SORCERER’S APPRENTICEMICHAEL JACKSON TWILIGHT: ECLIPSEINCEPTION DESPICABLE MEFAMILY GUY: IT’S A TRAP
When I saw Inception at the movies, I didn’t fully follow the plot. I’m embarrassed to admit I was that really annoying person that nattered on throughout the flick. “What happened then? Who’s he again? Why is she there? I don’t get it...”
Without the benefit of a remote control to pause and rewind, I walked out feeling a
bit confused - but I know I liked the film, and I want to watch it again in the comfort of my own lounge room so I can fully appreciate its brilliance!
That’s why Inception topped my Christmas wish list, along with the spy thriller Salt starring Angelina Jolie, and The Twilight
Saga: Eclipse (go team Edward!!)In music releases, it doesn’t get much more
exciting than MICHAEL, the new posthumous album from the King of Pop.
Eighteen months after his death, MJ continues to be one of the biggest music acts on the planet - although this release, predictably, is not without controversy. Some family member’s are claiming that the vocal’s aren’t genuine, while Jackson’s estate says they’ve engaged sound experts who have deemed the voice recordings to be Jackson’s.
Either way, one things for sure: with this new album, the filmclip boxset Vision, and a new Jackson dance game, there’s plenty of MJ love doing the roundsthis silly season!

“There hasn’t been enough ‘blowing things up’
in Australian movies for quite some time!” jokes
the fi lm’s producer, Andrew Mason.
Lincoln Lewis, who plays one of the eight main
characters, Kevin, couldn’t agree more.
“There’s guns and explosions and dirt bikes in
the movie so, it was cool,” he says. “It was really
cool!”
The former Home and Away actor says he had
“always been a massive fan of the books” and was
thrilled to be cast in the epic movie adventure.
“I read the fi rst one when I was in year seven
and fi nished them off when I was in high school,”
Lewis tells EventCinemas.
“I just kept thinking, ‘I would love to [be in a
movie version]. I don’t even care if I’m the non-
speaking tree in the background, I would just love
to have a part in that!’”
Stuart Beattie was the man tasked with the
job of taking one of Australia’s best-loved young
adult novels and bringing it to the big screen,
which is no mean feat, given the popularity of John
Marsden’s creation.
“I always thought that one of the best things
about the book was that it was very character-
heavy – these eight characters are all very clearly
defi ned and they all have their own journey, and
I love that. I think that it’s just a matter of keeping
true to that and letting the action happen around
them,” Beattie explains.
“The more you care about the characters, the more
exciting the action is. I think the scenes are interesting
and I’ve tried to make them fun and give you a real
sense of who all of these people are before they go
on this ride.”
Tomorrow When the War Began, based on the fi rst
novel of the seven-part book series, is about a group
of friends who go on a camping trip to ‘Hell’, a remote
valley located near their hometown of Wirrawee.
When they return home from their short adventure,
however, they quickly realise that all is not as they left
it – and everyone they know and love is missing.
Primarily shot on location in and around Sydney
and the Blue Mountains, it was Raymond Terrace, just
north of Newcastle, that was transformed into the
fi ctional town of Wirrawee.
Producer Andrew Mason says he was astounded
that so many fans came out to
support the project during
production.
“I could look at

designer’s] progress each day, simply by logging
on to a couple of the fan sites,” Mason tells The
Newcastle Herald, describing how fans fl ocked to
Raymond Terrace to see the transformation.
“People were going down there to the set every
day and taking photographs and putting them up
on the web. That’s how passionate the fans are.”
Adds Beattie, “I take the fan response very
seriously. The fact that people actually know the
story and have thought about these characters
is great. It means you’re not working in a vacuum
so much; you are working in a world that people
already know and love.”
But diving into a project that already has an
existing fan base can be tricky, especially when it
comes to the believability of the characters.
“Stuart decided that he didn’t want us
to do read-throughs, he would rather us do
improvisations and just spend days together,”
Caitlin Stasey – who plays the lead, Ellie Linton –
explains.

“So I went ice-skating with Dennis, who plays
Homer, and I went on a day trip to Manly with
Rachael, who plays Corrie, so we just did little
things like that. We really, really bonded, just like
brothers and sisters. It literally felt like a giant
sleepover with all of the crew and cast and
everything. We were all staying in the same hotel
so we spent every waking moment together.”
Beattie is enormously proud of the fi nished
product, describing the fi lm shoot as “the most
rewarding experience of my entire professional
life”, and now there’s talk of a second and third
fi lm being shot back-to-back.
Ultimately, however, Tomorrow, When The War
Began serves as a shining example that Australia
can produce high-octane, big-action fl icks that
can stand up alongside big-budget Hollywood
blockbusters.
“My hope is that if you make a bigger fi lm
– something that seems to actually fi ll that big
screen in a big cinema – and the adventure is that
big, then people will start to think that Australian-
made stories are worthy of that,” Mason says.

DiCaprio stars as Dom Cobb, a skilled thief in
the dangerous art of extraction – that is, stealing
valuable secrets from deep within another person’s
subconscious.
Cobb enters his victim’s minds during the ‘dream
state’, when the mind is most vulnerable. His skill
in this area has made him a coveted player in a
treacherous new world of corporate espionage.
But, it comes at a price. Cobb’s rare ability has
also made him an international fugitive, to the point
where he can no longer touch down on his home
soil in the United States. His career has cost him
everything he has ever loved… until now, as he’s
being offered a chance at redemption.
One last job could give him his life back, but only
if he can accomplish the impossible: instead of
stealing a secret, Cobb and his team have to plant
an idea.
This is a much-simplifi ed
plot rundown for a
complex, suspenseful, highly stylised fi lm that
genuinely defi es explanation. But what else would
you expect from acclaimed fi lmmaker and director
Christopher Nolan, the man behind fi lms such as
Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins and The Dark
Knight?
“I’ve been interested in dreams really since I was
a kid,” Nolan tells the UK Telegraph.
“I have always been fascinated by the idea
that your mind, when you are asleep, can create
a world in a dream and you are perceiving it as
though it really exists. And what I’ve realised about
myself over the years is that if I don’t engage with
something on that emotional level, I’ll never sustain
my interest in it for the two years it takes to
make it.”
Inception boasts an all-star cast, with Michael
Caine, Ellen Page,
Marion Cotilliard,
Joseph Gordan-Levitt
and Cillian
Murphy
joining DiCaprio on screen.
This is the fourth time that Nolan has directed
prolifi c fi lm actor Michael Caine, as they previously
worked together on Batman Begins, The Prestige
and The Dark Knight.
“I’ve had intimate direction from great directors,
but I’ve never had the sort of intimacy and
minimalist direction I get from Chris,” explains
Caine. “He reminds me of Hitchcock, the way
that everything is about creating the best
moments of suspense.”
Made with very few post-
production digital effects, Nolan
dedicated a large chunk of
Inception’s US$160m budget
toward creating huge,
elaborate sets. He also
tasked his stunt
and special effects
teams with the
responsibility of
creating dream-like
explosions that

INCEPTION
On Blu-ray and DVD from December 8
DiCaprio had taken on a lead role in a sci-fi movie.
“I’ve never done a fi lm even in the science fi ction genre, so for me it was
kind of important to have characters that, even though they go into these
different stages of the dreamscape, they’re very grounded in an emotional
reality,” DiCaprio explains.
“My character has a very specifi c cathartic journey that he goes on in
this fi lm, to come to terms with his past… We spent three months just
talking about this fi lm, we had lots of discussions about the intricacies of
the plot and how we really combined so many story structures together.
And (Nolan) was very specifi c about saying, ‘I don’t
want to underestimate the audience – I want to
challenge them.’ I think he pulled it off with fl ying
colours.”
While DiCaprio admits that Inception is a
diffi cult fi lm to explain or categorise, he also
likes “that this fi lm is shrouded in a little bit of
mystery.”
“It’s a thinking person’s fi lm,” he says. “People
extract their own logic from it and have their
own interpretation of it, and those are the types
of fi lms that I’d like to be a part of
more often.”

Originally, Salt was intended to be a Tom
Cruise action fl ick, but the producers and
Cruise himself were all concerned that the
role was too similar to his Mission Impossible
character, Ethan Hunt.
One quick rewrite later – to change the
lead character’s name from Edwin A. Salt to
Evelyn Salt – and Cruise was out, and Jolie
was in.
“The most important thing we said was,
‘Well, we can’t turn this into a girl movie’,
because that’s where I think people have
failed in the past,” Jolie tells Moviefone.com.
“When they write something on purpose for
a woman, it’s always about being a woman,
using your femininity, all these kind of female
obvious things. So we said, let’s just keep
all the things about it that’s tough. It’s about
being what she is, it’s about the journey, and
if anything, we have to make it darker and we
have to make it meaner than the boys.”
In the fi lm Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, a CIA
agent who uncovers a plot to kill the visiting
Russian President. However, she is quickly
accused of being a Russian spy and is named
as the main suspect, and must fi ght to prove
her innocence.
In an interesting and purely coincidental
twist, this fi ctional premise recently played
out in real life in the United States, as several
Russian agent sleeper cells were found to be
living in the US.
“The side of me that makes a fi lm about
this situation thinks ‘My God, what timing.
This is bizarre.’ It’s just strange,” Jolie says. “It
feels like we’re walking in some kind of odd
reality.”
During the production, Australian director
Phillip Noyce abandoned CGI for good old-
fashioned explosions – which may have
endangered the life of his leading lady at times!
“Audiences have
become familiar with
CGI tools, where you
can virtually make
up characters, and draw up any
explosion or car or plane crash,”
Noyce tells TimeOut Sydney.
“We’re starting at a different point,
where the audiences are refusing to
suspend their disbelief because they can
see the mechanics of it all and work out
the artifi ce. We have an old-fashioned
approach to stunts unlike the CGI world,
where no one’s life or ribs are in danger.
“In Salt, the audience will realise that
Angelina really put her life at risk.”
It can’t have been too much of a
stretch for the 34-year-old actress, as
she’s planning on reprising her role;
in an interview with
Contactmusic.com,
Noyce confi rms that a
sequel is likely.
“Hopefully within
a couple of years
we’ll have another

Carell, who plays the evil Gru in the
animated adventure, reveals that there
was plenty of ad-libbing going on in the
production suites.
“The script was great. The script could
have just been done as is and the movie
would have been fantastic,” he explains.
“But I think because they had people
like Russell [Brand] and Jason [Segel], they
allowed for lots of improvisation, just to
loosen the actors up and let them have fun…
[so] we’d always do the script as written, and
then they’d ask us to play around and come
up with alternate lines and jokes.”
Despicable Me is Carell’s third foray into
the animated world, having previously voiced
characters in Over The Hedge and Horton
Hears A Who! This is, however, his fi rst time
playing an evil character.
In the fi lm, Gru’s position as the world’s
penultimate super-villain is waning, so he
plans to steal – wait for it – the moon.
He adopts three young girls from an
orphanage to help him reach his goal, in an
effort to reignite his popularity and continue
his reign as the most evil villain in the world.
“They wanted [Gru] to be a bit sinister
looking but also accessible – and that’s a
very tricky line to walk,” Carell says.
“He doesn’t have a black heart, but he
doesn’t have a heart of gold either. I’d say he
has a heart of bronze, and he discovers that
as the movie progresses.”
While Carell is an animated movie veteran
(of sorts), How I Met Your Mother’s Segel –
who voices the character of Vector, Carell’s
nemesis – was a novice to the world of
voice acting.
“What’s cool about doing this
animated fi lm – and this is the only

frame of reference – is that you

it is – and Carell says he’s only too aware that

Balthazar Blake (Nicholas Cage) is a
1,300-year-old master sorcerer who once
studied under Merlin. He lives in modern-day
Manhattan, which is under threat by his arch-
nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina).
Balthazar can’t take on Maxim alone, so he
recruits Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a seemingly
average guy who demonstrates hidden potential
as his reluctant protégé. Following a crash
course in the art and science of magic, the
young but unwilling apprentice fi nds himself
battling the forces of evil alongside his mentor.
Young Dave has his work cut out for him as
he attempts to survive not just his training
but also save the city and get the girl –
all en route to becoming The Sorcerer’s
Apprentice.
Parts of the story are loosely based
on the Sorcerer’s Apprentice segment
in Disney’s animated classic
Fantasia, which in turn is
based on the late 1890s
symphonic poem
by Paul Dukas
and the 1797

Here’s an interesting hypothetical question:
what would happen if superstar producer Jerry
Bruckheimer (Con Air, Pirates of the Caribbean)
was handed the reins to the Harry Potter
franchise?
Well, the end result might look a little bit like
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Disney’s modern-
day take on “good verses evil” using the age-
old tools of sorcery and magic.
“When you have villains, you’ve got drama
because you’ve got somebody pushing against
your heroes,” Bruckheimer explains. “It always
takes a great protagonist and antagonist
to make a good fi lm – and I

Goethe ballad. A fondly remembered scene
from the 1940s fi lm – Mickey Mouse stealing
his master’s hat to make the brooms dance – is
recreated here in loving tribute.
True to form, this fi lm ticks off many of the
Bruckheimer trademarks, tweaked only slightly
to account for Disney tastes: big action scenes,
sweeping visual effects, and snappy dialogue.
The visual effects are exceptional (no dodgy
blue screen work here – check out the scene
where a spell traps its user behind a mirror),
and while the story may appear to be a little
predictable for older viewers, the acting is above
par.
Cage – getting back into National Treasure
territory with the same director (Jon Turteltaub)
and producer (Bruckheimer) – has always been
one of Hollywood’s most watchable stars, and
here he excels as Blake.
Perhaps fi nding his feet again after his
barnstorming performance in Kick Ass, Cage
brings his trademark ticks and quirks and a
newfound grasp of subtle humour to the role.
Baruchel, who seems to have cornered the
market in playing the put-upon dweeb, is also
fun as Dave. Rounding out the cast is the always
reliable Molina as the bad guy and Monica
Bellucci as another of Merlin’s apprentices, who
is given little to no lines, but still enhances every
scene she’s in by her sheer beauty alone.
This being a Disney fi lm, the viewer can be
guaranteed of two certainties: that it will be
good family entertainment, and the good guys
will win in the end. All in all, it’s the perfect
family DVD for a relaxing Sunday afternoon.

Quite the contrary, Scott Pilgrim received the
big thumbs up from movie critics and fanboys
alike, including some big names like Quentin
Taratino, Jason Reitman and Kevin Smith.
“That movie is great,” Smith says simply.
“It’s spellbinding and nobody is going to
understand what the f**k just hit them. I would
be hard pressed to say, ‘he’s bringing a comic
book to life!’ but he is bringing a comic book
to life.”
Based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee
O’Malley, the plot line of Scott Pilgrim Vs The
World plays like something out of a video game.
Pilgrim, played by Juno’s Michael Cera, falls
for Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead),
but to date her, he must fi rst defeat seven of
her ex-love interests.
“I think the movie is about a fi rst adult
relationship,” director Edgar Wright (Shaun of
the Dead, Hot Fuzz) explains to MovieRetriever.
com.
“The way I connect to Scott Pilgrim is that I
can defi nitely empathise with how
everything at that age is
either the ‘best’ or
‘worst’. Every
time
you meet a girl, it’s the best thing ever and
she’s the only one. This is the LOVE of my life.
And then when you break up, it’s the END of
the world.”
Playing a character like Scott Pilgrim was a
challenge for Cera, who’s more accustomed to
playing angsty teenage characters, rather than
guys that can kick major butt.
“I can’t fi ght worth a damn,” the 22-year-old
Canadian actor tells CHUD.com. “That’s a fear
of mine, that people are going to want to fi ght
me after seeing this movie. They’ll see me in a
bar and beat the sh*t out of me.”
Cera says that nailing the fi ght scenes was
like trying to learn to dance.
“A lot of it is me,” he confi rms. “But that’s
not fi ghting. That’s dancing! ‘I have to put my
right foot forward, pivot, loosen my shoulder…’
It hasn’t stuck with me. I couldn’t do anything
impressive now.”
To remain true to the original novels – and to
obviously avoid fanboy scorn – the man behind
the original texts, Bryan Lee O’Malley, was
heavily involved in the project.
“He gave the actors a list of 10 fun facts for
their characters,” Wright told TheFilmStage.com.
“Number one fact was ‘Scott Pilgrim is
the hero of the movie inside his own head’.
I thought that was such a great quote… It’s
like Scott Pilgrim is sort of a fantasist. Maybe
too many video games, too many comics, too
many Saturday morning cartoons, too many
sugary products has resulted in this completely
fabricated version of his life. Which is a total
exaggeration.”
And, to be honest, who hasn’t been there?

This time, a group of New Yorkers dubbed
The House of Pirates must compete against
the globe’s best hip-hop dancers in the World
Jam contest.
Led by Luke (Rick Malambri), the crew live
together in a warehouse that is now under
threat of sale, hence their desperate bid for
the competition’s cash prize.
Previous Step Up favourites Moose (Adam
G Sevani) and Camille (Alyson Stoner) return
as New York University students, joining
forces with the crew – which also includes
Luke’s new love interest, Natalie, played by
Aussie actress Sharni Vinson.
“There is a small continuation,” Sharni
says. “Alyson Stoner, who played Channing
Tatum’s sister in the fi rst movie, [is] obviously
a big part of this third fi lm. And little Adam
G Sevani, who was in the second movie, has
come back to carry off this movie as well and
to lead us in there.”
Natalie is the leading lady however,
and her romance with Luke – plus the big
secret she’s keeping from him – is central
to the plot. And something
that gives this instalment the edge on its
predecessors is its use of 3D graphics, which
caused Sharni a bit of embarrassment!
“Before [Jon Chu, the director] told me for
sure that I booked the job, he played a little
joke on me,” she reveals.
“He said, ‘So I’m just going through your
resume and it seems that you have great
experience in everything, but none with
dancing in 3D. Do you think you can handle
that?’ And I’m like, ‘Well...’ – I’m fighting for
my life – I’m like, ‘Yeah, absolutely. I think
I can handle that.’ And it was just a joke,
obviously, because you can’t do anything
different! They exaggerate it in fine-tuning
the dimensions, but we can’t do it.”
Promising some of the most
spectacular dance scenes ever, Sharni
guarantees the movie’s uplifting mood
won’t disappoint.
“Growing up a dancer, I was very aware
of how these movies make you feel,”
she says.
“And I know Disney and
the objective of what
they’re wanting to
get across.
At the end of
the day, as long

but you feel like you’re just working on your own.
At least it was a real team effort.”
Adds Long, “She’s a great kisser, too. I just
want to reiterate that.”
There’s certainly a lot of smooching going on
in Going the Distance, a romantic comedy that
tells the story of what can happen when a one-
night stand develops into something more.
When Erin (Barrymore) and Garrett (Long)
meet at a bar, they’re both expecting nothing
more than a cheeky one-night hook up: after
all, she’s moving to San Francisco in a few
weeks time and he’s fresh out of a failed
relationship.
But as the saying goes, you can’t
help who you fall in love with… even if
that person lives on the other side of the
country.
Negotiating different time zones,
missing special occasions and clocking
up expensive frequent fl ier points are
just some of the challenges the newly
loved-up couple face.
“I think the fi scal realities of both the
characters play a large part, and it was
nice to see that played out,” Long says.
“That’s something that a lot of
people, especially now, can relate to.
There are so many things that you take for
granted when you enter into a long distance
relationship, chief among them being the
logistics of just getting from point A to B, and
what is involved with that.”
Far from being a dreary “recession
romance”, however, the fi lm maintains an
upbeat tone.
“I feel like I
personally want [to
watch a movie] that I can escape
into, where I can forget what’s
going on around me, but I
don’t want to lose sight
of being able to relate to
something,” Barrymore
explains.
“For me, I just want
that beautiful, striking
balance, and I feel like
this fi lm has that. I’m
laughing, but I’m crying,
and I’m relating, and there’s
something emotional about
it. I feel like it gets surprisingly
real, but then it does save
you and make
you laugh.”
The real life on-again/off-again couple had
one huge advantage going into this fi lm: no
awkward make-out sessions on screen.
“I was lucky, because Justin is a good kisser,”
Barrymore reveals, at a press conference
promoting the fi lm.
“I was like, ‘Phew! Thank God!’ It’s the worst
when you’re kissing someone who’s not a good
kisser, and you’re trying
to make it look
good –

LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS
On DVD and Blu-ray from February 2

follows brother owls Kludd (Ryan Kwanten) and
Soren (Jim Sturgess) who are kidnapped by the
evil Metalbeak (Joel Edgerton) and put to work
preparing an invasion of the Ga’Hoole, home to
an alliance of Owls that look after the species.
We journey with Soren as he escapes and seeks
to warn the Guardians, while dealing with his
traitorous brother, who remains with the evil
forces. It’s a dramatic story, and Snyder doesn’t
veer away from its dark tone in order to stick
with demographic conventions.
“The thing that makes it strong is that I’m
just like ‘No, that’s real. That’s the way I want to
approach it.’ So, the battles are intense and the
reality of the consequences is real. This makes
it immersive, so the kids, at the end, are like ‘Oh
my gosh, that happened!’”
Thankfully, Snyder’s cast does a wonderful
job of bringing the characters to life, with some
of the best voice work we’ve heard in an a fi lm.
And it’s almost an all-Aussie cast!
“I was blessed with an
embarrassment of
riches and
talent in
the cast
that I have. Though in the past I have worked with
American actors, in the case of this fi lm, because
I was interested in this fantasy world, I think the
accents and the abilities of these [Aussie] actors
have come together to create this perfect storm
of support for the fantasy world.”
Yet, it’s the stunning computer-animated
visuals that will be most fondly remembered
by viewers. The battle of the Owls is amazingly
brought to life and the detail brought into each
character by Australia’s own Animal Logic is
nothing short of phenomenon.
“With an animated fi lm, every second and
every moment has to be acted. Has to be
created. So the [animated] performances are
really stunning and my animation director
has done an amazing job making these owls
alive and real and funny. Plus with the 3D,
Animal Logic have done something pretty
groundbreaking - it isn’t gimmicky, but it does
deepen the world.”
The end result is fantastic viewing for parents
and children alike: one might even call it a hoot.
“I wanted to make an adventure fi lm like
Star Wars or Narnia or Lord of the Rings or
something like that, that I personally as a child
would enjoy,” claims Legend of the Guardians:
The Owls of Ga’Hoole director Zack Snyder.
Snyder is best known for the distinctly mature,
but visually spectacular 300, as well as the
brilliant comic adaptation Watchmen. The latter
in particular gave him a good understanding
of how to create an exhilarating translation
from words to screen. “I wanted to take what
Kathryn [Lasky] wrote in the books and treat it
seriously because I knew this was going to be
a kid’s fantasy fi lm and the last thing I wanted
to do is – I don’t want to say belittle, but – smirk
at the fantasy that they believe is 100% real.
Far be it from me to make, I don’t want to say
a joke but, like ‘Oh! Owls are wearing helmets!
Hilarious!’”
Legend of the Guardians certainly cannot
be criticised for taking the material lightly.

In Eclipse, the third installment of the fi lm
franchise based on Stephanie Meyer’s uber-
successful book series, high school student Bella
(Kristen Stewart) and her one true love, vampire
Edward (Robert Pattinson), have fi nally been
reunited.
But sadly, their forbidden relationship is
threatened to be torn apart for a variety of
morbid reasons.
The fact that Bella’s a mere mortal and
Edward is a vampire presents the fi rst challenge:
when Edward’s siblings would prefer to snack on
his beloved rather than get to know her, that can
put pressure on a relationship.
There’s also Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard), the
evil vampire who is seeking revenge on Bella for
causing the untimely demise of her love, James,
whom Edward and co. killed back in the fi rst fi lm,
Twilight.
And then there’s Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner),
Bella’s best friend. He’s in love with Bella, and
he also happens to be a werewolf… a vampire’s
arch nemesis.
Thus, Bella is forced to choose between
her true love for Edward and her friendship
with Jacob, as the struggle between vampires
and werewolves continue. And, there’s still
another choice for Bella to make: mortality or
immortality?
Eclipse, the third fi lm in the series, was
directed by David Slade, a British fi lmmaker
who made his name crafting music videos. The
fi rst fi lm, Twilight, was helmed by Catherine
Hardwicke and the second, New Moon, was
directed by Chris Weitz, so each fi lm in the series
has been steered by a different captain. Indeed,
the next outing, Breaking Dawn – which will be
split across two movies – will be directed with
fresh eyes once again, this time with Academy
Award-winner Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters)
behind the lens.
Working with a new director “makes it feel
like you’re doing a different movie every time,”
Pattinson says of the directorial changing of the
guards
“Having a new director around helps you
grow, so I feel like the characters are growing
and changing and you’re not just going through a
new set of events. It feels like every movie is very
different,” he says.
In Eclipse, Pattinson fi nally gets the share
the screen with actors other than his on- and
off-screen love interest,
Kristen Stewart –
including some pretty
intense scenes with
Lautner.
“It was great to do
some scenes with other
people!” Pattinson
enthuses. “I’ve always got on with Taylor really
well, and it’s a lot easier when you like someone
[to do] all of this macho stuff, because you can feel
really silly! And Taylor – I mean, he’s a much bigger-
built guy than I am, and if he was a complete idiot,
it could very easily become an uncomfortable
situation.”
Indeed. Lautner may be as buff as they come,
but the teenager– who sticks to a strict healthy
eating and exercise regime to remain in top shape
– is not afraid to share his softer side. “One of my
favourite movies is The Notebook,” he confi des. “I
think I’d consider that to be a little romantic!”

re-interpretation.
Updating Karate to Kung Fu and taking a
new spin on the famous fl y catching sequence
are just the beginning; however, while the fi lm
distances itself from the original in many ways,
it still possesses the spirit that made The Karate
Kid a cult classic.
Produced by Hollywood A-listers Will Smith
and his wife Jada – and starring their young son,
Jaden – The Karate Kid was fi lmed entirely on
location in China and features some stunning
photography and martial arts sequences. Will
says he relished the opportunity to remake
a classic from his childhood – a fi lm that has
undoubtedly stood the test of time – and was
humbled by being able to shoot the fi lm in
provincial China.
More importantly, though, the performances
are solid and the chemistry between Chan and
the younger Smith is genuine. The tense bond
between master and student is evident as the
pair undertakes their journey. Chan has certainly
cast aside his goofy ‘Mr. Magoo’ persona, if only
momentarily, and Smith
has cemented himself
as a real talent in the
making. It appears too
that the unity between
Chan and Smith
When young Dre (Jaden Smith) and his
mother (Taraji P. Henson) arrive in Beijing to
start a new life, Dre is immediately alienated
from his new school, the city and the foreign
culture that surrounds him.
Despite taking a liking to fellow classmate
and violinist Mei Ying (Wenwen Han), his
curiosity only earns him more attention from
school bully, Cheng (Zhenwai Wang), who plays
more than rough.
After a “regular” beating goes too far, Dre is
rescued by eccentric maintenance man Mr. Han
(Jackie Chan) – a Kung Fu master. Han stands
up to Dre’s teacher in a bid to protect him, but
when both their honour is put on the line, Han
decides that he has the chance to teach Dre
something more valuable than schoolwork. He
enrols Dre in an upcoming Kung Fu tournament
and together, the pair embark on a journey of
self-discovery that is surprising not only
to the student, but to his master as
well.
At fi rst you could be forgiven
for thinking that The Karate
Kid is simply a remake of the
1984 fi lm of the same name,
or just another Kung Fu action
fi lm. But Harald Zwart’s version is
a touching and highly entertaining
translated from their experience together on
set.
The young actor, who seems poised to
follow in mum and dad’s fi lm footsteps,
revealed that Chan managed to teach the cast
and crew a little something on set.
“He is amazing – every time he would come
in, he would say good morning in a different
language,” Jaden says. “He would teach the
crew members things, he would teach me
things. He was just very straight forward and
he would get things done.”
But does he teach his young protégé on
screen to become The Karate Kid? You’ll have

At Comic-Con 2010, series creator Seth MacFarlane revealed that they might tackle the Indiana Jones fi lm franchise next, as a dedicated Family Guy DVD series. Fans shouldn’t expect confi rmation any time soon, however: after pumping out a stack of bonus adventures in addition to the regular animated series, MacFarlane says, “We’re gonna take a little break.”
Peter Griffi n as Indiana Jones?
Lois as the lovely Princess Leia? Peter
portraying the rough and rugged Han Solo?!
Yes, it’s far-fetched, but it’s exactly this type
of ridiculousness that we’ve come to expect

The team behind the scenes have high

the fi rst two Star Wars parodies, Blue Harvest

“The fan base for Family Guy and Star Wars
enthusiastically embraced the fi rst two hilarious

COUGAR TOWN: THE COMPLETE FIRST
SEASON
Out now on DVD
TV’s favourite dysfunctional family is back with
the release of The Simpsons season 13. Kicking
off the series is the annual Halloween episode,
Tree House of Horror, which this year sees Homer
become “Death”, while a computer develops
a crush on Marge, and Springfi eld Elementary
is turned into a Harry Potter-style school for
budding wizards.
The town of Springfi eld faces several dilemmas
this season, including fi guring out what to do
after they are named the fattest town. Also, when
the Church of Springfi eld is feeling the fi nancial
pinch, they decide to rent out wall space in order
to generate funds, but it leaves the congregation
feeling there is no place to escape advertising.
As a family, the Simpsons struggle through
their usual dramas: Bart is up to his usual
mischief, but this time goes one step too far by
taking a joy ride in a police car. The judge decides
to punish both Bart and Homer, and has the pair
tethered to each other.
Meanwhile, when a Monopoly game goes
very wrong, the whole family is forced to work
with social services to reinforce how a functional
family behaves.
The Simpsons is well known for their array of
celebrity guests and this season is no exception,
featuring Pierce Brosnan, Matthew Perry, Julia

couldn’t stay away from the small screen for
long. Half a decade after the fi nal credits rolled
it’s in its thirteenth
season, it delivers
all the entertaining
and witty comedy as
always, proving why
it’s the longest-running
cartoon sitcom to date.
on Friends, Cox returns to sitcom TV in the
comedy series Cougar Town, in the lead role as
newly divorced “cougar”, Jules Cobbs.
Jules is in way over her head. After spending
18 years as a devoted wife and mother, she
fi nds her suddenly-single self diving back into
the dating pool – and she has no idea where to
start.
“This character is someone who I feel very
connected to,” Cox says.
“I’m kind of like her – I say pretty much
whatever comes into my head too, the only
difference is that when someone is writing it,
it’s a little heightened. I love that part of her
character – she can’t help but say what she’s
thinking. There’s nothing mean about her, or
malicious, she says things that just pop into her
head.”
Another part of the role that Cox can relate
to? Growing older: “You now, I used to not work
out, and I used to just be young. And then I
got older, and now I have to work out – a lot. I
work out probably fi ve days a week, and play
tennis on the weekends. I eat a lot, so I have to
exercise!”

From the makers of hit shows Secret Life of
Us and Love My Way comes the new drama
series Offspring, which delivers the quality
Australian drama that has been missing from
our screens of late.
The series follows Nina Proudman’s (Asher
Keddie’s) chaotic life, which includes her
complex family unit, complete with a younger
baby half-brother – the result of her father’s
ongoing midlife crisis, and his fl ing with one of
her friends – and an ex-husband who just can’t
accept it’s over.
Adding to all of this drama, Nina’s world
is thrown into even more chaos when new
pediatrician Chris Havel (Don Hany) begins
working at her hospital. Not only is he Nina’s
dream man, but he’s also unavailable.
Keddie is no stranger to television series’,
having starred in Love My Way. She explains
of her new character, ‘’I was interested in
exploring the personality of a woman who’s in
her middle 30s who still hasn’t really landed in
the world. In her job, she’s so responsible, so
capable. But beyond it, she’s off-centre. She
sets up barriers all over the place because
she’s so frightened. She swings from one
emotion to another and tries to make sense of
it, then ends up in turmoil because she can’t.”
The show’s not all drama, however; there
is lots of comedy throughout and it provides
something relatable for all of us, whether that
is a complicated family life or diffi culty in the
romance department. “The show is full of
hope,” Keddie explains. ‘’One of the things
that I was attracted to was its sense of
possibility”.
Offspring Season 1
After almost a decade, the Scrubs story
comes to an end! Catch up with J.D. (Zach Braff),
Elliot (Sarah Chalke), Turk (Donald Faison), Carla
(Judy Reyes), Dr Cox (John C. McGinley) and the
rest of your favourite characters in the fi nal
season of the hilarious hospital-based series.
Although the show was coming to a close,
there were many new faces in the ninth season.
Actors Kerry Bishé, Eliza Coupe, Dave Franco
and Michael Mosley became series regulars,
with Bishé taking over from Braff as the show’s
narrator.
Of the original cast, only Braff, Faison and
McGinley are listed as regulars in season
nine – and even then, Braff only appears in six
episodes. The show also shifts setting from
Scrubs: The Complete 9th and Final Season
Sacred Heart hospital to a medical school, where
J.D. has traded in his scrubs in order to teach.
“It’s sort of a spin-off, in a sense,” Braff
explains. “I’m there for the fi rst six episodes to
help launch it into its new incarnation, which
really focuses more on the med school.”
So, although our favourite doctors at Sacred
Heart may have fi nished their rounds, the laughs
don’t stop as they embark on new
adventures and mentor a brand new
class of med students.
As an added bonus, the DVD release
of the ninth and fi nal season includes
never-before-seen bloopers, deleted
scenes and interviews with the show’s
cast.

inducing situation. He follows with a David
Letterman style monologue, before opening the
fl oor to celebrity interviews that feature stars
such as Glenn Robbins, Guy Sebastian, Daniel
MacPherson and Rachael Finch.
Perhaps the most compelling part of the
show, however, is the “Show Us What You
Got!” segment that gives the celebrity guest
an opportunity to showcase a hidden talent –
think actor Daniel Macpherson busting out an
impromptu tune.
But while self-deprecating Stevens is quick
to laugh at himself, you’d be wrong to mistake
him for merely the latest on-screen clown. In
fact, Steven’s was a straight-A student, gained a
Bachelor of Commerce at the University of New
South Wales and went to work for top fi nancial
fi rm Ernst & Young, all while proving himself as a
young rising star in the rough-and-tumble world
of rugby league.
Making his fi rst-grade debut as a
tough-as-nails prop forward in 1993 as
a 20-year-old for St. George Illawarra, he
went on to become a marquee player at
the Cronulla Sharks and represented his
state and country multiple times.
However, it’s his work off the fi eld that
has brought the born-again Christian to
national attention. After feeling lost in a string of
meaningless relationships, Stevens took a vow of
celibacy in 1995 – the subject of his best-selling
book, Worth the Wait. This was not an easy
stance in the macho world of rugby league, and
Stevens endured taunting from many of his peers.
Yet it was a promise he took very seriously and
faithfully abstained for well over a decade, until
his wedding to Rebecca Ford in early 2010.
Stevens is indeed the complete package. Funny
and natural in front of the camera, he knows how
to handle criticism and has the integrity to be
himself and the sincerity to speak his mind. These
are qualities that will no doubt help him blossom
into a successful television host; and Stevens is
up for the challenge.
“[Hosting] is defi nitely something I want to
grow at,” he says. “But that only comes through
experience. I’m really excited and looking forward
to the challenge.”
He’s the man who made Nicole Kidman blush
with one fl ex of his sizeable biceps. He was the
object of Trent the Flight Steward’s Footy Show
affections. And he fed Wog Boy Vince Colosimo
“shit” dolmades.
These are just a few of the embarrassing
moments former rugby league star turned
television host Jason Stevens has taken in
the line of duty. From his escapades on The
Footy Show to more recently hosting celebrity
interviews on The Matty Johns Show and
putting his best foot forward as a contestant on
Dancing With The Stars, Stevens has become an
audience favourite.
He’s loved by many for his genuinely warm
persona, ability to laugh at himself and natural
talent to put celebrity guests at ease – all
qualities he brings to his new show, Big J’s Place.
“Big J’s Place is a variety show that is warm,
clever, fun and modern with some classic
Tonight Show elements,” says Stevens. “The
show is a return to family values and will appeal
to a wide audience, attracting a mix of younger
and older viewers.”
Currently airing on 7Two, the variety show
is a mish-mash of Stevens’ talents as a host.
Each show opens with a comedy skit that stars
Stevens and a celebrity guest in a comedy-

The striking cover art for MICHAEL was
designed by Kadir Nelson, an artist that Jackson
had personally approached to create a piece of

“Michael wears a golden suit of armour
and stares at the viewer as he is crowned by
cupids,” Nelson explains of the unique CD cover.
“He places his hand over his heart and looks
directly at the viewer, a symbol of Jackson’s big
heart and strong connection to his fans and
music.
“A monarch butterfl y sits on his shoulder,
[which is] another symbol of Jackson’s
metamorphosis as a singer and entertainer, as
well as a symbol of royalty. His musical history
unfolds behind him.”
Controversy surrounded Jackson when
he was alive, and unfortunately he can’t

Sony has assured fans that the tracks are the
real deal, and have even gone to the effort of
having the raw vocals authenticated, but that
hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from working

Fortunately for fans, MICHAEL is not likely to
be the last album of new material we’re treated
to from the late King of Pop.
According to Rolling Stone, the

And Jackson’s former manager, Frank DiLeo,
tells Rolling Stone that MJ reportedly left several
hard drives behind, each overfl owing with unheard
music, much of it recorded during the 1980s.
“There are a couple of songs we recorded for

“Eat while you’re drinking.” That’s the golden
rule Powderfi nger lead singer Bernard Fanning
says has kept the band together for more than
two decades. However, after seven studio
albums and 15 ARIA Awards, the Brisbane boys
are hanging up their microphones once and for
all.
Crowds fl ocked to see the band in one last
live performance as they toured the country for
a fi nal time in their 2010 Sunsets Tour. Starting
their epic rock’n’roll road trip in Newcastle
on 1 September, the band spent two-and-a-
half months playing at their favourite haunts
Australia-wide – including venues in Darwin
and regional Queensland, as well as the major
cities – for one last salute to the fans who have
kept them at the top of the Aussie rock game for
more than 15 years.
While hundreds of thousands of tearful
Powerfi nger fans have been forced to say
goodbye to the band that has delivered classic
hits such as “These Days”, “My Happiness”
and “Passenger”, the magic of their live
performances has been captured on the
incredible Sunsets Farewell Tour DVD and Blu-
Ray disc.
Presented by acclaimed fi lm director Gregor
rrrrr
Jordan (Two Hands, Ned Kelly), the disc captures
the band’s greatest hits performed with all
the energy, enthusiasm and passion that their
emotional farewell tour has provoked.
Also featured is an intimate behind-the-
scenes documentary that gives fans a rare
inside glimpse of the personalities behind the
music.
Contrary to rock’n’roll stereotypes, what you’ll
fi nd is a group of down-to-earth mates who
are more interested in jamming together than
trashing hotel rooms.
There are no temper tantrums or dramatic
punch-ups, just a group of supremely talented
musicians who feel they have accomplished
everything they set out to do.
But that’s not to say the band doesn’t have a
cheeky side. In fact, there are as many laughs as
tear as the boys refl ect on the fun – and no-so-
fun – times of life on the road.
“Obviously, we have a lot of fun playing
together, but I think the best times have been
when all four of us are in a car together just
talking shit; all paying out on someone,” says
Fanning. “That’s when being in a band is really
fun.”
The second most-awarded Australian band,
s ss
lllllllll
s
behind only Silverchair, Powderfi nger began in
1989 when guitarist Ian Haug and bassist John
Collins got together and named their outfi t after
the famous Neil Young song. Bernard Fanning – a
university mate of Haug’s – and drummer Jon
Coghill joined a short time later, and guitarist
Darren Middleton completed the picture when
he showed up in 1992.
Their fi rst studio album, 1994’s Parables for
Wooden Ears, fell fl at and their second record in
1996, Double Allergic, was a moderate success.
But it wasn’t until they released their third album,
Internationalist, in 1998 that featured hit singles
“The Day You Come” and “Passenger” that they
really hit the big-time, reaching number-one and
spending 100 weeks on the ARIA Albums Chart.
From that point it was a done deal and the
band continued to cement their status as one
of Australia’s leading rock bands with their next
four hit albums – Odyssey Number Five (2000),
Vulture Street (2003), Dream Days at the Hotel
Existence (2007) and Golden Rule (2009).
Sadly, the Sunsets Farewell Tour DVD will be
the fi nal entry in their playbook. “Sometimes we
do get sentimental and think about old times,”
says drummer Jon Coghill. “It doesn’t feel like 20
years.”

In her fi rst Australian tour since August 2009’s Hello Katy showcase, newly
married pop-princess Katy Perry – who walked down the aisle with British
comedian and actor Russell Brand in October – will hit up our capital cities
with her California Dreams tour.
Perry made the decision to bring her show to Australia following the huge
success of her #1 album Teenage Dream, which she describes as being a
collection of songs about love.
“It’s about how it’s all or nothing when you fall in love as a teenager –
[then] you get older and get more disappointed or guarded, and that
affects your relationships,” she says.
“But once in a while, someone comes into your world and just turns it
upside down and makes you feel like a giddy teenager.”
The sassy pop singer promises to light up the stage with a series of high-
energy, infectious shows set against spectacular candy and fairy-fl oss
themed sets.
She’ll deliver material from her new album, including hit singles “Teenage
Dream”, “California Gurls” and “Firework”, along with pop gems such as
“Ur So Gay”, “Hot N Cold”, “Thinking of You” and “Waking Up In Vegas”
from her previous chart-topping effort, One Of The Boys.

RihannaKaty PerryPerennial chart-topper Rihanna is bringing her Last Girl On Earth tour
down under early next year, with a series of stadium shows planned in
Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Newcastle in February
and March.
The singer, real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty, will celebrate her 23rd
birthday just days before touching down in Brisbane to perform in support
of her brand new album, Loud. This will be her fi rst tour of Australia since
2008.
Loud is the singer’s fi fth album in as many years, and features
collaborations with the likes of Eminem (“Love the Way You Lie [Part II]”),
current radio ‘it girl’ Nicki Minaj (“Raining Men”), and Drake (“What’s My
Name?”).
Promoter Michael Coppel says Rihanna’s almost two-hour show will
include a full theatrical production, band, acrobats, dancers and music
from all of her studio albums.
Rihanna – who has spent more weeks at #1 on the ARIA singles chart
than any other female artist in the last decade – describes the show as
“daring”, saying, “We’ve never done a tour to this capacity. The production
is unbelievable and the costumes? We just took it to a whole new level.
Visually and sonically it’s going to be a big step up from the last time. We
keep growing, and this time it is a massive production.”

How do you know you’re getting old? When
Mario turns 25, that’s how! The legendary
gaming hero that started it all has reached a
quarter century in 2010 and despite the massive
leaps in technology and the maturation of the
entire industry - especially its audience - Mario
has still got game. Each year he bounds back
onto gamer’s screens and rarely does he slip up,
offering the same brilliant platform adventure
gaming now as he did way back in 1985, on the
Nintendo Entertainment System.
Fast forward 25 years to the massively
successful Wii and Nintendo is celebrating
Mario’s birthday in style. There are two parts
to the celebration: fi rstly, you will fi nd a new
red Wii available in stores ahead of Christmas
and we’ve got to admit, the colour really looks
striking (see boxout)! Secondly, Nintendo are
releasing an updated version of their Super
Mario All-Stars pack, which fi rst appeared for
SNES way back in 1993, eventually selling over
10 million copies.
The game includes Mario’s fi rst four games,
all on the one disc. So you get the original Super
Mario Bros. from 1985, as well as Super Mario
Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3 (both of which
came out in 1988) and Super Mario Bros. The
Lost Levels (which actually came out in 1986 in
Japan as a continuation of the original, before
later making it to Western markets). In addition
to these classics, the game also comes with a
32-page booklet documenting the
history of Mario, and a
soundtrack CD,
which features 20 songs from the various Mario
games.
Unsurprisingly, the games have lost little of
what made them special over the years. While
visuals have certainly improved in that time,
there is no denying that the majority of side-
scrolling platformers that followed the Mario
games - from Sonic to Donkey Kong - were
all variations on the plucky plumber’s winning
formula. While it is a bit of a shame that the
opportunity hasn’t been taken to spruce up
the visuals or incorporate some basic motion
controls, nothing can rob this game of its
amazing nostalgia value.
Long time fans and newcomers who want to
learn more about the history of video gaming
and where it all began would do well to pick up
this pack.
Gaming’s greatest ever hero celebrates a major milestone.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARIO
As part of the celebration for Mario’s 25th birthday, Nintendo has re-released their Wii console with a striking new look. The console is completely red, as is the included Wii-mote and nunchuk. The console comes with the original Super Mario Bros. installed, plus the recently released - and awesome - New Super Mario Bros. game. Wii Sports, which is bundled with every console, remains as part of this new package. It retails for $299.95.

With more twists and turns than the ultimate rollercoaster, this is a fi lm you’ll want to watch several times. There are a few reasons for this – Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a top-shelf performance, Joseph Gordon-Levitt unveils himself as a future Oscar winner and Ellen Page rocks her most mature role to date. But the main reason you’ll be tuning in multiple times is to untangle the many plot twists as the protagonists infi ltrate their subjects’ dreams and explore multiple levels of their subconscious while building new dreamscapes. The surprise ending is open for interpretation and will cause many heated dinner-table arguments. (DECEMBER 8)

To complicate things further, the usually cold-hearted Gru encounters three adorable orphans who distract the mad professor from directing his army of loyal minions. This is an excellent family animation that will delight the kids while throwing an entertaining wink at parents.
THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE(JANUARY 12)Nicolas Cage plays Balthazar Blake, a centuries-old sorcerer who has been searching for an appropriately talented heir since the days of Merlin. He fi nds such a person in 10-year-old New Yorker Dave Stutler who comes to his attention when he visits the old sorcerer’s mysterious occult shop where a magical incident occurs. A decade later, the pair are reunited and Dave agrees to become the sorcerer’s apprentice in order to fi ght the evil he mistakenly released 10 years ago.
SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD(DECEMBER 15)None could play Scott Pilgrim quite as well as hip-to-be-square Michael Cera. Pilgrim is a 23-year-old indie bass player who is dating an intense, obsessive 17-year-old known as Knives. But when he falls head-over-heels with a skater chick he must dump Knives – easier said than done – to be with his dream girl. But it doesn’t end there. In order to live happily ever after, Pilgrim must battle with his new girl’s seven evil ex-boyfriends. This has become a cult hit for good reason.
LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS: THE OWLS OF GA’HOOLE(FEBRUARY 2)This Australian-produced animation presents a stunningly detailed fantasy world that sits comfortably in the league of Avatar. Owl society is in turmoil as loving owl families are beset upon by power-hungry bands of rouge owls. When two young brothers fall out of their family tree, they are recruited into this evil army, until one brother escapes to seek out the legendary Guardians who hold the power to defeat the army and return the forest to its natural order.
THE KARATE KID(DECEMBER 8)Jaden Smith, aka Will Smith Jnr., steps into the lead role of this 1980s classic, and while the new script deviates quite a lot from the original, the core formula remains the same. Jackie Chan is perfectly cast as mentor Mr Han, who helps Dre (Smith) get in touch with his inner martial artist when the boy undertakes a diffi cult move from the US to China. Perhaps a little old-fashioned in its approach to dealing with bullies, it presents the idea that a bully is much like a balloon – pop it hard enough and it will go away.
SHREK FOREVER AFTER(OUT NOW)Shrek and company are back for one last time, but all is not well in the land of Happily Ever After. Shrek (voiced, as always, by Mike Myers) has tired of his new domestic duties and is frustrated by his out-of-control brood. In a moment of weakness, Shrek meets with Rumpelstiltskin and is tricked into wishing himself into non-existence. As a result, Shrek fi nds himself in an alternate reality where Donkey, Puss in Boots and, most importantly, Fiona, have no idea who he is.
(DECEMBER 30)The fi lm adaptation of one of Australia’s most popular youth novels was watched with the eagle eyes of many dedicated fans, and director Stuart Beatie’s interpretation does not disappoint. Author John Marsden has resisted making a fi lm adaptation of his best-selling book for years, but it’s not hard to understand why he green-lighted this project. The script sticks close to the original novel – a group of teens head out into the mountains for an unsupervised camping trip only to discover that their town has fallen victim to foreign invaders on
their return – and the troupe of young Aussie actors do an excellent job endearing us to their characters. While movies often struggle to live up to the richness of their written versions, the core coming-of-age tale survives here.
SALT(DECEMBER 22)There’s something completely irresistible about Angelina Jolie as a sexy super spy, and as CIA agent Evelyn Salt, that’s exactly what she is. However, when Salt is accused of being a double agent for the Russian government, she quickly becomes target number-one for her former employer. With Jolie playing coy throughout, we’re kept guessing to the truth and director Phillip Noyce keeps our emotions on a knife edge as our allegiances shift from minute to minute.

SLIM DUSTY: THE VERY BEST OF SLIM DUSTY (GOLD LABEL EDITION)(JANUARY 14)He’s the man who gave us “The Pub With No Beer” among countless other country hits that spanned an incredible 60-year career before his death in 2003. He released his fi rst album in 1945, and around fi ve million album sales later, we are offered another taste of his greatness. Along with “The Pub With No Beer”, classic hits “Duncan”, “G’day, G’day”, “Cunnamulla Fella” and a stirring rendition of “Waltzing Matilda” are all featured.
THE POTBELLEEZ: DESTINATION NOW(JANUARY 28)The Potbelleez debut dance release in 2008 made the Sydney-based group an overnight success story as hit singles “Don’t Hold Back” and “Are You With Me” tore up the charts. Now they’re back with a second album that retains their high-energy club sound, but teams it with anthem-style tracks that will be huge on the summer festival circuit. The lead single is “Hello” – you’ll be hearing its incredibly catchy chorus at every party of the summer.
PEARL JAM: LIVE ON TEN LEGS(JANUARY 21)There’s nothing like celebrating the 20th anniversary of your favourite teenage years band to make you feel old, but that’s exactly what Pearl Jam fans are facing. Essentially a greatest hits albums, the 18 tracks span seven years of world-wide wanderings, culminating in 2010’s epic Hyde Park show in London. Monster hits such as “Alive” and “I Am Mine” join lesser-known tracks such as “World Wide Suicide” and “Spin the Black Circle”.
CIARA: BASIC INSTINCT(DECEMBER 14)The urban princess has gone big for her fourth studio release. Lead single “Ride” features Ludacris and a very sexy groove, while tracks such as “Speechless“ and “Gimmie Dat” show a marked return to her R&B roots. Originally due for an August release, the album was pushed back to drop just before Christmas, but it is well worth the wait as we fi nd Ciara in close to career-best form with a new energy that is quite irrespirable.
RY CUMING: RY CUMING(JANUARY 28)The self-titled debut release from Australian singer/songwriter and guitarist, Ry Cuming, signals big things in store for this rising young star. You can hear the Jeff Buckley infl uence that Cuming sites as his inspiration in his stripped back, lyrical sound. An avid surfer, Cuming was discovered by LA producers strumming in the corridor of a hotel in Costa Rica. Think Jeff Buckley meets Jack Johnson and you’re halfway there.
KERI HILSON: NO BOYS(OUT NOW)In her 2009 debut, In a Perfect World, Keri Hilson brought a touch of soul into the pop world, and with her highly anticipated follow-up album dropping this month, we’re in for another dose of the sex kitten with a brain. “Pretty Girl Rock” produced by Ne-Yo is a war-cry for women to put divisive jealousy behind them and embrace their collective beauty, while “Buyou” takes a shot at men who take women for granted. All in all, it’s a powerful album from a superstar of the fu)ture.
DAFT PUNK: TRON LEGACY SOUNDTRACK(DECEMBER 8)It’s not often that anticipation for a movie soundtrack outweighs that for the actual fi lm, but many music fans are more interested in Daft Punk’s backing tunes than Disney’s futuristic companion piece to the classic 1982 original. The French duo’s electro sound is the perfect fi t for the movie, and producers gave the band a 100-piece orchestra to work with – the result is an incredibly rich score that allows Daft Punk’s electro talents to shine like never before.
JOHN WILLIAMSON:JOHN WILLIAMSON LIVE(JANUARY 14After three ARIA Awards, 24 Golden Guitars, and more than four million albums sold, true blue country icon John Williamson reminds us why he is considered one of the industry’s best live performers. His performances at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the Rugby World Cup, and Sir Donald Bradman’s memorial are now part of history, and further evidence of his rare gift of switching from a cheeky wink to a soulful ballad to a fi st-pumping anthem as quickly as you can say ‘fair dinkum’.
(DECEMBER 10)It seems death will not weary the late, great Michael Jackson as his estate releases a posthumous album of new recordings completed prior to his passing. Simply titled MICHAEL, there has been much controversy over the album’s fi rst single, “Breaking News”, which was recorded in New Jersey in 2007. Many fans, and even some members of Jackson’s family, have cast aspersions on whether or not the track actually features Jackson’s voice, although collaborators
on the album have been quick to deny such claims. Either way, expect more unreleased music to escape the vault in the future – insiders say that Jackson often over-recorded for his albums and left much on the cutting room fl oor that will be enjoyed for years to come.
Pitbull’s stellar sixth studio album has a cameo line-up that reads like an MTV Music Video Awards guest list. Akon, Skakira and Enrique Iglesias all lend their vocals to the record, while David Guettra, Pharrell and Rodney Jerkins all lay down beats on the album. Pit has said that he wants every song on the album to be a hit single, and the lead single, “Hey Baby (Drop it to the Floor)” featuring T-Pain is a good start as it tears up dance clubs around the world. Meanwhile, Pit has big plans of touring South America with the Black Eyed Peas and linking with Iglesias for a segment of his world tour. (OUT NOW)

[BLU-RAY][BLU-RAY]
SE7EN(OUT NOW)The high-defi nition treatment is glaringly obvious in this moody thriller as blu-ray technology shines in the dark corners and shadowy frames that build the atmosphere of this edge-of-your-seat production. Brad Pitt plays a hot-shot rookie cop who is thrown into the investigation of a string of grizzly murders that are themed around the biblical seven deadly sins. Morgan Freeman is at his best as Pitt’s older, wiser partner who clashes with the balls-out attitude of the younger man.
NOTTING HILL(OUT NOW)This is more than a cookie-cutter romantic comedy. Sure, there is plenty of romance and a good share of laughs, but co-stars Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant also have a point to make about the cult of celebrity. Grant plays a humble travel book shop owner who encounters movie star Roberts by chance. That chance meeting develops into a romantic entanglement, but when Robert’s character is caught by the paparazzi she freaks out and retreats to her protected celebrity world.
SCENT OF A WOMAN(OUT NOW)We’ve seen plenty of Al Pacino as gangster and grumpy cop, but this 1992 classic drama demonstrates Pacino’s incredible range. He won his fi rst Best Actor Oscar for his role as blind retired Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade. Bitter and lonely, Slade employs high school student Charles Simms (a very young Chris O’Donnell) as a personal assistant for a Thanksgiving weekend in New York City. Each man learns from the other as they discover more about life and how to live it.
SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE(OUT NOW)Many fi lms have been inspired by the work of William Shakespeare, but few have peeked inside his life. By no means a factual documentary, this award-winning fi lm imaginatively suggests that the playwright found inspiration for his famous Romeo and Juliet in his own love life. William (Joseph Fiennes) is in love with Viola (Gwyneth Paltrow), however, he’s unaware that his lady love, in a desperate attempt to be part of the male-only theatre, disguises herself as a man and becomes male confi dant to love-struck William.
TWILIGHT ZONE: THE ORIGINAL SERIES SEASON 1(DECEMBER 8)It was a smash hit in 1959 and now you can discover the series that sparked the sci-fi revolution. All 36 episodes of the weird and wonderful fi rst season are included here – presented in high defi nition for the fi rst time ever. See the late, great Burgess Meredith as the last man standing after a nuclear blast, Anne Francis as a department store shopper who’s haunted by mannequins, and the season fi nale that leaves a writer to deal with his fi ctional characters coming to life.
After two decades of making beautiful music together, Powderfi nger are fi nally calling it a day. This documentary by the acclaimed fi lmmaker Gregor Jordon, the man behind Two Hands and Ned Kelly, goes on the road with the band on their fi nal national tour. Watch all the on-stage action in stunning high defi nition, then go behind the scenes for an intimate insight into the personalities behind one of Australia’s most successful rock bands. This is a joyful – and sometimes emotional – farewell to the band who has played the soundtrack to our lives. (OUT NOW)
POWDERFINGER SUNSETS TOUR
PSYCHO 50TH ANNIVERSARY(OUT NOW)Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece changed the fi lm industry forever. Now, 50 years later, it’s time to rediscover the penultimate horror fl ick. It may be a long way from the gore of the Saw franchise, but Hitchcock employs mood-building music, tension-fi lled cinematography and supreme characterisation to build scares that don’t need the in-your-face gore of modern special effects. Anthony Perkins plays unhinged motel owner Norman Bates who is clinging
to a mummy’s boy complex that spells doom for one of his guests. This edition is jammed with enough special features to impress even the most strident fi lm buff, including a feature-length making-of documentary, one of Hitchcock’s rare short fi lms and original storyboards of the infamous shower scene.
REQUIEM FOR A DREAM(OUT NOW)This is a profoundly touching fi lm about the danger of addiction – to illegal and legal substances. Desperate to lose weight for an upcoming television appearance but unable to stick to a healthy diet, widow Sarah Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn) gets hooked on diet pills. Meanwhile, her son Harry (Jared Leto) sets up a drug dealing operation with his best friend, Tyrone (Marlon Wayons). However their desire to test the merchandise develops into a full-blown drug addiction.
THE SIMPSONS: SEASON 13(OUT NOW)It’s a case of lucky 13 for Springfi eld’s fi rst family as they present another ripper of a season. Lisa is on track to attending her snooty dream school, that is if her genes don’t kick in fi rst. When Mr Burns discovers he only has a few weeks to live, the Simpsons take him in. Bart is arrested for stealing Chief Wiggum’s police car and is tethered to Homer as punishment. And Marge declares a health war when Springfi eld is declared ‘the fattest town on earth’.
THE HOLIDAY(OUT NOW)The Holiday proves that love does not stop at the airport. Amanda (Cameron Diaz) is an American hottie and Iris (Kate Winslet) is an English lass who are both feeling the effects of bad break-ups. They each respond to a house-swapping ad and trade lives, and homes, for a much-needed holiday escape. However, one lady’s trash is another’s treasure as Iris falls for a friend of Amanda’s in the form of Jack Black, and Amanda succumbs to the charms of Iris’ charming brother (Jude Law).

Despite looking super cute, a host of game modes ensure you can play the game just how you and your family desire ensuring gamers of all ages can enjoy it. Four players can join in the fun... or should that be, the fi ght?
JAMES BOND 007: BLOOD STONEPS3, 360, PC, DSWhile we await a new Bond fi lm, this game ably fi lls the gap. This all-original story has you playing the spy as you travel across six locations trying to prevent the usual evil-doers from releasing a devastating biological agent. Daniel Craig stars with Judi Dench and singer Joss Stone as the love interest. Third-person shooting, hand-to-hand combat and frantic driving ensure 00 Action.
EPIC MICKEY
WIIThis game is set to put Mickey Mouse back into the spotlight in a big way. You play a devious, more sinister Mickey, traversing the Disney landscapes with a magic paintbrush wiping out or creating the world as you see fi t. Epic Mickey mixes up the open-world platforming with combat, RPG elements and side-scrolling level transitions, plus it looks a treat. The Mouse is back!
DEF JAM RAPSTARPS3, 360, WIIThere are a number of cool karaoke games out there, but very few provide a fun experience for hip-hop fans. Def Jam Rapstar, however, focuses on just that with a range of modes designed to test out your rapping ability. The massive tracklist is star-studded, including the likes of Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre, Public Enemy, Kayne West, Salt ‘n’ Pepa, Wu Tang Clan, Outkast, Diddy, 50 Cent and 2 Pac.
DANCE CENTRALXBOX 360Made by the same brains who created Guitar Hero, Dance Central is without question the best of Kinect’s launch games. Using the device’s amazing technology, the game takes an accurate reading of your body and monitors how you move as you bust out the dance moves shown on screen, scoring your effort. It works amazingly well, and is buoyed by a great tracklist.
GOD OF WAR: GHOST OF SPARTAIf you ever wanted to know just how powerful a handheld can be, take a look at Ghost of Sparta - it has graphics and gameplay that match most full console experiences. Forming a narrative bridge between God of War 1 and 2, this game sees Kratos pursue his long lost brother Deimos. Great new weapons and slick combat make this the PSP’s best action title.
DONKEY KONG COUNTRY RETURNSWIIFourteen years after his last side-scrolling adventure, Donkey Kong Country does indeed return and is better than ever. Astonishing level design and gameplay that builds on, rather than replicates, the old action will have platform lovers addicted. Great graphics, a two-player mode and a stack of variety keep it lively and fun throughout. A must-own!
Michael Jackson may be six feet under, but we’re expecting to see more of him than ever over the coming years. This includes an intriguing new game for the Nintendo Wii, in which fans get to act out their ‘thrilling’ fantasies. It’s primarily a dancing game, with players confronted with a host of Jackson’s favourite songs delivered with the familiar backdrop of his music videos. As
Jacko busts out his moves on screen you need to follow suit, holding the Wii’s controllers so that the machine knows how you’re performing. You actually end up dancing like the legend himself. Up to four-players can join in the fun, and you can use a microphone to try your luck at singing, too. Versions of the game on the PS3 and 360 are expected early next year.
MICHAEL JACKSON: THE EXPERIENCEWII
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS - PART 1PS3, 360, WII, DS, PCThere has been a game for each of the Harry Potter fi lms and much like the quality of the movies, the visuals and sense of freedom have improved dramatically with each iteration. It will come as no surprise that at the business end of the series, combat takes centre stage, although there is some stealth based gameplay, too. Kinect owners can make gestures to cast spells, which is particularly cool.

BLACKBERRY TORCH 9800EVOLUTION, BABY!One of the few brands to stand toe-to-toe with the iPhone, the Blackberry remains a popular choice amongst business men and women. The brilliant new Torch 9800, however, should break it out into the wider community. The intriguing design has a slide-out screen which reveals a full QWERTY keyboard. Despite our initial concerns that this approach might destabilise the handset, it’s brilliantly
designed and works a treat. When slid-out, the screen feels secure and the phone remains well weighted in your hands. The touchscreen is super responsive too, and nice and bright: plus, it comes with the new Blackberry OS, which features bright and colourful menus in place of the drab text-based options of the previous models. Socialites will enjoy the fi ve mega-pixel camera and the speed in which it processes photos. In fact, this whole device is fast, fl exible and fun and an excellent evolution for the brand. Check it out!

SONY BRAVIA NX810NEW DIMENSIONSony has been very active in pushing 3D technology, especially via its PlayStation console, but also with Blu-ray. So it has been odd then that their signature Bravia TVs have been a little late coming to the party. The NX810 fi xes this, being 3D ready just in time for the fi rst run of Blu-ray fi lms that make use of the extra dimension. The 55” screen runs at a fantastic 200MHz and is LED backlit, offering some extremely impressive visual quality aided by too, supporting DirectX11,
1080p resolution and HDMI 1.4 output, which allows the notebook to link up to a big TV without losing quality, or the effect. It’s a pretty mean gaming machine, sporting 1.5GB GDDR5 video memory, a 500GB hard-drive, 8GB of RAM and a design that is ergonomically designed to facilitate long periods of use. Furthermore, it features a Blu-ray writer and player, which means you can use it to watch Blu-ray fi lms in 3D, too. The necessary glasses are included, so if you are looking for a top of
the line, 3D gaming/multimedia device that fi ts in your backpack, the G73 is diffi cult to look past at $2,999
RRP.
Bravia Engine 3 and MotionFlow Pro technology. A less known but equally impressive feature is IPTV support, for video and TV that comes from the internet. This looks a treat and the available content here is the best in the marketplace: you’ll really be ahead of the curve on this one as we expect IPTV to boom through this decade. We’re disappointed that some of the optional extras (like a stand)
aren’t included, but Sony are known for their great TVs, and this is no exception.

JUST MOBILE GUM PLUS PP-168VERY HANDYWe all love our smartphones: we all hate it when they burn through their battery power before we’re back in the comfort of our homes. It almost makes you feel lost and helpless. This handy little device looks to get around this problem. Designed for the iPhone, but capable of recharging any USB tied phone, it holds around two additional charges worth of power. It is a little bigger than we would have liked - about two-thirds the size of the phone itself - and you will have to remember
to have it charged up as well, but there is no denying its benefi ts when on long haul fl ights, or away from power sources (such as camping). A little LED meter shows you how much you’ve got in the tank, so you shouldn’t be caught out and at $89.95 RRP it is not a bank buster. You never need be lost and helpless again!
