Digital society)
The designer

The buyer
(ICT user)
The “services”
(ICT areas)
Licencing &

(ICT education)
Slide 8 of 76
Faculty of ICT
Universityof Malta
Literally…ICT makes the saying “The world at one’s fingertips” come true!
Slide 10 of 76
Faculty of ICT
Universityof Malta
One might consider reasoning as follows
Using the previous “car” metaphor and taking “x” to mean anyof the highlighted ICT roles:
If you are interested in becoming “x”, then…
Ask yourself:
What is being “x” understood to be?
Why is “x” seen as “attractive”?
How and through which sources did you get to be informed about “x”?
What do you understand a good “x” to be?
Make sure you understand:
Exactly what being “x” actually means and the tasks it entails;
What knowledge and which skills would be required to be a good “x”;
Where and how best to obtain such knowledge and skills;
What attitude should one have to succeed as “x”;
What career options and benefits can one expect from being “x”.
Slide 11 of 76
Faculty of ICT
Universityof Malta
Why choose ICT? Well if one…
Likes technology and related matters;
Loves and rises to a challenge;
Has an inquisitive nature;
Wants to be able to choose from a variety of jobs;
Wants to be in demand and sought after;
Wants a very decent pay and career path;
Loves to learn new stuff;
Wants one’s solutions to change things in the world;
Likes to see one’s ideas help others.
Slide 12 of 76
Faculty of ICT
Universityof Malta
Simply put, do you like to…
Create and build things?
Investigate things?
Improve and get more out of things?
Communicate with and connect things?
Be in control of things?
Understand and explain things?
Use things?
Solve things?
Then, one should definitely consider a career in ICT.But why, …should you still be asking?

Computing & Business (CB) 1/2
The course is about computing. However, business-
friendly IT activities determine the approach and skills a
graduate learns from this programme. Therefore a graduate will learn best practices, and the provision
of software artefacts that are applicable to specific situations.
The course has two main components and there is a good
coupling between the parts. The computing part provides you with all the necessary basic
computing skills to reason about an build software solutions
satisfying business needs.
The business component, handled by another faculty, deals with
business management and finance, and provides you with a
solid appreciation of modern commercial trends and needs.
Graduates can choose in which area to specialise at the start of
their final year

Faculty Events (1/2)
Annual Lounge-around
This is an informal event, complete with refreshments and
background music, during which faculty staff meet with any
interested individuals for an informal chat on any aspect of the
Faculty and its offerings. This is a unique opportunity to meet
academic and administrative faculty staff in a friendly, relaxed
environment.
Annual Workshop in ICT (WICT)
This is a two-day workshop usually organised outside the
University bringing together local and foreign academics,
researchers, entrepreneurs, industry players, students and other
ICT stakeholders to share research ideas and work in progress.

employers. Prizes from industry are also awarded based on this
two-day event.
Dean’s List Awards
This is part of the ICT FYP Exhibition event. Students who make
the highly stringent Faculty-set high-achievement threshold are
recognised and entered into the Dean’s List which is later brought
to the attention of the Rector of the University. Prizes are also
awarded.

The Faculty of ICT has its own student-run organisation
which is called ICTSA. ICTSA is an important entity
through which ICT students can voice suggestions
and/or make us aware of situations and problems.
Several events are organized by ICTSA for ICT
students, such as the annual programming competition,
the end of exams bash, festive parties, social events,
etc.
